Sat/Sun – 3/14-15: Activism in a time of solitude.

Our country may be on lockdown, but the resistance is flexible…

We at Indivisible Ventura assessed our activity calendar to see what we could still accomplish during this quarantine period. The answer? A lot, just not the activities that require us to be in the same place. Keep calling your legislators, keep writing comments to the regulators, and participate in the peaceful democratic actions outlined below that connect us to writers, texters, callers and voters across America.

  • We updated our “events” calendar here
  •  All activities located on college campuses have been cancelled until the quarantine is lifted. This includes all our voter registration and census education dates.
  • Both citizenship fairs this month have been cancelled. If you are a person or know a person needing immigration services, including citizenship forms, DACA and green card renewals, please contact our trusted partners for assistance:

POSTCARD ACTIVITIES:

Postcard Action #1 – UPDATE: The April 16th’s Postcard Party is CANCELLED – but that doesn’t mean 500 folks in Arizona won’t be getting hand-written postcards!

image9.png

We will be putting together kits of cards, scripts and addresses for Arizona – We’ll be sending 500 postcards to voters along with a short script from Center For Common Ground’s Reclaim our Vote Campaign, who is working with the NAACP, Black Voters Matter, Mi Familia Vota, VoteRiders and DemLabs. These voters may have been dropped from voting rolls. This reminder postcard could save voters being turned away, a horrible experience, after waiting hours in line. The dignity of very single vote matters.

For those who have already attended our postcard parties, here’s what we need from you to get your kit:

  • Email us at indivisibleventura@gmail.com
  • Subject line: Mail me some postcards! (This is important – so we can quickly see your email)
  • Give us the following information: Your name, address and how many postcards, in batches of (10) ten, you want. If you also need stamps, let us know.

Postcard Action #2 – Write postcards for Christy Smith! Keep CA-25 blue!

Wed – 10/17: Today’s Action Prescription

We regularly hear that people are stressed out and discouraged by the constant stream of bad news as our government drifts further into authoritarianism and fascism. For many of us, this is our first dive into active resistance and are panicking because we can’t see the bottom of the pool. But drowning is not an option and for people of conscience, neither is hauling ourselves out and leaving. How did the women’s suffrage movement survive for almost a hundred years? How have POC and our Native American communities maintained sustained resistance efforts over a long time? How do we develop resiliency right now?

Action #1 – Watch this video. Really.

#CorkerKickback – A Holiday gift to Trump and more than a quarter of all GOP Senators! Last Day! Go nuts!

The House is scheduled to vote today; the Senate tomorrow.

Amongst all the other provisions transferring wealth from the poor and middle class to the wealthy and corporations, is a last minute giveaway to the richest, not only to their wealthy donors but an early Christmas gift to President “I’m very greedy”  Trump and themselves too.

“According to an analysis of federal records by the International Business Times (IBT), a “special provision” buried in the 500-page Republican tax bill—which has come to be known as the #CorkerKickback—could amount to a combined $14 million annual income boost for “more than a quarter of all GOP senators.” (CommonDreams)

As IBT reports:

In all, 14 Republican senators (see list below) hold financial interests in 26 income-generating real-estate partnerships—worth as much as $105 million in total. Those holdings together produced between $2.4 million and $14.1 million in rent and interest income in 2016, according to federal records.

IBT first reported on the tax carve-out, which allows investors in “pass-through” entities, including real-estate partnerships such as LLCs and LPs, with few employees to deduct part of their income that passes through those partnerships.

Here’s who gains… Orrin Hatch, who wrote the provision, not surprisingly, one of it’s beneficiaries.

$14 million dollars! Now that’s a nice stocking stuffer!

Hey…let’s leave them a lump of coal instead, since they seem to like it so much!

#1 – Basic Call: Click here.

Do this even if you have a Democrat for a Representative and/or Senator, it matters. If calling seems to take too much time, try these tips to make calling faster. If calling makes you nervous, read here about how to make it easier.

#2 – Want some info on your particular legislator’s position? Click here.

OK, now pick one of these options and pledge to yourself a small block of time to help our country.

Here’s the latest in the fight for Alabama. There’s lots we can do to help.

Helping from far away or in Alabama…

#1. Help Color of Change get people registered.

Today, Monday, Nov. 27th, until 11:59 p.m., is the deadline for Voter Registration. News outlets are calling this race a statistical tie between Doug Jones, who prosecuted KKK members for killing four little girls in a church bombing,  and Roy Moore, a racist, homophobe and accused predatory pedophile. This is why we need to mobilize right now. Tomorrow will be too late. Help Color of Change pay for digital ads encouraging people to register.

They’ve been testing ads for the past few days, and they estimate that they can get 5 new Alabama voters to an online registration page for about $10.

If enough of us chip in, we can register thousands of voters in the next 24 hours and shift the tides of this race.

Help reach 5 new Alabama voters before the deadline ($10)

Help reach 20 new Alabama voters before the deadline ($40)

Help reach 50 new Alabama voters before the deadline ($100)

…or donate another amount.

#2. Tell you friends and relatives in Alabama to Register! Pass this information on in your social media!
