Thurs – 8/9: Thanks to all for helping to bring the Sinclair deal down!

Action #1 – Thank you for helping on this!

No action here. Just thanks for your loyal opposition to the Sinclair/Tribune merger – calling, emailing, writing and generally making a ruckus.

Action #2 – Follow up – Tell the FCC to revoke Sinclair’s broadcasting license.

In April, 2018, Ajit Pai stated that the FCC wouldn’t pull Sinclair’s broadcast license due to their distorted news coverage. Well, how about now?  “As details of Sinclair’s deceptions emerge — and with other investigations underway at the Department of Justice — it’s reasonable to question whether the broadcaster deserves to hold any licenses to profit off the public airwaves.” says Craig Aaron, the CEO of the public interest group Free Press. Great idea, Mr. Aaron, as unethical behavior is one of the numerous ways to lose a broadcast license.

Minimal Script: First, I would like to thank Chairman Pai for helping to stop the Sinclair/Tribune merger. In addition, because of Sinclair’s criminally unethical behavior during the negotiations, now is the time for the FCC to stand up and revoke Sinclair’s license to broadcast.

Tues 7/10: “This is extremely dangerous to our democracy”, says Sinclair Broadcast Group, the actual danger to our democracy. Deadline to comment, June 12th, Thursday + 2 calls.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Sinclair Broadcasting Group issue, they are the right-wing extremist company that is gobbling up local news stations. They cut a deal with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner during the 2016 elections to air “good” coverage for Trump and it continues to act as his defacto propaganda arm. You may have seen the  success of their takeovers displayed on this viral video.

Thurs 6/7: Could Pai be clearer that his FCC is open for business to far-right and corporate interests? – 2 urgent actions!

Net neutrality rules will officially expire June 11th. (Monday) Act today!

On December 14th, 2017, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to reverse 2015 regulations established to protect net neutrality.  If we don’t stop it, all  providers will be required to do is “tell consumers whether they will block or slow content or offer paid ‘fast lanes.'” Comforting.

On 5/16, the Senate passed S.J. Res 52, the resolution to overturn the FCC net neutrality rollback. Republican Senators Collins (ME), Kennedy (LA), and Murkowski (AK) joined all 49 Senators in the Democratic Caucus in voting “Yes”. The resolution then moved to the House, where, two days later, Rep. Mike Doyle (D-PA) has filed a discharge petition to force a vote in the House on the Senate-passed resolution. A simple majority of House members must sign the petition.

We’re running out of time. June 11th is the deadline

Check out where your legislator stands here and send them a “thank-you” or a “WTH?” tweet with the attached links. (The list alphabetizes by first name or by state.) Then find the links to all your out-of-state relatives and friends and ask them to do the same thing. Be Indivisible all over the country. For more impact, call everyone who is a “U” (undecided, my foot) or a “N“.

Minimal Script for “U” and “N” Reps: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep. [___] to show support for the Senate-passed S.J. Res 52 by signing the discharge petition introduced by Rep. Mike Doyle. I will remember how you vote on this at the next election.

4/5 – “This is extremely dangerous to our democracy”, says the danger to our democracy.

Still photo of video showing multiple Sinclair Stations repeating the same required propaganda. If you haven’t see it yet, click  here.

A brief history:

Sinclair Broadcasting is the media group that Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner cut a deal with during the 2016 elections to air “good” coverage for Trump and it continues to act as his defacto propaganda arm, like this glowing review of Anthony Scaramucchi’s “new approach” and “fresh perspective” for Trump’s White House.

It requires “must-run” right-wing segments on things like “fake news” from other stations and “terror alerts” when there is none.  Now, Trump, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, and the FCC are easing a law that prevents a single broadcaster from reaching more than 40% of the country’s population—reinstating a loophole that the Obama administration had gotten rid of—so that this hard-right propagandist could broadcast to well over 70% of the country.

In California,  Sinclair curently owns stations in Bakersfield, Chico, Redding, Eureka, Arcata, Fresno and Visalia in CA. Merging with Tribune Broadcasting would give them 42 more stations, including KTLA-5 in Los Angeles, KTXL-Fox40 in Sacramento and KSWB-Fox 5 in San Diego in CA, as well as two national stations, Antenna TV and This TV.

Actions – General:

In order to maintain free and independent media, a concerned citizen has created a Google Drive folder with step-by-step instructions on how we can take a multi-pronged approach to fight back against Sinclair. (full campaign). Here are actions in order of difficulty. Everybody can do Actions #1 thru 3. Go as far down the list as you can. This will take a couple of days.

Wildcard Wednesday 2/7 – 4 fast actions on DACA, a racist judge, Sinclair & the Internet.

Whether your legislator is red or blue, FLOOD their lines today!

In addition to our regularly scheduled calls on media issues today, we’d like you to make two other calls, even if you’ve made them before.

#1 – DACA

Their time is running out.
The CR budget running out tomorrow night and Congress’ willingness to forge a bipartisan DACA bill. However, the president remains a moving target and now insists that he’d love a government shutdown if an immigration deal does not “get rid of these loopholes where killers are allowed to come into our country”.  Of course, actual research shows the opposite. Let’s tell our MoCs that we expect them to vote for and put forward a clean DACA bill.

Minimal Script: Hi. I’m calling from [zip code] to thank Rep./Sen [name] for supporting the Dream Act (H.R. 3440/S.1615), family unification, and to demand no funding for a wasteful wall or surplus border staffing.

Call Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779
or Rep. Salud Carbajal: (CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348

AND Call Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

and Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884

#2 – NO on Farr

If you don’t think Sinclair Broadcasting is a threat to what is good in America, think again…

Yesterday, Trump quoted the right-wing Sinclair Broadcasting host Sharyl Attkisson kicking Puerto Rico while it’s down. But unlike Ms. Attkisson, he has the power to actually hurt people.

Or allow them to die.

And so do we if we continue to vote for people like him.

10:13:1

10:13:2

10:13:3

Obviously, our President is just as susceptible to right-wing hate-speak overwhelming his common sense and compassion as anyone else. That’s why we’re re-running this column from August on the dangers of Sinclair Broadcasting taking over a majority of local news stations and poisoning the good out of a increasingly larger audience.

If you called about this before…. call again. Continue reading “If you don’t think Sinclair Broadcasting is a threat to what is good in America, think again…”

Fire FCC Chairman Ajit Pai

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to tell Sen. [___] to vote “NO” on reconfirming Ajit Pai.

More script if you want it: He’s supposed to protect the public interest, but he continuously sides with  deep-pocketed corporations — like Verizon, his former employer.

If you’re on a roll: He’s trying to destroy Net Neutrality protection and the Lifeline program that helps needy communities. He’s also helping the hard-right media giant Sinclair Broadcasting gain an unprecedented number of local TV stations to broadcast their racist and anti-muslim diatribes.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

AND Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884
