It’s decision time for hundreds of pieces of legislation in California this week. Make some calls!

The Senate’s fiscal committee will decide the fate of bills on Thursday, June 1st; the Assembly will do so on Friday, June 2nd.  The ones that pass will then move to the opposite house.

With our strong Democratic majority, California has the ability to counter some of the negative policies coming out of Washington D.C. Our friends at Indivisible San Francisco short-listed some of the most important bills. If you have time this week, please pick the ones that speak the most to you, and make some phone calls.

State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Assemblywoman Monique Limon don’t receive many calls from their constituents, so if we all make our voices heard this week, we can make a real difference.

CALL TO STATE ACTION

TUESDAY 5/30 – FRIDAY 6/2
Pick your favorite bills from the list ISF has put together and let our state MoCs know how you feel.

Women dominated the resistance news cycle this week – Wonder Women Unite! But first, some crazy-good news…

Former FBI director Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. Indivisible Ventura hammered this issue from every angle we could think of  – 22 calls to action – and your calls made a difference!

Single payer health care is closer to becoming law in New York and California than ever before but if we want it, everyone is going to have to ask for it. Tell Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson that you care about SB562:  SAC (916) 651-4019, SB  (805) 965-0862, (805) 988-1940 See the full call to action here.

These guys are ROCKSTARS! The ACLU took legal action to force Trump to produce evidence of voter fraud claims. How many executive orders have lawsuits against them? We’ve kinda lost count.

Public support for gay marriage has reached a new high.

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day.  42 years before it became an official holiday filled with roses, chocolate and Kodak moments, it was something quite differentand we can be proud to say that women have risen again to resist.

The “Election Integrity” commission WILL suppress voting rights. Call our Attorney General!

Trump continues to claim that millions voted illegally in the 2016 election, despite a complete lack of evidence. He has just set up a commission to investigate election integrity, and has invited Kris Kobach (ACLU calls him “the King of Voter Suppression”) to be vice chair. Kobach’s helped write and pass voter ID laws in multiple states, many have been overturned in court due to their clear discriminatory intent. Given Trump’s complete disregard for Russian interference in our election, this is particularly ironic.

Script: In light of Trump’s newly formed “election integrity” commission, I’m calling to urge California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to commit publicly to preserving voting rights by challenging discriminatory policies, such as voter ID laws, that suppress voting in the name of electoral integrity.

Call CA State Attorney General, Xavier Becerra  800-952-5225

“Integrity” has nothing to do with it. Vote “NO” on H.R. 2090

The Election Integrity Act (H.R.2090) is nothing more than an attempt to suppress the vote. It would require photo identification in Federal elections as a condition of casting a ballot and is clearly discriminatory in practice and intent, fueled by Trump’s delusions that he was cheated of a majority vote. His myth of voter fraud will cheat people of their voting rights.

Script: I’m calling today to ask Rep. (____) to vote “NO” to H.R.2090, the so-called Election Integrity Act of 2017 and advocate instead for voting reforms that protect the security of our elections without discriminating against poor and minority voters.

Call Rep. Julia Brownley: DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

OR Rep. Salud Carbajal: DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710, SLO (805) 546-8348

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-saving Good News. Trump Failure Edition

Oh, let us count the ways Mr. Trump has failed this week. There’s just sooooo much of it!

Trump fails at his attempt to penalize sanctuary cities. We’ve collectively made a lot of phone calls about this one! Keep up the pressure by calling about the “California Sanctuary State” bill.

It took Trump THREE tries to get his horrible healthcare bill through the House. The good news? The Senate is going to hate it and send it back to the House after many amendments.

What can YOU do to stop this? We are participating in three die-ins this week in neighboring districts to show Congressmen who voted for TrumpCare that we will not tolerate this twice. Click here for more info (carpooling available). Click here to see why these die-ins work.

Yet ANOTHER fail: No funding for Trump’s stupid wall in the federal spending bill. Yup, we were all over this one too. GREAT job everyone.

