Help our Ailing Homeless – Urge our State Senators to support AB 1971 in its Original Form!

No fellow human being unable to make medical decisions for his or herself should die on our streets. Sadly, some people are so mentally ill that they do not know they’re sick.

We need to change the definition of “gravely disabled” to include those who cannot care for themselves medically to ensure first responders and medical professionals have the authority to direct these people to treatment.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I am calling to urge the Senator [___] to support AB 1971 in the form unanimously voted for in the Assembly, NOT as amended by the Senate Judiciary committee.

Why this is so important:

Much of this text is from an exceptional op-ed in the Ventura County Star by Mary Haffner, an attorney and member of the Ventura Unified School District and Ventura County Behavioral Health Advisory boards. Read the full text here

On June 26, the California Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony regarding Assembly Bill 1971, which would expand the definition of “gravely disabled” to include medical necessity. Existing law does not recognize a person’s inability to provide for his or her basic personal needs for health as an element of grave disability. AB 1971 can change this.

Homelessness and homeless encampments have become a part of the permanent landscape of California, and approximately 33 percent of these people suffer from serious mental illness. A subset of the mentally ill lack the capacity to understand that without medical intervention, they will die

We need the tools to intervene. AB 1971 addresses this public health crisis and would give first responders and medical professionals the authority to direct these people to treatment.

AB 1971 passed with overwhelming support through two Assembly committees and the Senate Health Committee. On June 26, however, Continue reading “Help our Ailing Homeless – Urge our State Senators to support AB 1971 in its Original Form!”

America is greater than this…

Right now, the Trump administration is asking their supporters to swamp Democratic senators with a message. A message that they will be blamed for a shutdown by choosing “illegal immigrants” over the healthcare of 9 million kids…

…a message that our great country has sunk to the level of a “hunger-games” dystopia, where we can afford to give huge tax-cut giveaways to the wealthy and corporations, but can only leave a few beans at the bottom of a can for our children to scrabble over.

But America is greater than that.

And they are ALL our children.

The kids who born here, and the ones that weren’t. Just like America has been since its beginning.

These are the kids that need the CHIP insurance that the GOP couldn’t fit into their busy schedule of party-line health care repeals and tax-scams.

Voting is our power. Don’t let it be taken away with a keystroke.

Pass the SAVE Act (S. 2035)

The more we learn about voting hacks and other problems, the notion of going back to paper ballots is gaining attention.  Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) has introduced the SAVE Act (S. 2035) but his bill is stuck in the Rules and Administration Committee.  Let’s ask our own senators to sign on as co-sponsors.

Minimal Script:  I’m calling from zip code […] to urge Senator [__] to co-sponsor and vote YES on the SAVE Act. We need to protect voting systems in the US against intrusion, theft, manipulation, and deletion of voter registration data and ballots, and prevent cyberattacks from malicious computer hacker

DEADLINE TODAY! Write. It takes less than 5 minutes to save the Tule Elk.

Take a moment to write a comment supporting the continued existence of the tule elk, a subspecies of elk that was decimated nearly to extinction.  (Californians need to call too. Script below.)

This is what we’re in danger of losing (This video is from 2009)…

A small protected population survives in California, and now livestock interests are pressing the National Park Service to kill them or severely restrict their movements (which has previously led to starvation) so that the relatively small amount of public land allotted to this native species can instead be used to graze their cattle. Speak up so that they can survive and remain free-roaming.

Write! It’s easy! Use this link to make your public comment TODAY NOV. 15TH.

Show some love, California! Stand Indivisible. #StandwithFrederica.

Quick recap for those who missed this whole stupid excuse to beat on a successful black woman…
Rep. Frederica Wilson contradicted Trump’s story when he attacked Myeshia Johnson’s account of his “condolence” call regarding the death of her husband La David. Now Trump’s revenge against Wilson has spiraled out of control. WH Chief of Staff John Kelly has jettisoned his honor and dignity  to defame the legislator, lying about an incident in which contrary video evidence exists.

Now to Trevor Noah for the rest of the story…

Meanwhile, a storm of hate has hit Wilson’s office.

(from Chop Wood, Carry Water)

“I heard and read about the awful, racist phone calls coming in to Rep Frederica Wilson and picked up the phone to give her my support today. The guy who answered the phone sounded really overwhelmed. He said it’s mostly hate mail and phone calls from all over the country but a few people have called in support.

If you have a minute, pick up the phone and let them know it’s not all racists and Trump supporters out there. Sounds like Wilson’s staff needs a hug.”

NO! NO! NO! Don’t let Trump Push the Nuclear Button without Congressional Permission!

Representatives

Minimal Script: I am calling from [zip code] to ask Rep. [___] to co-sponsor H.R. 669 – “Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017”.

More script if you want it: Trump should not be allowed to launch a nuclear first strike without a declaration of war by Congress. I believe that this bill preserves Constitutional checks and balances on Executive powers.

Rep. Salud Carbajal has already signed. Thank him by email
