Lego welcomes the women of NASA.
The kids are alright.
First, let’s talk about this 11 year-old girl who’s been worried about the Flint water situation since she’s been 9. Along with playing piano, swimming, fencing and taking dance lessons, she has invented the cheapest, most effective test for lead in water and won “America’s Top Young Scientist”. God, what was I doing when I was 11?
Then there’s Ames Mayfield, who in 14 years or so, will be running for office. Put in on your calendars now.

In case you haven’t been keeping track, the contraception and “pain capable” issues are just the tail end in a long line of federal assaults on the rights and interests of women.

Amongst the states, almost 400 anti-abortion bills, of various types, were introduced last year.
Battle #1 – Rolling back of ACA contraceptive coverage
Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] ask Rep. [___] to take any and all actions to ensure all women have affordable access to healthcare, including no-copay contraception.

Starting this hard week’s good news off with this song…
Good news in resistance!
On Columbus Day, people in New York City and Pittsburgh protested for the holiday to be renamed Indigenous People’s Day.
After Jemele Hill was suspended from ESPN, again, people showed up at their headquarters to protest. Hey ESPN, this is worth a read. #TakeAKnee & #StandWithJemele
If you missed the story about why Colin Kaepernick knelt during anthems, here it is… Pass it on to that person on your Facebook feed that’s losing his mind over this. Continue reading “Sanity-saving good news – “‘Respect’ is more than a song by Aretha” Edition.”
Good news in basic humanity.
Lin-Manuel’s advice works for everything, actually. This was a hard week where we wonder about our basic humanity. But then all this happens and, well, it helps a bit.
San Juan Mayor Carment Cruz does not back down.
“This terrible and abominable view of him throwing paper towels and throwing provisions at people, it does not embody the spirit of the American nation.” –San Juan Mayor Carmen Cruz on 45’s trip to Puerto Rico
Racial slurs were shouted at a Nevada Union High School student in Grass Valley as he walked down Mill Street, according to his father on an amazing Facebook heart-to-heart to the white people in his community. Concerned local residents, including the police and the Nevada Union High principal, asked the community to do better and stand up to racism. And this happened.

No on H.R. 36: Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act!
Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to urge Rep. [___] to vote NO on H.R. 36, which would make it a crime to perform or attempt to perform an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
More script if you want it: Only 1.3% of US abortions occur after the 20th week and usually because of severe fetal anomalies or maternal health risks. This bill risks the lives of women and interferes with their Constitutionally guaranteed reproductive rights.
Call Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779
OR Rep. Salud Carbajal: (CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348

“Peace doesn’t fall from the heavens because you are lucky; it is built from the ground up with sweat and love and tears.”
As Peace is Loud’s founder Abigail Disney wrote about violence prevention efforts in Kenya, “Please try to remember that if ‘nothing’ happens today, it will only be because of all that has happened before today.

Reports are that her office didn’t love all the calls she got on this last week.
So what should we do? CALL MORE, of course!
Minimal Script: Hi, I’m from [state], and concerned about Betsy DeVos’ efforts to weaken Title IX (Title 9) protections for survivors of sexual assault. I am calling to request keeping these protections in place. Thank you.
Call: US Department of Education, 800-872-5327.
