It’s decision time for hundreds of pieces of legislation in California this week. Make some calls!
The Senate’s fiscal committee will decide the fate of bills on Thursday, June 1st; the Assembly will do so on Friday, June 2nd. The ones that pass will then move to the opposite house.
With our strong Democratic majority, California has the ability to counter some of the negative policies coming out of Washington D.C. Our friends at Indivisible San Francisco short-listed some of the most important bills. If you have time this week, please pick the ones that speak the most to you, and make some phone calls.
State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Assemblywoman Monique Limon don’t receive many calls from their constituents, so if we all make our voices heard this week, we can make a real difference.
CALL TO STATE ACTION

This Week In Resistance – “The Not-so-Innocents Abroad” Edition
In what universe did Jared think setting up a backchannel to the Russians was OK?

Jeff Session’s out of control. Time to stop his racist mass imprisonment plan!
Support the bipartisan Justice Safety Valve Act (HR 2435/S1127)
AG Jeff Sessions is advocating institutional racism with mandatory minimum sentencing, which conservatives and liberals alike see as destructive to generations of minorities, impacting their future ability to vote, rent an apartment, or get a job. Whites use drugs equally but minorities are 4-5 times more likely to be convicted, which destroys their lives, families and communities.
Script: I’m calling today to urge (___) to support the bipartisan Justice Safety Valve Act. Please resist Attorney General Jeff Session’s attempt to double down on mass incarceration.
Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-saving Good News: Wonder Women Unleash Their Lassos of Truth Edition!
Women dominated the resistance news cycle this week – Wonder Women Unite! But first, some crazy-good news…
Former FBI director Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. To everyone who protested or called their member of Congress to demand an investigation: You helped make this happen! Indivisible Ventura hammered this issue from every angle we could think of – 22 calls to action – and your calls made a difference!
Single payer health care is closer to becoming law in New York and California than ever before but if we want it, everyone is going to have to ask for it. Tell Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson that you care about SB562: SAC (916) 651-4019, SB (805) 965-0862, (805) 988-1940 See the full call to action here.
These guys are ROCKSTARS! The ACLU took legal action to force Trump to produce evidence of voter fraud claims. How many executive orders have lawsuits against them? We’ve kinda lost count.
Public support for gay marriage has reached a new high.
Wonder Women Unleash Their Lassos of Truth!
Last Sunday was Mother’s Day. 42 years before it became an official holiday filled with roses, chocolate and Kodak moments, it was something quite different… and we can be proud to say that women have risen again to resist.

Thank Monique Limón for Fighting Childhood Poverty!
California has the highest rate of child poverty in the nation.
Our Assemblymember Monique Limón is a co-author of AB 1520, the Lifting Children and Families Out of Poverty Act, which will help raise 1 million children in California out of poverty. Let’s thank Monique Limón for taking a stand to help children and families in California.

