This Week in Resistance – “Playing Chicken with Kim” Edition

Best quote: “We sent Dennis Rodman. I can’t believe that didn’t work.”

(Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)  said of the retired American basketball player who has taken several trips to North Korea.)

For the most accurate analysis of what’s happening between Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, we once again turn to our nation’s comedians.

This Week in Resistance – “Welcome to your Heritage. Bring a Mask!”

We have until August 24th to speak for our National Monuments…

(Photo of Taylor McKinnon , Public Lands Campaign director for the Center for Biological Diversity, TucsonSentinal.com)

This week in our daily actions blog, we posted a letter from Sierra Club’s Jim Hines regarding the Trump administration’s response to the overwhelming number of comments to protect Bears Ears and other western national monuments. (Here’s the number as of today. It keeps growing as comments are tabulated.) Continue reading “This Week in Resistance – “Welcome to your Heritage. Bring a Mask!””

Block Trump from sabotaging the ACA

Trump doesn’t need the Senate to make Obamacare “implode.” In the works is a plan to withhold payments that enable insurers to offer lower-cost individual insurance plans. He’s also discouraging the IRS from enforcing the individual mandate. Meanwhile Tom Price, Health and Human Services secretary, has been misdirecting funds for enrollment outreach to make videos critical of the ACA.  Call an end to all of this sabotage.

Sample script: I’m calling [___]  to stop Trump and Tom Price from making Obamacare “implode.” Stop withholding of payments to insurers for lower cost insurance plans. Stop discouraging the IRS from enforcing the individual mandate and stop the misuse of funds for enrollment outreach.

This Week in Resistance – “Snatch a knot in their Ass” Edition

(Awesome picture from 2007 Bethesda Softworks, LLC. No, this is not real)

Yes, we can take a well-earned minute to glory in the GOP’s healthcare debacle in the Senate Thursday night. But not for long, as it was a very close vote. 49 senators voted against all decency and humanity to risk destroying our healthcare system, people’s lives and a major part of our economy.

Our President has vowed to destroy any bits of Obamacare that survived this vote, while his minions work tirelessly to dismantle every aspect of our government and sell off its parts to the highest or most well-connected bidders.

But that’s business as usual…at least, for one of his businesses.

In addition to learning a sprightly new phrase from Georgia Congressman Buddy Carter, who spent, good god, a whole 27.5 hours working on this healthcare thing, let’s talk about what happened this week…

Remember the 49.

remember the 49

In case you haven’t tuned in yet, the Senate’s latest vote against any reasonable form of healthcare for their fellow Americans did not go well for them.

However, 49 senators did vote to destroy our healthcare system, despite the months of direct messages from those who would be harmed, including the insurance industry and their own constituents.

Playing chicken with our health…

This horrendous game continues with a mystery bill. But we can still win this!

Whatever Mitch McConnell comes up with to get 50 votes will be a nightmare for any state. However, by using budget reconciliation, legislation has to comply with the Byrd Rule, as judged by the Senate Parliamentarian. Democrats must call out any provision (and there are at least seven of them) that don’t comply.

How do we win? We bury them ALL in calls.

If they are Democrats, they need your support AND big call tallies to show their GOP colleagues.

If they are Republicans, tell them to start collecting packing boxes. If you have friends or family with GOP senators, have them join you in this battle.

Script for Dem Senators: I calling to ask Senator [___] to continue to fight the TrumpCare bill with “point of order” objections to anything that breaks the Byrd rules, and to offer as many amendments as possible to delay final voting.

Script for Republican Senators: I calling to ask Senator [___] to vote against whichever version of TrumpCare bill is on the table today. These proposals will destroy the lives of thousands of people from our state and we will all remember your actions next time voting comes around.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News! – The “Five Smooth Stones” Edition

(excerpt from Randi Weingarten’s speech  for the American Federation of Teachers)
“When leaders controlling the federal government are hell-bent on taking away health care from 32 million people in order to give a tax cut to the ultra-wealthy, we are David to their Goliath. When officials far from the classroom care a whole lot about testing and test scores, but don’t give a damn about what our students really need, we are David to their Goliath. When hedge funders, billionaires and anti-labor ideologues band together in an axis of inequality, further rigging our political and economic system against working folks, we are David to their Goliath. When a presidential administration takes actions that make immigrant students afraid to dream, that favor fraudulent for-profit colleges over students seeking an education, that put an entire religion in its crosshairs, we are David to their Goliath. When governors in state after state go after labor rights and voting rights, and they find an ally in the newest Supreme Court justice who will hear the Janus case, we must be David to their Goliath.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the Valley of Elah, where the standoff between David and Goliath took place. And if you remember Sunday school, you’ll recall: That wasn’t a fair fight, either. Goliath was big; David was a little guy. Goliath had an army. And David? David had a sling — with five smooth stones. But David had a plan. Goliath no doubt assumed his greater strength was enough, but we all know how that ended up.” Continue reading “Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News! – The “Five Smooth Stones” Edition”

MEDICARE FOR ALL MARCH LA

Healthy California Pride

With the repeal of the flawed and partially defunded ACA on the horizon, and the abhorrent plans to replace it with something that is not care, but a tax cut for the wealthy, it’s time to let Congress know we wish to have health care for all people like all other modern industrialized nations.

It’s very likely that they won’t make a decision on #Trumpcare until the end of session in Congress, which is why we need to make our voices heard across the country to tell our elected officials that the option is Medicare for all in the U.S. and more specifically, CA.

Let us also send a message to California Speaker Anthony Rendon —> stop blocking healthcare for all & let the Assembly VOTE on SB 562 – the single-payer health care bill!

We will be meeting at
