“What do you say to people who might be tired of protesting, tired of calling?”

171208153808-plane-argument-2-large-169“First of all, I hear you brother, I hear you, sister. It is devastating. the attacks every week on black people, on brown people, on all of us, on workers, – it’s exhausting and humiliating and it undermines your confidence in the country and your core values.

And so the first thing you have to do is acknowledge the pain and own it and be at peace with it. And then you have to say, you know what, in the face of that I will fight. Right? Because the struggles that are in front of me are in fact, they’re big, I mean whether it’s you, or me or anyone else. We have real struggles. But other people have had hard struggles in their lives and they’ve persevered. You know, a lot of people, throughout human history, have had shitty lives with major obstacles and they’ve fought hard. I mean, think about refugees in Syria.

So what we’ve got here is less difficult than that. We have a functioning democracy, we still have the ability to raise our voices, we have to do it we have to persevere, we have to put a little  self-sacrifice in. The democracy doesn’t work if we hand it off to K Street, if we let the monied interest do their work, then of course the Republicans will do the bidding and the Democrats will fold like playing cards. Join us for a Alabama Senate Race Postcard Party!

We will be joining a national effort to help elect Doug Jones of Alabama to the US Senate. The election is on Dec 12, so we need to get to cracking and take one more step to getting a majority back in the Senate!

Our appeal will be directly to the voters in Alabama – NOT mass political mailings, because all of our cards will be handwritten. Each will be a message from one voter to another. We are simply asking Alabamans to do that most American thing — VOTE!

Join a party in Ventura at one of the times below so we can have fun while writing and personalizing the cards.

Please pick a day from the list below, and let us know when you would like to join.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO RSVP to Ruth at jeruth51@aol.com (RSVP and we’ll send you the address!):

Knowledge is key to understanding the options we have for moving forward toward the best healthcare our nation can deliver. Our aim is to learn about these options and share this knowledge into our communities.

Our line-up of incredible speakers (bios below):
Dr. Josephine Soliz will make the case that we as a country spend more money on poorer care on a smaller percentage of our population than all the other developed countries that have figured out, better than we have, how to provide health insurance and thus access to healthcare to 100% of their population.
Dr. Minako Watabe will present the case for universal access to health insurance from the patient harm perspective.
Dr. Clint McBride will key us in about single payer healthcare/insurance.
Michael Williams, Director of Grey Law of Ventura County will speak of the dangers to citizens currently on Medicare and Medi-Cal if the proposed changes to Obamacare are implemented.
Héctor Hernández-Delgado, Staff Attorney for National Health Law Program will give us an overview of our existing healthcare model, touching on single payer and legal implications/ramifications.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner established a Harvey relief fund at The Greater Houston Community Foundation (https://ghcfdisaster.kimbia.com/hurricaneharveyrelieffund). The organization connects donors with a network of nonprofits and innovative solutions in the social sector.
GlobalGiving (https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/hurricane-harvey-relief-fund/), which calls itself the largest global crowdfunding community, has a goal of raising $2 million for its Harvey relief fund. Funds will be used first for immediate needs of food, water and shelter and then transition to long-term recovery efforts.
United Way of Greater Houston (https://www.unitedwayhouston.org/flood/flood-donation/) has launched a relief fund for storm-related needs and recovery.