We Lost Our First Healthcare Battle – Here’s How We Win the War: The 14 Congressmen we are “Dying” to Meet.
GAME ON! Update: We now have three die-ins scheduled – click in to join us!
We knew they had finally gotten all the support they needed when they announced they were bringing this monstrosity to a vote yesterday. In fact, they got 14 of the votes they needed from us, from California. Now this circus of tragedies moves on to the Senate and we are lucky that our Senators, Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, are on our side (though we will be reminding them both that we are watching). But we’re a minority there too.
So now, what do we do about these 14 California congresspeople (see the list below) who cheerfully sold out women, older people, the sick, those with pre-existing conditions, Planned Parenthood and special needs kids to insurance company lobbyists, wealthy donors and a President who counts a “win” over a promise?
We fight them, of course!
This will be a personal fight. We will all be dealing with the fallout of what happened today.
This will be a moral fight. No one deserves to be bankrupted after a lifetime of work because insurance companies executives demand a higher profit margin. More importantly, no one deserves to die of a treatable condition in a first world country because they can’t afford care.
So we will fight them, in a variety of ways. Don’t worry, there are enough battlefields for everyone.
– We will make their lives miserable with media events such as die-ins.
– We will add to chanting crowds outside their Town Halls, if they ever dare to have one again.
– We will help their districts replace them with reasonable, responsible representatives. We’ll need people to help phone bank, and walk precincts.
– We’ll build bridges to people who voted for Trump because they believed his bogus healthcare promises.
This is going to involve time, people, and transportation.
What can you do to help?
Read this. This is a one strategy…
https://www.indivisibleguide.com/resource/die-in-planning-guide/
– Will you be a “Die-In” Captain and coordinate the organizational effort?
– Will you help drive people to other districts to provide more people power?
– Will you participate in peaceful demonstrations in these members’ districts?
– Will you commit to phone banking for their opposition?
– Will you commit to precinct walking for their opposition?
– Will you write letters to the Editor?
– Will you participate in a coordinated social media campaign?
– Keep up-to-date with your local Indivisible chapter. We will be publishing protest opportunities. Send them in if you see some before we do to indivisibleventura@gmail.com
Send in your name and what you are willing do, plus any additional great ideas to indivisibleventura@gmail.com.
Politics is a messy business. We’re not sure if this whole thing was stage-managed to help Trump get his “win”, or to divert our attention away from the EPA mess, the regulation fiddling or even the Russian fiasco.
But we’re taking them all on.
Welcome to the Resistance!

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-saving Good News!
We made big leaps this week with the stupid border wall, climate change, immigration, voting, and women’s rights. Also, believe it or not, Trump’s greatest accomplishment is actually a good thing! Gotta love those unintended consequences!
Don’t Frack with our future! The Ventura Climate March became a GIANT art instillation – we hiked up our vertical Botanical Gardens in coordinated bright colors to become a human thermometer. With drones flying overhead and photographers hiking all over the opposite hillside, some stunning pics should come out of the celebration. Watch the Facebook page for them!
Buh-bye Border Wall! The government spending bill will not include funds for the wall. Lawmakers in border states are united against this stupid wall, why go on? Our action calls are working!
California won’t back down: Trump’s order to defund sanctuary cities was blocked by a U.S. District Court Judge in San Francisco. Continue to fight for California’s Sanctuary Bill by making your phone calls – action item here.
Voters won’t back down either! A new poll showed 63% of Democrats nationwide feel “very excited” about voting in 2018, and they’ll have plenty of choices in the primary: There’s a 58% increase in Democratic candidates.
In fact, Trump’s greatest achievement so far? He has sparked one of the greatest surges of American citizen action in half a century!

April is Sexual Violence Awareness Month and Congress wants to defund programs that protect women! (1 of 2)
Say NO to defunding any Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) programs. VAWA has made significant progress helping victims of domestic & date violence, sexual assault, elder abuse and stalking achieve justice and safety, with federally federally funded direct services such as shelter, rape crisis services, legal assistance, and counseling.
[And when you’re done calling, do a happy dance to celebrate the end of Bill O’Reilly’s run at Fox News.]

Script: I’m calling to ask (_____) to stand against any attempt to defund the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). It was passed with bipartisan support and has been incredibly effective in saving lives and money.
Call all three Members of Congress
Rep. Julia Brownley: DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

Say No to HUD budget cuts: Budget cuts should not be on the backs of the poorest Americans!
Trump has proposed $6.2 billion in cuts to Housing and Urban Development (HUD), slashing funding for Community Development Block Grants, public housing, housing vouchers, and programs serving the homeless. These are essential programs for those most in need of help, including veterans, the disabled, seniors, working poor, and youth aging out of foster care.
Script: I’m calling (____) to reject any cuts in HUD funding that increases homelessness. People will actually die from these cuts, and our emergency services will be overwhelmed. Instead of paying for our jetsetting President to golf or campaign, let’s invest in helping our own.
Call all three Members of Congress
