Tues 4/2: Today is EQUAL PAY DAY! “YES” on H.R. 7 – the Paycheck Fairness Act.

Thank our legislators, or thank them again if they’re already supporters! Have a chat with those who aren’t. (Scripts below) Depending on race and state, women can earn $1 million less than men over a 40-year career.

Action  – “YES” on H.R. 7/S.270 – The “Paycheck Fairness Act”

Yes, Virginia, there is still a wage gap. When you grow up, no matter how good you are, no matter how hard you work, you will still be paid less than a male. How dreary your retirement will be! What seems like a small difference between your paycheck and that of the guy playing computer games at the next desk over, really adds up to a huge loss for you over a lifetime of working! Skeptical minds have stopped progress for a long time, letting misogyny and injustice abound. Only political activism can push aside that curtain of discrimination between you and the financial stability of equal pay. Otherwise, a thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, pay discrimination will continue to blight the futures of girls like you.”

Wed. – 10/10: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

(Quote by Martin Luther King)

Take a moment this morning and watch this amazing video.

Action #1 – Share your feelings after the Kavanaugh confirmation debacle.

The New York Times wants women’s responses to the following questions:

  • Whose accounts did you end up believing, Christine Blasey Ford’s or Judge Kavanaugh’s? Why?
  • What is your reaction to the vote? How do you feel the fight over his confirmation will affect women?
  • Most of the senators who voted were men. Would it have made any difference if more women were senators and able to vote? How important is it to have more women in public office?
  • Does this decision spur you to any kind of political action, such as voting in the midterm elections or attending political protests? If so, what do you plan to do? Or does it feel like meaningful change is out of reach?
  • If you were to pass down one lesson to your son or daughter from Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination and hearings, what would it be?

Share your thoughts here. This NY Times page does not count against free view access.

Action #2 – Don’t let him get comfortable.

Wed. 5/23: The “Gag Rule” comes home. Now American women will die for someone else’s beliefs.

“The First Thing A Principle Does Is Kill Somebody”

– Dorothy Sayers.

We’ve been abusing women abroad with the “global gag rule” every time a Republican president is in office. Literally dying. Preventable deaths. By the thousands. Now it’s our turn. Continue reading “Wed. 5/23: The “Gag Rule” comes home. Now American women will die for someone else’s beliefs.”

Postcard Pizza Party for California Congressional District 25 on April 25th!

We will be joining a statewide effort to get out the vote in California Congressional District 25!

When: Wednesday, April 25th at 11:00AM – 2:00 PM
Where: Santino’s Pizza Parlor – 4321 Telegraph Rd, Ventura
Fun! Pizza will be provided! (A little cheese grease goes a long way toward making our postcards have that special “homey” touch!)

CD25 is Steve Knight’s district which includes part of Ventura County, Santa Clarita, Lancaster, and Palmdale.  We Venturans can’t vote Knight out, but we can help our neighbors rid themselves of him – and help ourselves by removing one of the 24 Trump minions needed to turn the House blue! We are not endorsing a candidate, just advocating power to the polls.

Our appeal will be directly to the voters in CA25 – NOT mass political mailings, because all of our cards will be handwritten. Each will be a message from one voter to another. We are simply asking Americans to do that most American thing — VOTE!

Here are some tidbits from about Steve Knight to inspire us:

Let us count the ways Steve Knight has betrayed us: He votes with Trump 98% of the time. He voted against our healthcare. The National Rifle Association gives him an A rating. He voted for the #TrumpTaxScam. He’s Continue reading “Postcard Pizza Party for California Congressional District 25 on April 25th!”

Postcard Party for California District 1 on April 4th!

We will be joining a statewide effort to get out the vote in California District 1!

When: Wednesday, April 4th at 11:00AM – 2:00 PM
Where: Santino’s Pizza Parlor – 4321 Telegraph Rd, Ventura
Fun! Pizza will be provided! (A little cheese grease goes a long way toward making our postcards have that special “homey” touch!)

CD1 is LaMalfa’s district which is spread out, red, and rural. The CD1 Democratic Alliance have asked us to write postcards to their rural democratic voters, encouraging them to turn out to vote. We are not endorsing a candidate, just advocating power to the polls.

Our appeal will be directly to the voters in CA-1 – NOT mass political mailings, because all of our cards will be handwritten. Each will be a message from one voter to another. We are simply asking Americans to do that most American thing — VOTE!

Here are some tidbits from LaMalfa’s reelection site to inspire us:

“I am proud to have earned an A rating and the endorsements of the NRA and Gun Owners of America.”

Monday 3/26 – “This is the use of religion to hurt people because you disapprove of who they are.” Deadline to comment tomorrow!

Quote from  Harper Jean Tobin of the National Center for Transgender Equality.

You are sitting in one of those horrible backless gowns on a paper-covered table, waiting…

You are sick, or hurt, or need a legal medical procedure. This is not where you want to be right now, but you need help.

If you can’t imagine for yourself, do so for your child, or grandchild…

The door opens. A scrubs-covered medical professional comes in, reading a file.

A moment of silence.

“Treating you would violate my sincerely-held religious beliefs. You’ll have to wait until we can find someone else to deal with you.”

