Fri 1/31: Last time the Social Security pulled this wicked stunt, over 20,000 people died. Trump wants to do it again. Comment tonight by 11:59 pm EST!

The last time this policy was implemented, 21,176 people died. Stop this now!

Trump is becoming bolder about doing things that kill people, either to pay back his biggest lobbyists, distract from his impeachment woes, or to prove his bonafides in the trickle-down war on the poor.

His administration now wants to recreate a 1980’s policy from the Reagan era that resulted in 200,000 Americans losing their earned Social Security disability benefits and 21,176 deaths. Several people committed suicide after being told they no longer qualified for benefits and Medal of Honor winner and Vietnam war hero Roy Benavidez was told to get a job, despite war injuries that left him with severe pain and shrapnel in his heart.

After massive public outcry, that policy was reversed, but now the administration is proposing a similar rule, which increases the frequency of eligibility reviews in an attempt to rip benefits away from hundreds of thousands of Americans with disabilities, especially adults nearing retirement and children.

So we say…Why wait to howl until AFTER people die? Let’s do it NOW!

While Social Security is best known as a retirement program, disability and survivors benefits are equally essential. That’s why we’re rallying our allies across the country to fight back against this proposed rule change and save the lives of thousands of Americans.  Continue reading “Fri 1/31: Last time the Social Security pulled this wicked stunt, over 20,000 people died. Tues 6/4: H.R. 1/S.949 – “For the People Act” is a litmus test for corruption. Ask your senators to stand up and fight for a country to be proud of.

Video and top graphic from equalcitizens.us

Today’s action on protecting our right to vote is to ask our Senators to push through H.R.1/ S.949,  historic bills to strengthen democracy. H.R.1 passed the House on March 8th, on a 234-193 vote. Now the Senate version – S.949, is in the Senate and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a shamelessly partisan operative, has vowed to stop it, calling it radical” and “socialist“. This would be a surprise to the non-partisan League of Women Voters, who’ve endorsed H.R.1 as “an important step forward in repairing our broken political system and our destructive campaign finance system.”

These bills will:

  • Change the way campaigns get funded
  • End partisan gerrymandering
  • Establish automatic voter registration
  • Restore the Voting Rights Act
  • Impose strong new ethics rules on members of Congress.

Action – Call your senator and remind them that we want this brought to the Senate floor now.

All the Democratic senators have already signed on. Get your family and friends in red states to pick up their phones too. We need GOP senators to get this done.

Minimal Script for Democratic Senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want to thank Sen. [___]  for [his/her] support of S.949 and to tell Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that his constituents aren’t accepting corruption-as-usual nonsense anymore and to bring S.949 – “For the People Act” to the floor for a vote.

Thurs – 3/7: Dear Senator McConnell… America is waiting for H.R.l. (Call your senators!)

Action – Call your senator and tell them that we don’t accept McConnell’s edict.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Sen. [___] to tell Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that your constituents aren’t accepting corruption-as-usual nonsense anymore and to bring H.R. 1 to the floor for a vote.

Come on, Senator McConnell…

We’ve written some of the big points so a 5th grader could explain them to you. Tell us why you won’t bring the anti-corruption bill that America is waiting for to a vote.
If you want more “grownup” references, here’s a quick overview of H.R.1, an easy-to-read section-by-section breakdown and the bill’s full text.
Link to McConnell’s statements here.

(Here are its supporters in the House. If your rep. isn’t listed, call them along with your senators. Contact information for legislators at the bottom. Thank Carbajal and Brownley for being cosponsors!)

Action #1 – “NO” on S.2155 – Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act”

From Indivisible: “The week of March 5, the Senate is expected to vote on S. 2155, the deceptively named “Economic Growth, Regulary Relief and Consumer Protection Act”. This bill guts key portions of the Dodd-Frank Act and would shield25 of the world’s 38 biggest banks, such as Deutsche Bank and Santander from regulation and roll back key consumer protections. Indivisible has put out an explainer page here. Here are the basic points.

  • The bill puts us at risk of another crisis. It raises the oversight threshold from $50 billion to $250 billion, exempting 25 of the 38 biggest banks, many of whom received TARP bailout money, from regulation.
  • It allow racial discrimination in mortgage lending to go unchecked
  • It erodes critical consumer protections
  • It started with good intentions to help community banks and consumers, but then lost its way as it was altered to help giants continue their unethical practices..

Check out if your Senator (12 Democrats signed on) got caught up in this here. Continue reading “Friday – 3/2 – They’re coming for everything…”

Wednesday 2/14 – Protect Elections and the ADA.

“We saw a targeting of 21 states and an exceptionally small number of them were actually successfully penetrated.” – nbc news

Wait a minute…what?

#1 – Support the DETER Act: Defend Our Elections from Foreign Interference

With the 2018 midterm elections only 9 months away, it is urgent that stronger security measures are put in place to protect the integrity of our elections from foreign interference. The DETER Act (Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines Act) (S. 2313/ HR 4884) will require monitoring, reporting, and imposing of severe penalties and sanctions on foreign governments that engage in actions interfering in our elections.

Action: Call your rep. (HR 4884) and both senators (S. 2313). How-to-call information at bottom.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask that Rep./Sen. [___]  co-sponsor the bipartisan DETER Act (HR 4884,S. 2313).
