The Senate can, and must, block this terrible nominee and pass a bill that protects Social Security by making the wealthy begin paying their fair share into the program! (Separate post on that bill here.) Please call your Senators and tell them to vote “NO” on libertarian extremist Andrew G. Biggs.
Minimal script for senators: I’m calling from (zip code) and I want Senator [___] to vote “NO” on confirming Andrew Biggs to the Social Security Advisory Board. In addition, I want [him/her/them] to prioritize passing S.3071 “Social Security 2100 Act – A Sacred Trust.” Why hasn’t this fundamental bill protecting the retirement and dignity of millions of Americans against the predations of Biggs and the GOP been passed yet?
A lot of Democratic senators fell for this scam last time! Take nothing for granted. Tell them – “NO” on this GOP-swindle and “YES” for a real solution – “Social Security 2100 Act – A Sacred Trust.”
Sen. Feinstein joined over 20 other Democratic senators in voting for Romney’s TRUST Act last time it was up. Perhaps they did not appreciate then how it would fundamentally weaken Social Security and Medicare, allowing cuts to benefits without regard to how they would affect their constituents who depend on them. But…it’s a GOP bill. The rich are always protected and the poor and middle-class are left to pay the check. Seriously – THEY SHOULD HAVE FIGURED THIS OUT BY NOW!
What we need isH.R.5723/S.3071 “Social Security 2100 Act – A Sacred Trust.” This legislation adjusts the payroll wage cap so that the wealthy begin paying their fair share into the program. They also includes a 2 percent across the board increase in benefits and a more accurate inflation formula for calculating cost-of-living adjustments.
Action: Tell your legislators to vote “NO” on Romney’s Trojan Horse TRUST Act (H.R.2572/S.1295) and “YES” on H.R.5723/S.3071 – Social Security 2100 Act – A Sacred Trust.”
Seriously. A lot of Democratic senators fell for this!
Minimal script for senators who voted FOR the Trust Act amendment in the 2021 budget: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [Feinstein] to make sure that Sen. Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act, which could endanger Social Security, is NOT included in the final COVID relief bill. Sen. [Feinstein] voted for this amendment to the 2021 budget. Perhaps [he/she] did not appreciate how it would circumvent legislative norms for changing Social Security and would allow cuts to be made to benefits without regard to how they would affect [his/her] constituents who depend on them.
Minimal script for senators who voted AGAINST the Trust Act amendment in the 2021 budget:: I’m calling from [zip code] to thank Sen. [Padilla] for voting against Sen. Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act, as an amendment to the 2021 budget, and to ask him to speak out against it being included in the COVID relief bill. This malicious amendment could endanger Social Security by allowing cuts to be made to benefits without regard to their human impact.
The amendment was voted into the Fiscal Year 2021 Budget as S. Amdt. 803 to S. Con. Res. 5. Senator Feinstein voted “YES” and Senator Padilla voted “NO“. Find your own senator’s vote here.
Note: If you haven’t made this call yet on adding unemployment tax relief and automatic stabilizers to the American Rescue Plan, do it at the same time.
His administration now wants to recreate a 1980’s policy from the Reagan era that resulted in 200,000 Americans losing their earned Social Security disability benefits and 21,176 deaths. Several people committed suicide after being told they no longer qualified for benefits and Medal of Honor winner and Vietnam war hero Roy Benavidez was told to get a job, despite war injuries that left him with severe pain and shrapnel in his heart.
After massive public outcry, that policy was reversed, but now the administration is proposing a similar rule, which increases the frequency of eligibility reviews in an attempt to rip benefits away from hundreds of thousands of Americans with disabilities, especially adults nearing retirement and children.
So we say…Why wait to howl until AFTER people die? Let’s do it NOW!
If you missed yesterday’s positive actions: legislatively protecting Title IX, getting government contractors back pay and stopping these destructive and expensive #TrumpShutdowns…go here. Or do them again!
Action #1 – Take back Bears Ears!
(From Jim Hines, Team Member, Sierra Club Protect Wild Utah Team)
Greetings Public Lands Activists:
Now is our chance…our legislation to restore the beautiful landscape and natural ecosystems of Bears Ears National Monument in southern Utah has just been introduced into the U.S. Hose of Representatives by our great legislative friends Congressman Gallego (D-AZ) and Congresswoman Haaland (D-NM).
HR 871 would expand the current national monument from 200,000 acres to the original designation of 1.9 million acres. After several years of hard work we were able to have President Obama designate and protect the lands of Bears Ears NM in 2019, then in 2017 President Trump reduced the size of the national monument to its present size.