Door closes.

A new HHS rule would allow physicians and health care workers to opt out of procedures that conflict with their religious teachings…We need to send in comments today and tomorrow to stop this.

You do not need to be a woman to feel the importance of this.
You do not need to be part of the LGBTQ community.
You just need to do what we say we do.
Stand INDIVISIBLE with vulnerable Americans, who are, even now, being traumatized by these types of behavior. This proposal just lets offenders off without consequences.

We really like this gif-filled explanation guide from the National Women’s Law Center. Lots of information in here to use in your comments.

1. This rule is definitely NOT about patients.

Friday 3/23 – A “NO” that counts double! – an inappropriate nominee AND a NRA favorite!

HOWARD NIELSON IS A RADICAL RIGHT-WING CHOICE FOR THE JUDICIARY, AND THE SENATE MUST STOP HIS CONFIRMATION.

We’ve talked about Howard Nielson before…one more of the seemingly endless supply of  reactionary hard-right candidates the Trump administration has loaded up, ready to take over lifetime appointments in our court system.

Pay attention to what he’s done. Not what he says…

  • Anti-LGBTQ+: Nielson defended the anti-LGBTQ Proposition 8 in California by arguing that the federal judge hearing the case should be disqualified for being gay. His bigoted motion to disqualify the judge was denied. During the court case, he put forth the arguments that same-sex attraction was a choice and that LGBTQ individuals were not discriminated against. He also wrote an amicus brief against Obergefell v. Hodges, the case that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
  • Politicized the DoJ: In 2002, Nielson participated in the illegal politicization of the hiring process for civil servants at the Justice Department by screening out left-leaning candidates for openings. In a report regarding this, he inspector general added, “the problem was not necessarily with the law. The problem was with the application of the law by the people in the Department of Justice, which is very troubling that the Department of Justice would not adhere to the law.”
  • Pro-Torture: Nielson’s involvement with issues of torture and executive power must be fully disclosed. He worked under Steven Bradbury (the architect of the Bush-era torture regime and a recently-confirmed Trump administration lawyer) during the George W. Bush administration, and assisted Bradbury in crafting the legal rationale to justify torture of detainees. Nielson’s argument that the US could torture people as long as they weren’t physically in the US caused Betty Van Schaack, former Deputy to the Ambassador-at-large for War Crimes, to say that his

“erroneous legal reasoning and conclusions” were so flawed that the memo should be “add[ed] . . . to the Legal Scrapheap.”  Continue reading “Friday 3/23 – A “NO” that counts double! – an inappropriate nominee AND a NRA favorite!”

Monday is busy, folks! 2 urgent calls, 2 written comments – all laid out for fast action!

Calls actions – Two quick ones that are being voted on today! If you’ve called before, call again. These are that important.

Call #1 – This dangerous anti-choice bill is scheduled for voting on Monday at 5:30 pm. Get your calls in early. Try the DC offices first.

The House has already passed their version of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) plans to bring the Senate version (S. 1922) to a vote this week, perhaps in time for the State of the Union address and in a calculated move to target Democrats before the midterms.

Why is access to abortions after 20 weeks so important? Read this woman’s story and this one. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, download it on itunes.

Minimal Script: I am calling from [zip code] to thank Sen. [___] for supporting a woman’s essential liberty to choose what’s necessary for her and her family in consultation with her medical advisors and to strongly and publicly oppose S. 1922 – Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

and Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884

Friday Clean-up: Be a volunteer, calls on immigration and anti-choice bills.

Help people become citizens…and voters!

Here’s something we, as private citizens, can do to help our neighbors through a process that was usually much easier when many of our own families crossed into America. (Exceptions here)

Feb 1st: Train to be a Citizenship Fair Volunteer!

Come listen to an enlightening, frightening and often hilarious lecture from local immigration attorney Vanessa Frank on how to help a green card holder navigate successfully through their N-400 “Application for Naturalization” form. You do not need to be able to speak Spanish. Sign up for a shift at the next Citizenship Fair, Feb. 3rd. Also volunteers are needed to work with the children, do registration at the door, etc..

5-7 pm at the UU Church of Ventura. 5654 Ralston Street, Ventura.

Feb. 3rd: Citizenship Fair (There will be more!)

Link for flyer here. Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm (sign up for available time shifts) at the Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School Cafeteria. 301 N. Marquite St. Oxnard, CA 93030

Tell any Green Card holders you know who are eligible to apply for citizenship to register for this Fair!

The Fair itsef is free and applicants do not have to live in Ventura County. There are great immigration lawyers on-hand to assist the volunteers on any knotty problems that may be encountered. The applicants end up with a completed form, with required photos attached, ready to send in to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Yes, this is a very big deal.

However, the first step is that they need to register here:

805UNITEDFORALL@GMAIL.COM or call (213) 446-4851
Link for flyer here.

It’s truly one of the most amazing volunteer opportunties!

(Even if you’ve made these calls before, do it again. Our Democratic legislators need your calls on their tallies and they need to know you’ve got their back.) Continue reading “Friday Clean-up: Be a volunteer, calls on immigration and anti-choice bills.”
