Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News! – The “Holding Hands” Edition

As soon as I read this story…I knew that I wasn’t alone in thinking how inspirational this was. Alison & Stephanie connected it to this amazing essay from Rebecca Solnit comparing the conservative ideology of isolation to the reality of our communion with each other and the world:
“The modern right may wish that every man were an island, entire of himself, but no one is wholly independent. You can’t survive without taking air into your lungs, you didn’t give birth to or raise yourself, you won’t bury yourself, and in between you won’t produce most of the goods and services you depend on to live. Your gut is full of microorganisms, without which you could not digest all the plants and animals, likely grown by other people, on which you rely to survive. We are nodes on intricate systems, synapses snapping on a great collective brain; we are in it together, for better or worse.”

So in honor of these awesome people who held hands to help strangers, let’s start with news from states where aid and respect was extended to others… Continue reading “Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News! – The “Holding Hands” Edition”

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News! – The Real 4th of July Edition

This kind of makes me cry. This is what makes all of our resistance efforts worthwhile. This is what makes it imperative that we continue. These kids know what is right. We owe it to them to keep fighting the cancer of hatred and fear that is spreading through our society. We owe it to them to keep fighting the dark-money forces that are entrenched in every branch of government. Let this be a real 4th of July, where we celebrate the true gifts that America promises. Then, go out and protest, because that’s how we keep them.

We still have a long way to go…

It’s decision time for hundreds of pieces of legislation in California this week. Make some calls!

The Senate’s fiscal committee will decide the fate of bills on Thursday, June 1st; the Assembly will do so on Friday, June 2nd.  The ones that pass will then move to the opposite house.

With our strong Democratic majority, California has the ability to counter some of the negative policies coming out of Washington D.C. Our friends at Indivisible San Francisco short-listed some of the most important bills. If you have time this week, please pick the ones that speak the most to you, and make some phone calls.

State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Assemblywoman Monique Limon don’t receive many calls from their constituents, so if we all make our voices heard this week, we can make a real difference.

CALL TO STATE ACTION

TUESDAY 5/30 – FRIDAY 6/2
Pick your favorite bills from the list ISF has put together and let our state MoCs know how you feel.

Assembly: Call State Assembly Member Monique Limón: Sacramento: (916) 319-2037, Santa Barbara: (805) 564-1649, Ventura: (805) 641-3700 If outside of these areas, find your Representatives here.

Call to State Action – “Yes” on the Healthy California Act (SB 562)

No matter what devastation Trump and the GOP manage to do to Obamacare, the Healthy California Act (SB 562) will protect the health of all Californians. A state funded single payer system will provide universal coverage and choice of licensed health professionals and services to everyone living in California. It’s time CA’s healthcare joined the rest of the advanced nations.

Script: “I’m calling today to ask you to support Senate Bill 562 “Californians For A Healthy California.” I’m asking that you stand up and help California take the lead in creating a comprehensive universal single-payer health coverage program. Please vote for healthcare as a basic human right for all Californians.”

Call: Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson: SAC (916) 651-4019, SB (805) 965-0862, OX (805)988-1940

This Week In Resistance – “The Not-so-Innocents Abroad” Edition

In what universe did Jared think setting up a backchannel to the Russians was OK?

“Frequently, people who go along a treasonous path do not know they are on a treasonous path until it is too late”  – Former CIA Director, John Brennan testifying at House Intelligence Committee

Trump traveled to far-away places, and stuff still happened here…

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-saving Good News: Wonder Women Unleash Their Lassos of Truth Edition!

Women dominated the resistance news cycle this week – Wonder Women Unite! But first, some crazy-good news…

Former FBI director Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. To everyone who protested or called their member of Congress to demand an investigation: You helped make this happen! Indivisible Ventura hammered this issue from every angle we could think of  – 22 calls to action – and your calls made a difference!

Single payer health care is closer to becoming law in New York and California than ever before but if we want it, everyone is going to have to ask for it. Tell Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson that you care about SB562:  SAC (916) 651-4019, SB  (805) 965-0862, (805) 988-1940 See the full call to action here.

These guys are ROCKSTARS! The ACLU took legal action to force Trump to produce evidence of voter fraud claims. How many executive orders have lawsuits against them? We’ve kinda lost count.

Public support for gay marriage has reached a new high.

Wonder Women Unleash Their Lassos of Truth!

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day.  42 years before it became an official holiday filled with roses, chocolate and Kodak moments, it was something quite differentand we can be proud to say that women have risen again to resist.

Tell the EPA that you like the Clean Air Act. Don’t rollback 50 years of environment victories!

We have a brand new type of action this week, one that we’ve been working on behind the scenes for a while now. It will take place for the next two weeks, until May 15, and we hope for your fervent participation.

The Environmental Protection Agency has issued a request for comments about regulations. They expect the comments to focus on why regulations are bad for someone’s bottom line.

Let’s prove them wrong.

We’d like you to go to the EPA comment page, and voice your support for EPA regulations. We are providing some sample scripts to inspire you, but ask that you make your comments with your own words, and in your own voice. They are on the lookout for identical comments that appear to come from mass mailings.

To keep things as simple as possible, we’re going to ask you to comment on specific types of regulations throughout the next two weeks. We’ll start with the Clean Air Act, which is of critical importance to California, and will subsequently focus on clean water, pollutants, etc.

Tell the EPA that you like the Clean Air Act, and remind the EPA that throughout their nearly 50 years, they have had a lot of environmental victories.

Here’s a sample script/inspiration document that we at Indivisible have put together: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qGumuye1NZGY4AK13dabAbdfvQL9sO1vOpzChft1v8o/edit?usp=sharing

Stand in Solidarity on May Day: Vote Yes on California Sanctuary State Bill!

Local California law enforcement must not cooperate with draconian ICE roundups. Resist the Trump agenda, California style.  This is a human rights crisis and we need to participate.

Call State Assembly Member Monique Limón (representing Santa Barbara, Ventura, Oxnard): Sacramento: (916) 319-2037, Santa Barbara: (805) 564-1649, Ventura: (805) 641-3700

If outside of these areas, find your Representatives here.

Script: I’m  a constituent of Monique Limón, whom I’m calling to vote yes on S.B. 54. State resources should not be used to assist federal authorities in tracking, rounding up and deporting our law-abiding and non-violent immigrant neighbors or separating parents from their children. Thank you!

Important! Monique Limon’s office has gotten more “NO” than “YES” calls for this bill!  Please call or email Monique Limon today!
