Thurs – 5/3: Immigration – Part 1 – Actions

#1 – Call out our legislators for the Dreamer Delay and pass the DREAM Act!

We’ve been resting on our laurels. With the false security of a federal court’s ruling giving DACA recipients a 90 day lifeline, we’ve turned our attention to jokes at a WH Correspondent’s Assoc. dinner, and Trump’s former and very expensive sex life.

Meanwhile, six states, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina and West Virginia, have filed a federal lawsuit to end DACA, arguing that the executive branch cannot “unilaterally grant unlawfully present aliens lawful presence and work authorization.”

Therefore, millions of hardworking, taxpaying DREAMers, are living in a legal nightmare. Last month, a 240-member bipartisan majority of the House asked Speaker Ryan to schedule a debate on pending bills to protect DREAMers. The “240” number is important, as it allows them to use an obscure rule called  “Queen of the hill” to hold votes on four different options, most votes wins.

  • H.R.3440Dream Act (a path to citizenship for DACA recipients and other DREAMers, with no enforcement trade-offs)
  • H.R.4796 – USA Act, sponsored by Hurd and Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA) (quicker legalization for DREAMers with limits on sponsorship of parents once they become citizens, with some border provisions but no money for a wall)
  • The Goodlatte bill (temporary status for DACA recipients plus stepped-up enforcement and legal immigration restrictions)
  • A fourth bill, probably some manifestation of Trump’s stated goals to end family re-unification and includes funding for a border wall.

Postcard Pizza Party for California Congressional District 25 on April 25th!

We will be joining a statewide effort to get out the vote in California Congressional District 25!

When: Wednesday, April 25th at 11:00AM – 2:00 PM
Where: Santino’s Pizza Parlor – 4321 Telegraph Rd, Ventura
Fun! Pizza will be provided! (A little cheese grease goes a long way toward making our postcards have that special “homey” touch!)

CD25 is Steve Knight’s district which includes part of Ventura County, Santa Clarita, Lancaster, and Palmdale.  We Venturans can’t vote Knight out, but we can help our neighbors rid themselves of him – and help ourselves by removing one of the 24 Trump minions needed to turn the House blue! We are not endorsing a candidate, just advocating power to the polls.

Our appeal will be directly to the voters in CA25 – NOT mass political mailings, because all of our cards will be handwritten. Each will be a message from one voter to another. We are simply asking Americans to do that most American thing — VOTE!

Here are some tidbits from about Steve Knight to inspire us:

Let us count the ways Steve Knight has betrayed us: He votes with Trump 98% of the time. He voted against our healthcare. The National Rifle Association gives him an A rating. He voted for the #TrumpTaxScam. He’s Continue reading “Postcard Pizza Party for California Congressional District 25 on April 25th!”

Whether your legislator is red or blue, FLOOD their lines today!

In addition to our regularly scheduled calls on media issues today, we’d like you to make two other calls, even if you’ve made them before.

#1 – DACA

Their time is running out.
The CR budget running out tomorrow night and Congress’ willingness to forge a bipartisan DACA bill. However, the president remains a moving target and now insists that he’d love a government shutdown if an immigration deal does not “get rid of these loopholes where killers are allowed to come into our country”.  Of course, actual research shows the opposite. Let’s tell our MoCs that we expect them to vote for and put forward a clean DACA bill.

Minimal Script: Hi. I’m calling from [zip code] to thank Rep./Sen [name] for supporting the Dream Act (H.R. 3440/S.1615), family unification, and to demand no funding for a wasteful wall or surplus border staffing.

Call Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779
or Rep. Salud Carbajal: (CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348

AND Call Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

and Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884

From Indivisible National – (1) action for today.

(From National Indivisible)

What to expect when Congress gets back in January

Congress will have a full plate when it gets back to DC. The Senate is expected to return on January 3, and the House is expected to return January 8. In addition to seating Doug Jones, they will immediately need to turn again to funding the government. New issues, like “welfare reform” and infrastructure will start to emerge as well. Here’s what we know will happen and what could happen.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN:

CONGRESS WILL HAVE TO FUND THE GOVERNMENT AGAIN.

Congress kicked the can of funding the government down the road by less than a month, until January 19. That means that the issue of keeping the lights on will be one of the first orders of business, along with other issues that have come to be wrapped up in government funding, like CHIP, surveillance, and disaster aid.

