Whether your legislator is red or blue, FLOOD their lines today!

In addition to our regularly scheduled calls on media issues today, we’d like you to make two other calls, even if you’ve made them before.

#1 – DACA

Their time is running out.
The CR budget running out tomorrow night and Congress’ willingness to forge a bipartisan DACA bill. However, the president remains a moving target and now insists that he’d love a government shutdown if an immigration deal does not “get rid of these loopholes where killers are allowed to come into our country”.  Of course, actual research shows the opposite. Let’s tell our MoCs that we expect them to vote for and put forward a clean DACA bill.

Minimal Script: Hi. I’m calling from [zip code] to thank Rep./Sen [name] for supporting the Dream Act (H.R. 3440/S.1615), family unification, and to demand no funding for a wasteful wall or surplus border staffing.

Call Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779
or Rep. Salud Carbajal: (CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348

AND Call Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

and Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884

#2 – NO on Farr

This guy, who the Rev. William J. Barber described in TIME magazine as “moral poison“,  just passed through the GOP-dominated Senate Judiciary Committee and is heading to the floor.

Thomas Alvin Farr has a history of condoning race-based voter suppression. For the last three decades, he represented the campaign of the ultraconservative Senator Jesse Helms at a time when the campaign was accused of taking part in conduct designed to intimidate black voters, and has committed himself to two main missions: disenfranchising voters of color and attacking workers’ rights. Now he’s up for nomination again a second time for 2018, two times too many. Says the Rev. Barber: “We will have to repent in this generation,” Dr. Martin Luther King wrote from an Alabama jail, “not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people… but for the appalling silence of the good people.” For the love of God, let them hear you.”

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [ZIP]. I would like the Senator [___] to oppose the seating of Thomas Farr to a seat on a U.S. District Court.

Senator Feinstein:  DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

and Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884

#3 – Imagine the whole country on FOX…

MEDIA – Stop the Sinclair-Tribune Merger and the creation of a right-wing media monopoly.
Sinclair Broadcasting, an extreme right-wing media group, is about to become the largest owner of TV stations in America, reaching 72% of the country. That’s why we’re calling on the Department of Justice to block the Sinclair-Tribune merger. There have been reports in recent days that the Department of Justice is “close” to approving the merger, but if enough people speak out, we can get the FCC and the DOJ to change course.

DOJ Comment Page: https://www.justice.gov/atr/webform/website-comments-and-suggestions-0

FCC Comment Page: https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/express

Sample Written Script: Sinclair Broadcast Group and Tribune should never be allowed to merge. If this deal goes through, a single company would own more than 200 local-TV stations reaching more than 72 percent of the country. That’s far beyond the legal limits on media ownership and far too much power in the hands of a single company. Sinclair has evaded FCC rules, received FCC fines for airing propaganda, and drawn wide criticism for airing politically slanted content on its stations. The FCC should block this merger and restore policies that encourage a diversity of local media owners and a wide range of viewpoints.

#4 – Taking back the free internet, one state at a time…

NET NEUTRALITY – Protect the Open Internet in California

Senate Bill 822 would require broadband companies doing business in California to comply with net neutrality regulations if they are relying on state infrastructure or state funding. That means agreeing to net neutrality would be a condition in state contracts and cable franchise agreements.

Minimal Script: I am calling from [zip code] to urge Senator [___] to support Senate Bill 822  that would require companies to follow net neutrality principles in California.
State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (SD-19): SAC (916) 651-4019, SB (805) 965-0862, OX (805)988-1940
