Update on our National Monuments from Sierra Club’s Jim Hines – 8/22

Greetings Public Lands Activists:
There is a flurry of activity going on at the U.S. Dept of the Interior right now. In the next few days concluding on Thursday (August 24th) we will see Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke make a number of recommendations to the President of the United States regarding the status of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the American west (and one in Maine) as well as 5 marine national monuments in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Most recommendations have been agreed upon, several more are still being discussed by the executive staff at Interior. According to the draft which was circulated among Interior executive staff last week it looks like we are going to lose around 12 national monuments (either completely eliminated or reduced in size).
We are in a epic struggle for the very heart of America, YOUR national parks, national monuments, national marine sanctuaries, national conservation areas, national wildlife refuges and national forests.

Once we know the full depth of the destruction of America’s national monuments which will be released this week, we will begin our resistance which will take many forms, congressional lobbying, public rallies, letters to the editor of local newspapers and lawsuits.
But no matter what the recommendations to the President are, the decision on the future of YOUR national monuments are the President’s alone to make. So our resistance must include massive support for America’s national monuments to the President of the United States:

Whitehouse comment form:  https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/
Even though decisions have been made many of us are still tweeting @SecretaryZinke with the message “Do not change America’s National Monuments”.
YOU are an important part of this resistance. I will be updating you as Interior Secretary Zinke lets us know his recommendations to the President.
And to end on a positive note, this Friday, August 25th is the 101st birthday of America’s National Park Service, the stewards of our great national parks, national monuments and national historic sites. I always get excited on August 25th because August 25th is also my birthday, so many fond memories of spending so many of my past birthdays visiting many of America’s great national parks. Happy Birthday National Park Service, we love you and we are standing with you.
for the wild,
Jim Hines,
Los Padres Chapter of the Sierra Club.