DEMOCRATS HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE TO DO THE RIGHT THING ON DREAM.

Even though using their considerable leverage on the funding bill to protect Dreamers was Senator Schumer’s idea, too many Democrats let that opportunity pass them by when the moment came. (Find out whether your Democratic Senator was a Dream Hero or a Dream Killer here.) With an average of 122 Dreamers losing their protection from deportation everyday, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi must follow through on using their leverage on funding the government as they promised they would to stand with Dreamers.

(Indivisible Ventura: Senator Feinstein almost reneged on her promise. Your calls made her stand up. Never underestimate the power of calling your Democratic legislators. Start revving up her courage and willpower starting today! Use this short script below and give her a “welcome back” call.) Continue reading “From Indivisible National – (1) action for today.”

Clean Dream Act. Dec. 22nd.

Yesterday, we talked about Paul Ryan’s call for more tax-paying citizens and how he forgot to mention that 800,000 pre-citizens already dwell peacefully with us, paying taxes and starting businesses. The loss of these Dreamers would be a such a huge hit to our economy that even the hyper-conservative Koch brothers are concerned.

But GOP legislators, exhausted after passing their masterpiece of looting and pillaging, want to go home with their families to celebrate, while 1,000 people lose their legal status every week.

Here are the Dream Heroes, that have already taken the pledge to vote ‘NO” on any Continuing Resolution (CR) that doesn’t include a clean DREAM ACT. (Check here for defectors, including our own Senator Dianne Feinstein)

Here are the Dream Killers, who haven’t.

#1 – Take 10 seconds and make this call. Give some courage to our legislators!

Clean Dream Act. Dec. 22nd.

Paul Ryan, in a statement that instantly made us think of Nazis, would like women to make more babies to strengthen our economy.

Of course, the GOP has also voted against every bill that would make pregnancy, childbirth and the raising of children affordable, much less sending them to college without crushing debt. Just yesterday, Ryan and his ilk passed the #TrumpTaxScam, a bill that prioritizes corporations, which cannot have children, over everyday citizens who can but can’t afford to, while setting the stage for the destruction of our safety net that will harm children as well as senior citizens.

So, instead of looking to the Nazis for economic answers, we have an immediate solution based on own American traditions… Immigration.

Let’s start now with the DACA/Dreamers, almost 800,000 already-grown people brought here by their parents as children, already educated in American schools, already fluent in English, already going to school, buying homes, in our military and  hospitals, starting businesses, and paying taxes. Exactly what Paul Ryan says we need.

The alternative to allowing our racism and xenophobia triumph is a huge hit to our economy.  So, if you know people who are unable to see the morality of helping the DACA kids, tell to support them for the economy. God, even the Koch brothers are saying we should do this. Hell has officially frozen over and it’s hosting skating parties.

The push for a clean Dream Act by Dec. 22nd continues!

Wednesday’s Call-in Prescription

Today is a continuation of our “Evacuation Special”, as our town and surrounding areas are literally on fire and we’ve relocated to a location with terrible internet access. Today’s post will be notable  for its lateness and weird format. (Picture of Hawaiian Village Apartments, which housed 50 families, including two of our members.)

Notice: Due to the terrible air quality and the high winds predicted for tomorrow, Thursday, 12/6, Indivisible Ventura’s rally to save net neutrality is cancelled!

The rally scheduled for 12 pm – 2 pm at the Verizon office across from the Pacific View Mall on Mills Road is cancelled. Keep your signs though. We are planning to reschedule prior to the vote by the FCC. Stay tuned.

#1. Fight the #TrumpTaxScam. Every. Damn. Day.

Make calling your legislators about the #TrumpTaxScam a daily habit until this fight is done. The level of public protest matters. Politicians monitor their office’s call tallies daily to see if they can continue their corrupt policies with impunity. Show them that we’re watching and that they will pay with their jobs at the poll-booth.

Minimum Script for Dems: My zip code is [#####] and I’m calling to thank Sen./Rep. [Name] for fighting against the Republican tax bill, and I urge [her/him] to keep doing everything possible to defeat it. [Optional: Insert sentence about how the bill will personally affect you.] Thank you.”

Minimal Script for GOP:  My zip code is [#####], and I am stunned and furious that you’ve betrayed the American people to give tax cuts to billionaires. I will do everything in my power to make sure you never get re-elected. Thank you.”