Oh, and there’s MORE: No funding cuts for Planned Parenthood, the NIH, PBS, NPR, and the EPA—will continue to receive funding. Many actions were taken for these issues, you can continue to support EPA protection here.

Although GOPs planned to exempt themselves from TrumpCare, they turned tail Continue reading “Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-saving Good News. Trump Failure Edition”

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-saving Good News!

We made big leaps this week with the stupid border wall, climate change, immigration, voting, and women’s rights. Also, believe it or not, Trump’s greatest accomplishment is actually a good thing! Gotta love those unintended consequences!

Don’t Frack with our future! The Ventura Climate March became a GIANT art instillation – we hiked up our vertical Botanical Gardens in coordinated bright colors to become a human thermometer. With drones flying overhead and photographers hiking all over the opposite hillside, some stunning pics should come out of the celebration. Watch the Facebook page for them!

Buh-bye Border Wall! The government spending bill will not include funds for the wallLawmakers in border states are united against this stupid wall, why go on? Our action calls are working!

California won’t back down: Trump’s order to defund sanctuary cities was blocked by a U.S. District Court Judge in San Francisco. Continue to fight for California’s Sanctuary Bill by making your phone calls – action item here.

Voters won’t back down either! A new poll showed 63% of Democrats nationwide feel “very excited” about voting in 2018, and they’ll have plenty of choices in the primary: There’s a 58% increase in Democratic candidates.

In fact, Trump’s greatest achievement so far? He has sparked one of the greatest surges of American citizen action in half a century!

Congress was on recess these past weeks, but the resistance didn’t let up…

Bill O’Reilly is out at Fox News! In large part due to the immense pressure from the American people toward the advertisers on his show.

Seven executions in Arkansas were blocked by a federal judge – the State was trying to outrun expiration dates on the lethal drugs used in these executions.

The last abortion clinic in Kentucky remains open due to an ACLU lawsuit.

Maryland has become the first state in the country to agree to reimburse Planned Parenthood if Congress cuts its funding.

This happened yesterday, all over America! We marched to tell Donald that, contrary to his belief, we REALLY do want to see his taxes!

Mr. Trump seems to be a bit worried…

Yup. It looks like someone was paying attention.

Also, how do we get our greedy mitts on one of those fabulous Trump Chickens? We need one in the worst way.

Good News!

The Wall is looking increasingly less likely.

Some GOP leaders are starting to publicly support elements of the ACA.

Buh-bye Bannon!

Steve Bannon has been removed from the National Security Council fulfilling our collective dreams when we made phone calls to our congresswoman!

…and Nunes

Devin Nunes will step aside from leading the investigation into Trump’s ties with Russia. (He’s now officially under an ethics investigation himself.) Was there a call to action on our part? Why, yes, there was! Great job everyone!

Next up – Bill O’Reilly! More than 40 companies pulled their ads from The O’Reilly Factor, following sexual harassment accusations. Sleeping Giants, who have worked diligently to have advertisers remove their presence on Breitbart, is now working on getting advertisers to stop advertising on Fox News during Bill O’Reilly’s show.  Keep up the pressure! Here is their current list that is being updated

And in case you missed it:

A Kentucky judge ruled that a lawsuit accusing Trump of inciting violence can proceed, dismissing his free speech defense. According to the judge, Trump’s remarks against protesters at a campaign rally “at least ‘implicitly encouraged the use of violence or lawless action.’”

California Leading the Charge

On Monday evening, Senate Bill 54, the “sanctuary state” bill, or CA Values Act, was passed. The bill will now go to the State Assembly, and if approved, to Governor Brown. Take some time to “happy dance,”because our phone calls began a process that will make a HUGE difference in so many lives!

Demand an Independent Russian Election Interference Commission! Support S. 27

Ask Senator Kamala Harris to demand a 9/11-style, bipartisan independent commission to investigate Russian election interference. Senator Harris has still not cosponsored S. 27, which would establish an independent commission to investigate Russian election interference. Urge her to do so.
