This Week in Resistance – “We have art in order not to die of the truth.”

This wasn’t where I planned to start, but this short video is profound and it moved me to tears…

Malice may attack it,…

Removing the statues = Step 1. The Equal Justice Initiative (eji.org) is working to ensure that we better understand the history of white supremacist violence against black people with a national lynching memorial.  Watch this great interview of the EJI Director Bryan Stevenson and singer songwriter Andra Day on the Daily Show. How to help Houston.

(from NPR) Thanks, Avrom from The Resistance: Peaceful Action for sharing this)
Here’s How You Can Help People Affected By Harvey

General Relief
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner established a Harvey relief fund at The Greater Houston Community Foundation (https://ghcfdisaster.kimbia.com/hurricaneharveyrelieffund). The organization connects donors with a network of nonprofits and innovative solutions in the social sector.
GlobalGiving (https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/hurricane-harvey-relief-fund/), which calls itself the largest global crowdfunding community, has a goal of raising $2 million for its Harvey relief fund. Funds will be used first for immediate needs of food, water and shelter and then transition to long-term recovery efforts.
United Way of Greater Houston (https://www.unitedwayhouston.org/flood/flood-donation/) has launched a relief fund for storm-related needs and recovery. The organization says it already maintains a disaster relief fund but anticipates the needs of Harvey will far exceed those existing resources. Continue reading “How to help Houston.”

Update on our National Monuments from Sierra Club’s Jim Hines – Action Call 8/29

Greetings Friends:

In two weeks I will be on Capitol Hill in DC (third trip this year) to meet with our adversaries in congress who are supporting elimination of many of our national monuments, national parks, national conservation areas and national forests, YOUR national public lands.

I will also be meeting with members of the Trump Administration Dept. of the Interior staff. It is so important to meet with our adversaries on national public lands issues as they are in full control of the process in DC right now.

The Administration and its many allies in congress are now taking a two prong approach to attacking our national public lands.

1) by using the 2018 federal budget process to reduce funding for national public land units the Administration does not feel warrant protections, such as many national monuments, national forests and national conservation areas in the western U.S. and will instead open those lands up to oil and gas drilling, coal and uranium mining, logging and cattle grazing.

2) supporting congressional legislation such as the Public Lands Initiative (PLI) soon to be introduced into congress by congressman Rob Bishop (R-Utah) which would remove all protections for federal lands in the state of Utah. Similar legislation is being drafted for other states in the western U.S. who do not want the U.S. Government owning/managing national parks, national monuments, national conservation areas and national forests.

3) And on top of all of this will be upcoming actions by the President to reduce the size and eliminate protections of many national monuments and other national public land units as well as National Marine Sanctuaries.

We are in an epic battle to save some of the most spectacular landscapes and endangered ecosystems in the United States.

D-Day update on our National Monuments – Thurs 8/24

Greetings Public Lands Activists:
We are starting to get  more details as we talk with the Secretary of the Interior’s office regarding the national monuments Interior Secretary Zinke has recommended be reduced in size to the President today.
As we knew all along the main targets of the national monument review ordered by the President was Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument both in Utah. And that was proven true today. When the President acts those two NM’s will shrink dramatically.
But there is more, many national monument protection rules and regulations will be changed or done away with altogether. Many NM’s will see what the Secretary calls “more appropriate multiple uses”.
The 2018 federal budget will also be used to impact many national monuments and other national public lands in a negative way.
It appears that the Administration will dribble out over a period of time exactly what other NM’s will have boundaries reduced, this hoping to avoid massive public outcry (we will make sure that no matter when, there WILL BE massive public outcry).

Update on our National Monuments from Sierra Club’s Jim Hines – 8/22

Greetings Public Lands Activists:
There is a flurry of activity going on at the U.S. Dept of the Interior right now. In the next few days concluding on Thursday (August 24th) we will see Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke make a number of recommendations to the President of the United States regarding the status of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the American west (and one in Maine) as well as 5 marine national monuments in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Most recommendations have been agreed upon, several more are still being discussed by the executive staff at Interior. According to the draft which was circulated among Interior executive staff last week it looks like we are going to lose around 12 national monuments (either completely eliminated or reduced in size).
We are in a epic struggle for the very heart of America, YOUR national parks, national monuments, national marine sanctuaries, national conservation areas, national wildlife refuges and national forests.

Tuesday 8/15 – We’ve got a little list.

Congress is in “recess”, so some groups are taking rests too. But for those of us who spent the post-election weeks traumatized, 10 minutes a day of actually working to stop his agenda does not seem like a bad deal. It’s a great, useful form of therapy.

So, “Recess, schmeecess”, fellow resisters! Their offices are still open and taking calls. So while many of them are busy hiding from their constituents, let’s give them big call tallies as a “welcome back” present for when they return.

Today we’re putting out a list of environmental issues with proposed actions. Continue reading “Tuesday 8/15 – We’ve got a little list.”

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News! – “Look for the Helpers” Edition

Despite having never having watched Mr. Rogers as a child, a video of him speaking about how his mother taught him to deal with bad things has stuck with me.

And now, I too, look for the helpers when something terrible happens. And there they are. In Charlottesville. The heroes who jumped in to help in the face of imminent danger, the police who came from far away to keep people safe, including the state troopers who died, and the people who work, tirelessly, year-round, to make Virginia an good and more equitable place to live. And the brave resisters, of all types, who stood up for our morals and our values…

…from the woman who died…

This Week in Resistance – “Playing Chicken with Kim” Edition

Best quote: “We sent Dennis Rodman. I can’t believe that didn’t work.”

(Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)  said of the retired American basketball player who has taken several trips to North Korea.)

For the most accurate analysis of what’s happening between Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, we once again turn to our nation’s comedians.

NO on Sam Clovis – yet another climate change denier – and worse! Where does Trump find these people?

Script: I’m calling Senator [Feinstein/Harris] to oppose Sam Clovis to serve as the Department of Agriculture’s top scientist. He is neither a scientist, nor does he accept that climate change is real. He has accused progressives of “enslaving” minorities, and called black leaders “race traders.” He is a purely political appointment with no real qualifications to serve.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430
