We can no longer pretend that voting doesn’t matter…

It’s pretty clear we’re not going to be changing any of Trump’s hard-core supporters. The only way we’re going to win elections and protect gains we’ve made in civil rights is through finding new voters and energizing those who’ve already registered but rarely, if ever, vote.

The good news! – There are way more of us than the MAGA-hat tribe.

What we need to work on – We just don’t show up in high enough numbers.

The stakes are really high now.

We can see our protections being eroded by the current administration. It’s affecting every aspect of our lives and much that we hold dear. Environmental protections, civil worker, immigration, women’s and LGBTQ rights, and access to healthcare and education, are all in the process of being diminished.

What we may not be aware of is that we’re one state away from a constitutional convention, something right-wing groups will been waiting for a long time.  This would allow them to fundamentally change our constitution by amendment. 10-minute Fun-Pak of Voting & Equal Rights Actions. Get ready for the March!

Women line up to vote for the first time in New York after the passage of the 19th Amendment, New York, New York, 1920.

On Saturday 8/26, join in the Indivisible March on Los Angeles, both to celebrate the 97th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote, and to show that we’re willing to stand up to “the most openly misogynist, regressive, bigoted, corrupt and dangerous administration in United States history” as well.

So today, we thought we’d put together some quick actions in honor of equal rights and voting. If you don’t have your phone optimized for fast calling yet, do that first.

We recommend that you CALL legislators that haven’t supported a bill yet and EMAIL to thank those who have. “Thank you” emails are encouraging to our legislators without tying up phone lines needed for action calls.

Call or thank? We’ve put in our legislators in the examples below. Not sure whether or not yours has signed up to sponsor something? Go to Congress.gov. Type in the bill # in the search function, hit the “Co-sponsors” tab. Sorting by “Alphabetical – by name” makes finding them easy.

Representative/Senator Contacts are listed at the bottom of this post.

Action #1 – Extend the deadline of the ERA. (H.J.Res 53 / S.J.Res 5)

Yes on AB 249. NO to dark money!

More than $1 billion was spent on California campaigns in the last two elections, much of it hiding behind misleading names. It’s corrupting our democracy. AB 249, the California DISCLOSE Act, forces ballot measure ads and SuperPAC attack ads to show their true funders. Right now it has stalled in the Senate. Call to get it moving.

Script: I’m calling to tell Senator Jackson to vote “YES” on AB 249. We voters need fair and accurate information about the sponsors of the barrage of political advertising we face.

Call Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson: SAC (916) 651-4019, SB (805) 965-0862, OX (805)988-1940

NO on HR. 2090 “Election Integrity”Act. Yet another suppression bill that will disenfranchise millions of voters!

H.R. 2090 is a “solution” in search of a problem. Instead of requiring photo ID’s to discourage minorities and the poor from voting, Congress should invest in in updating and securing our nation’s voting systems. Voter ID laws only serve to marginalize already marginalized communities. Making it harder for US citizens to vote is un-American.

Script: I’m calling Rep (____) to vote NO on H.R. 2090, the Election Integrity Act. Some Americans can’t afford two hours off work to get to a distant center to get a photo ID. This law amounts to a poll tax penalizing the poorest Americans.

Call Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

Yes on SB 149. No Tax Returns? No space on the California ballot. SAD!

Legislation to require presidential candidates to disclose their last 5 years of tax returns in order to gain a spot on California’s presidential primary ballot passed the CA Senate. Now we need to get the Assembly to pass it too. Where we go, others will follow. This is one way to make sure we know who our candidates for President are working for.

Script: I’m calling to tell Assemblyperson [____] to him/her to vote YES on SB 149. Candidates must show their tax returns – we have a right to know who our candidates for president are working for!

Call Monique Limón: (CA-37): SAC (916) 319-2037, SB (805) 564-1649, VTA (805) 641-3700
