Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News! – The “Five Smooth Stones” Edition

(excerpt from Randi Weingarten’s speech  for the American Federation of Teachers)
“When leaders controlling the federal government are hell-bent on taking away health care from 32 million people in order to give a tax cut to the ultra-wealthy, we are David to their Goliath. When officials far from the classroom care a whole lot about testing and test scores, but don’t give a damn about what our students really need, we are David to their Goliath. When hedge funders, billionaires and anti-labor ideologues band together in an axis of inequality, further rigging our political and economic system against working folks, we are David to their Goliath. When a presidential administration takes actions that make immigrant students afraid to dream, that favor fraudulent for-profit colleges over students seeking an education, that put an entire religion in its crosshairs, we are David to their Goliath. When governors in state after state go after labor rights and voting rights, and they find an ally in the newest Supreme Court justice who will hear the Janus case, we must be David to their Goliath.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the Valley of Elah, where the standoff between David and Goliath took place. And if you remember Sunday school, you’ll recall: That wasn’t a fair fight, either. Goliath was big; David was a little guy. Goliath had an army. And David? David had a sling — with five smooth stones. But David had a plan. Healthy California Pride

With the repeal of the flawed and partially defunded ACA on the horizon, and the abhorrent plans to replace it with something that is not care, but a tax cut for the wealthy, it’s time to let Congress know we wish to have health care for all people like all other modern industrialized nations.

It’s very likely that they won’t make a decision on #Trumpcare until the end of session in Congress, which is why we need to make our voices heard across the country to tell our elected officials that the option is Medicare for all in the U.S. and more specifically, CA.

Let us also send a message to California Speaker Anthony Rendon —> stop blocking healthcare for all & let the Assembly VOTE on SB 562 – the single-payer health care bill!

As Senator Murkowski said, “She did not come to Washington to hurt people.” Let’s thank her.

Thanks to three Republican women senators, Obamacare might just survive the GOP’s campaign to repeal it. The fight is not over, so keep calling our own senators with words of encouragement in this fight, but let’s thank these women for their courage to stand up against their own party and for wanting to see something better for their constituents and the rest of us.

Healthcare Whiplash Wednesday thru Friday – Just keep calling…(Update)

Update 7/21: 

Like the Monty Python skit, the GOP Senate health care effort is not dead yet.

There are many confusing options and money being thrown on the table and there is a tremendous amount of pressure without regard to human life and economic impact.

The GOP would like us to be quiet now but we cannot be.

Trump does not want Congress to leave for August recess until a bill is passed.

They couldn’t come up with a good bill in seven years; a few weeks will not be the charm.

As Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz tweeted: “Under-appreciated in 2017 is the biggest grassroots movement in human history just formed w/no politician in charge. Power to the people.”

We are those people!

Please keep up the pressure with your Senators!

(Ben Wikler, MoveOn) “…we need to make sure zombie Trumpcare stays in its grave. Remember, McConnell is still insisting on a vote next week on repealing the Affordable Care Act, even though he doesn’t have the votes to pass it—apparently because he wants to be able to say he tried before moving on to tax cuts for billionaires. We need to make absolutely sure that vote goes down in flames. But even after that, even if Republicans can’t repeal it legislatively, Trump will keep trying to sabotage it through executive action. And Trump’s budget calls for hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid. We still have to resist with all our might.

And it’s also time to look ahead. We must hold accountable everyone who voted for this hideous bill or came close to supporting it—and prepare to throw dozens of Republicans out of Congress next fall. And it’s time to rally Democrats in support of the visionary step forward that America still desperately needs: Medicare for All. “

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News! – The “Holding Hands” Edition

As soon as I read this story…I knew that I wasn’t alone in thinking how inspirational this was. Alison & Stephanie connected it to this amazing essay from Rebecca Solnit comparing the conservative ideology of isolation to the reality of our communion with each other and the world:
“The modern right may wish that every man were an island, entire of himself, but no one is wholly independent. You can’t survive without taking air into your lungs, you didn’t give birth to or raise yourself, you won’t bury yourself, and in between you won’t produce most of the goods and services you depend on to live. Your gut is full of microorganisms, without which you could not digest all the plants and animals, likely grown by other people, on which you rely to survive. We are nodes on intricate systems, synapses snapping on a great collective brain; we are in it together, for better or worse.”

Yesterday, we posted the Friday 10-minute Resistance Diet. It consisted of 3 issues for our senators and 2 for our representative, plus 2 written regulatory comments. If one keeps the written comments short and pithy, it can be done in LESS than 10 minutes. I used the spare time to call a few more of Feinstein’s offices.
– Why do I need to do this? Aren’t there enough of you people doing this already?
What the GOP is doing can cost you thousands of dollars, a bankruptcy, or even your health, your life or the life of someone you care about. Pretty big stakes. Yeah, we’re crazy committed, but we can’t personally make the thousands of calls a day that are necessary to make the GOP nervous. Please jump in. It gets faster and easier. It makes you powerful.
