We need everyone to vote. If you’ve been waiting on the sidelines, it’s time to join in to make this happen.

The GOP is a minority party. The only way they can stay in charge of a huge populace who disagrees with their policies is by cheating and voter suppression, including repressive laws and divisive social media campaigns, the latter aided by their Russian allies. The 2016 election was close enough to allow the Electoral College system to take it away from the majority for the second time in the last five elections. We won’t be able to fix the iniquities of this system before the November election, so let’s focus on what we can do. What we need is a landslide. What we need is the 91 million voters. What we need to do is wake the sleeping giant amongst us. Today we are concentrating on just two strategies.

Tues 2/4: Not a trial. Not an acquittal. Not America.

Keep our eyes on the prize – removal of those who don’t deserve to represent America!

Republican Senators have refused to call witnesses for a fair trial– even though a large majority of Americans want to see witnesses testify. At this moment, it is important to make our voices heard. As the final vote in the Senate trial is scheduled to happen Wednesday, Feb. 5th, on that afternoon, hundreds of thousands of Americans will mobilize with a simple demand: Reject the Cover-Up.

Historian Heather Cox Richardson wrote “People are saying this is the end for American democracy, but I see the opposite…” and read her great essay here on how the GOP just jumped the shark.

Action #1 – Sign up to text voters for the Payback Project.

Action #3 – Join a Reject the Cover-Up event near you.

Our “leaders” take their cue from us: If they do brave things, it’s because they know we have their backs. So it’s up to us to mobilize like never before — and ensure that this dark moment in our nation’s history is followed by an unprecedented level of civic action.

Fri 1/31: Last time the Social Security pulled this wicked stunt, over 20,000 people died. Trump wants to do it again. Comment tonight by 11:59 pm EST!

The last time this policy was implemented, 21,176 people died. Stop this now!

Trump is becoming bolder about doing things that kill people, either to pay back his biggest lobbyists, distract from his impeachment woes, or to prove his bonafides in the trickle-down war on the poor.

His administration now wants to recreate a 1980’s policy from the Reagan era that resulted in 200,000 Americans losing their earned Social Security disability benefits and 21,176 deaths. Several people committed suicide after being told they no longer qualified for benefits and Medal of Honor winner and Vietnam war hero Roy Benavidez was told to get a job, despite war injuries that left him with severe pain and shrapnel in his heart.

After massive public outcry, that policy was reversed, but now the administration is proposing a similar rule, which increases the frequency of eligibility reviews in an attempt to rip benefits away from hundreds of thousands of Americans with disabilities, especially adults nearing retirement and children.

So we say…Why wait to howl until AFTER people die? Let’s do it NOW!

Alan Dersowitz stated yesterday that extortion is fine if you’re doing it to get reelected.

“As the Senate moves toward pivotal votes on witnesses and the articles of impeachment, Republican senators who decide that Donald Trump’s shakedown of Ukraine was sleazy, but not worth removing him from office, still have a problem. They risk angering a president who insists his actions were “perfect” and beyond reproach.

In the face of a such a dilemma, senators were offered an escape hatch this week by Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz: Don’t worry about what Trump did, Dershowitz assured the senators. You can tell your constituents that if the president didn’t commit a crime, he can’t be impeached and removed from office.” (USA Today)

However, Dershowitz is wrong, according to real constitutional scholars who are not political shills, as well as to Nikolas Bowie, the person he misquotes in his arguments.

What does this leave us with? A president who has reconfigured his Article II power to allow him to freely fire anyone he hates, build anything he wants, assassinate anyone who pisses him off, withhold any of the congressionally appropriated aid he likes, and recall any foreign ambassadors, even for corrupt reasons, or as he put it – “to “do whatever I want as president.” He might as well have said “I am now king.”

Add “ I NEVER told John Bolton!” to your collection of Trumpian nonsense, right next to “READ THE TRANSCRIPTS!” and “PERFECT CALL!” .

Bolton’s book “The Room Where It Happened”, has been marrooned in the White House since December, waiting for a “classified information review” that may never happen. However, a leak has occurred…the book reportedly states that Trump did exactly what we already know he did, that Attorney General William P. Barr and acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney enabled him, and that “Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged privately that there was no basis to claims by the president’s lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani that the ambassador to Ukraine was corrupt and believed Mr. Giuliani may have been acting on behalf of other clients.”

Meanwhile, reports from CBS news claim that GOP Senators have received strict warnings not to vote against Trump, “or your head will be held on a pike,” a phrase that so offended the delicate sensibilities of the GOP, that they’ve retreated to their fainting couches and are threatening to vote for Trump because of it, no matter what evidence says.

Mon 1/27: John Bolton is ready to rumble. Get that man a subpoena!

Action #1 – Email/Call your legislators and Chief Justice Roberts!

Add “ I NEVER told John Bolton!” to “READ THE TRANSCRIPTS!” and “PERFECT CALL!” in your collection of Trumpian nonsense.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., who is presiding over the Senate trial, “can easily subpoena these folks on his own,” and he “can’t even be overruled by Republicans in the Senate.“, according to Neal Katyal, a former acting solicitor general. Parts of the 1868 Senate rules of impeachment, still in force, give the chief justice the power to issue subpoenas without being overruled by the Senate. Once a subpoenaed witness is deposed, and only then, the Senate has the final say on whether the witness also testifies, according to this op-ed. OK, then.

Ask Chief Justice Roberts and your legislators to call for Bolton to testify!

Although Sen. Mitch McConnell pretends his sham of a trial is equivalent to the Clinton trial, that administration actually turned over more than 90,000 pages of documents for congressional inspection, and witnesses testified both during the Starr investigation and at the trial. The Trump administration only revealed call transcripts after the the whistleblower’s report forced them to. Trump then ignored subpoenas and forbade individuals to respond to them and now he’s openly admitted to withholding evidence at the World Economic Forum. Only a senator deeply complicit with the authoritarian regime Trump is forming would refuse to call this “obstruction of congress”.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator [___] to remind [his/her] GOP colleagues that we, the vast majority of Americans, want a fair trial with testimony from all the relevant witnesses. We want them to be impartial jurors who are paying attention, not wandering around like cats. This is the bare minimum we expect from those to whom we pay with our taxes, from those who say they are our public servants, from those who’ve taken an oath to uphold “impartial justice” at this trial, and from those who’ve sworn to “support and defend the Constitution,” including from enemies without and authoritarian threats from within.
