As Senator Murkowski said, “She did not come to Washington to hurt people.” Let’s thank her.

Thanks to three Republican women senators, Obamacare might just survive the GOP’s campaign to repeal it. The fight is not over, so keep calling our own senators with words of encouragement in this fight, but let’s thank these women for their courage to stand up against their own party and for wanting to see something better for their constituents and the rest of us.

Healthcare Whiplash Wednesday thru Friday – Just keep calling…(Update)

Update 7/21: 

Like the Monty Python skit, the GOP Senate health care effort is not dead yet.

There are many confusing options and money being thrown on the table and there is a tremendous amount of pressure without regard to human life and economic impact.

The GOP would like us to be quiet now but we cannot be.

Trump does not want Congress to leave for August recess until a bill is passed.

They couldn’t come up with a good bill in seven years; a few weeks will not be the charm.

As Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz tweeted: “Under-appreciated in 2017 is the biggest grassroots movement in human history just formed w/no politician in charge. Power to the people.”

We are those people!

Please keep up the pressure with your Senators!

Remember, McConnell is still insisting on a vote next week on repealing the Affordable Care Act, even though he doesn’t have the votes to pass it—apparently because he wants to be able to say he tried before moving on to tax cuts for billionaires. We need to make absolutely sure that vote goes down in flames. But even after that, even if Republicans can’t repeal it legislatively, Trump will keep trying to sabotage it through executive action. And Trump’s budget calls for hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid. We still have to resist with all our might.

And it’s also time to look ahead. We must hold accountable everyone who voted for this hideous bill or came close to supporting it—and prepare to throw dozens of Republicans out of Congress next fall. And it’s time to rally Democrats in support of the visionary step forward that America still desperately needs: Medicare for All. “

Today – Wednesday! Learn how to help create new Americans (& new voters!)…

Screen Shot 2017-06-16 at 5.37.36 PMI’ve been to a lot of lectures in my life, but this one, given by our local immigration lawyer, Vanessa Frank, on how someone becomes a citizen of our country, was absolutely fascinating. You cannot come out of it without a new sense of respect for all those people you see at citizenship swearing-in ceremonies.

Learning how to help immigrants fill out the N400 Citizenship Application form is, in itself, a civics lesson, a history lesson and a profound insight into the human journey that ends with the privilege of calling oneself an “American”.  Continue reading “Today – Wednesday! Congress wants to party like it’s 2008 — say “no thanks” to weakening Banking Protections!

The new House Financial Services spending bill makes sweeping changes to the financial regulatory system by revising the protections that were put in place after the 2008-2009 economic crash. It sneaks in parts of the odious and misleading HR 10- “Financial Choice Act” to control and weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Financial Stability Oversight Council, and the SEC regulations that prevent commercial banks from trading for their own gain.

[____] to oppose the Financial Services 2018 spending bill’s funding changes and new enforcement limitations on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and other banking regulators. Dodd-Frank was put into place to prevent another recession and to protect us from predatory financial practices.

How many Russians were in that meeting? Pull Jared’s Security Clearance.

Until we know more about Jared Kushner’s friends, the Senate intelligence committee should ask to have his security clearance revoked. To get top secret clearance, Kushner had to list all meetings with foreign contacts over the last seven years. Kushner has updated this information not once, not twice, but three times. He’s suddenly recalled more than 100 foreign contacts. His bad memory and his private business problems leaves him open to “kompromat” and the US vulnerable to hostile actors.

Script: I’m calling to express my serious concern about Jared Kushner’s failure to disclose meetings with foreign officials and his clear knowledge of the Russian government’s effort to help the Trump campaign in June of 2016. Because of his repeated dishonesty, his national security clearance must be immediately revoked.

Save the Endangered Species Act! Congress is considering multiple bills on July 19th – including one from Senator Rand Paul – that would gut the Endangered Species Act and put countless species at risk of extinction. These bills allow decisions on the fate of endangered species to be made by local politicians, not scientists. Call to stop these cynical attempts to destroy the Endangered Species Act.

Demand that Congress oversees Russia Sanctions, not Trump!

The Senate’s bipartisan bill (S.722) on sanctions for Russia and Iran heads to the House. The bill codifies the Obama sanctions, beefs up sanctions on cyber activity and weapons sales, and adds new sanctions for human rights violations. Critically, it gives Congress, not Trump’s administration, the right to review and reject any lifting of sanctions against Russia.

Script:  I’m calling to urge Representative […] to support the efforts to enforce Congressional oversight for any lifting of sanctions against Russia and Iran.  It’s clear that we cannot trust the Trump administration to do the right thing.
