LAST DAY to combat climate change deniers & fossil-fuel-industry shills trying to get on the EPA Science Advisory board! -9/28

You may think it doesn’t matter if climate deniers take over our scientific review committees.

“Under Pruitt, the agency has already removed a Web page devoted to climate change science that presented the scientific consensus view that it is largely caused by humans, and Pruitt has endorsed the idea of a “Red Team”/“Blue Team” exercise, in which a group of outside critics would interrogate the validity of mainstream scientific conclusions. The agency also has begun taking steps to roll back Obama-era climate regulations, while President Trump has proposed deep cuts to climate research.” (wapo)

You may think that no one in their right mind would write in to defend these people…so you can just relax…

Sanity-Saving good news – “There is a moral movement rising” – Edition

People are standing together and becoming more powerful.

“If statues come down, racism can still be up.”  Reverend William J. Barber sets the record straight on systemic racism and white supremacy in America.

“The death of that young girl traumatizes me and the nation. You cannot push back against that with just every now an then having a rally. You have to have a long-term movement that names the issues, and then challenges them with a deep moral argument, not just a political argument.

There is a moral movement rising in this country that is saying, “Dr. King is dead. Fannie

Lou Hamer is dead. Rabbi Heschel is dead. Dorothy Day is dead. Harriet Tubman is dead. Elizabeth Cady Stanton is dead, Frederick Douglass is dead.

But we are their children, and it is time – now – for us to raise our moral dissent. Continue reading “Sanity-Saving good news – “There is a moral movement rising” – Edition”

This one is easy…The Sierra Club’s got it all set up for you.

Tell the Bureau of Land Management that they should protect public lands, not polluters.

Submit your public comment here.

(Extra Credit: If you customize your comment to show why you care about this issue it will have a bigger impact)
The Trump administration is trying to remove environmental protections that would shield public and tribal lands and water from the worst effects of fracking.

The Bureau of Land Management’s fracking rule was created to make sure that fracking well construction protects local water supplies, ensure that the fluids that flow back to the surface because of fracking are managed responsibly, and provide public disclosure of the chemicals used in fracking. Removing safeguards only benefits Trump’s oil industry buddies.

Fracking injects millions of gallons of fluids and chemicals directly into the earth. A 2011 study by the House Committee on Energy identified more than 700 chemicals used in fracking, including benzene, acrylamide, ethylene oxide, bisphenol A (BPA), and formaldehyde — all well-known carcinogens.

Nominee Watch – “EPA Science Advisors” Edition – Written Comment Deadline 9/28

So here’s the scoop…

The EPA is filling up vacancies on the EPA Charter Science Advisory Board.

They’ve got all the official biographies of the candidates listed here. Frankly, they are very dull reading.

However, a least 11 of the bios are missing some REALLY INTERESTING BITS! Both E&E News and Scientific American are warning us about them in this article and this one.

11 of the nominees are climate change deniers!

And they are each angling for an important scientific advisory job with the power to corrupt our country’s environmental legislation for years.

“The Science Advisory Board (SAB) is a scientific/technical advisory committee. The objective of the SAB is to provide independent advice and peer review on the scientific and technical aspects of environmental issues to the EPA’s Administrator. While the SAB reports to the EPA Administrator, congressional committees specified in Environmental Research Demonstration and Development Authorization Act may ask the EPA Administrator to have the SAB provide scientific advice on a particular issue.” (EPA)

These  nominees promise to make what’s already happening with our climate worse… Continue reading “Nominee Watch – “EPA Science Advisors” Edition – Written Comment Deadline 9/28″

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News – “Finding Your Voice” Edition.

This weekend will only have Good News and some helpful links for both DACA and SB 54. We don’t need a recap to know that this has been an incredibly hard week.  For those of you who are still waiting, toe poised above the water…

The civil rights movement was messy, disorderly, confrontational and yes, sometimes violent. Those standing on the sidelines of the current racial-justice movement, waiting for a pristine or flawless exercise of righteous protest, will have a long wait. They, we suspect, will be this generation’s version of the millions who claim that they were one of the thousands who marched with Dr. King. Each of us should realize that what we do now is most likely what we would have done during those celebrated protests 50 years ago. Rather than critique from afar, come out of your homes, follow those who are closest to the pain, and help us to redeem this country, and yourselves, in the process.”

Standing up for DACA! We’re peacefully protesting everywhere! You can do it from your couch!
