We’re waking up! Monday – 11/12

#1. – The GOP is officially really nervous!

The GOP has just discovered that people don’t like their plan, so their sales job is intensifying. The Treasure department just put out a one-pager to say that the King-of-Bankruptcies’ policies are enough to increase tax revenue to cover the proposed cuts, but we’re not fooled by their lies. The GOP has already openly announced that they’re sharpening their knives for our social safety net –  Medicare, Medicaid, and welfare, to pay for the huge deficit they’re creating to enrich themselves and their masters.
The House could have just voted for the Senate plan and they’d have been done. Instead they made the mistake of giving us more time to see what’s in this bill. More people are waking up to its essential immorality.

Over 650,000 calls are beginning to spook them…

Add yours! Every day this week. Even if your Representative or Senator is a Democrat.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to express my strong disapproval of H.R. 1, the disastrous Republican tax scam, and to ask that Rep. [___] vote against it when it comes out of the conference committee.

More script if you need itThis proposed tax scam must be stopped. The GOP is targeting welfare, Medicare and Medicaid spending to pay for their own faulty, deficit-producing tax scam OR  [insert personal reason], or find your favorite reason here.

Sanity-Saving Good News – The #MeToo Edition

Good News for Women!

Time Magazine chose the women brave enough to stand up to their harrassers as “Person of the Year” over the man accused of being a harrasser himself. Which is great!

However, as we learn more about the #MeToo movement, it is disappointing to learn that the actual original author, Tarana Burke, who started it as part of her work with young harrassment and assault survivors more than ten years ago, wasn’t included on the cover. Our thanks and congratulations to her.

Friday’s Call-In Prescription

(Photo from http://abc7.com/thomas-fire-destroys-downtown-ventura-apartment-complex/2741430/)

Today is a continuation of our “Evacuation Special”, as our town and surrounding areas are still literally on fire. Today’s post will be notable for its lateness and weird format.

#1 – Assistance gratefully accepted.

Our co-director Veronica was on a writing assignment in Cuba with her husband earlier this week. She’s the one who put this website together and keeps it running, organizes all our resistance events and watches over me. All the hard jobs. While they were gone, the Thomas Fire destroyed her apartment building and literally everything she and her husband owned except for their car at the LAX parking lot and two carry-ons with warm-weather clothing. (http://abc7.com/thomas-fire-destroys-downtown-ventura-apartment-complex/2741430/)

Any assistance to help them get re-started would be gratefully accepted. https://www.gofundme.com/david-and-veronica-fire-fund

#2 – “I’ll take ‘Natural Disasters’ for $100, Alex!” – Keep up the pressure on the #TrumpTaxScam.

Fun new fact: The House Republican tax bill would eliminate deductions for personal losses from wildfires, earthquakes and other natural disasters. (If this were Jeopardy – “What are disasters that happen in California?”) Interestingly enough, it would keep the break for victims of the recent severe hurricanes (“What are disasters that happen mostly in red states?”).

Wednesday’s Call-in Prescription

Today is a continuation of our “Evacuation Special”, as our town and surrounding areas are literally on fire and we’ve relocated to a location with terrible internet access. Today’s post will be notable  for its lateness and weird format. (Picture of Hawaiian Village Apartments, which housed 50 families, including two of our members.)

Notice: Due to the terrible air quality and the high winds predicted for tomorrow, Thursday, 12/6, Indivisible Ventura’s rally to save net neutrality is cancelled!

The rally scheduled for 12 pm – 2 pm at the Verizon office across from the Pacific View Mall on Mills Road is cancelled. Keep your signs though. We are planning to reschedule prior to the vote by the FCC. Stay tuned.

#1. Fight the #TrumpTaxScam. Every. Damn. Day.

Make calling your legislators about the #TrumpTaxScam a daily habit until this fight is done. The level of public protest matters. Politicians monitor their office’s call tallies daily to see if they can continue their corrupt policies with impunity. Show them that we’re watching and that they will pay with their jobs at the poll-booth.

Minimum Script for Dems: My zip code is [#####] and I’m calling to thank Sen./Rep. [Name] for fighting against the Republican tax bill, and I urge [her/him] to keep doing everything possible to defeat it. [Optional: Insert sentence about how the bill will personally affect you.] Thank you.”

Minimal Script for GOP:  My zip code is [#####], and I am stunned and furious that you’ve betrayed the American people to give tax cuts to billionaires. I will do everything in my power to make sure you never get re-elected. Thank you.”

Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

#2. Pass a Clean Dream Act.

The pen IS mightier than the sword… a primer on modern looting and pillaging.

On Friday night, Republican senators passed an astonishingly evil tax bill  with 500 mostly-unread pages. The fight isn’t over yet as it still has to go through the reconciliation process, which means the different versions passed by the House and  Senate have to be consolidated and then passed by both chambers a second time. Unless, of course, Paul Ryan and his gang of thieves allow the Senate gang to decide how to divide their spoils.

Here are some actions you can take to stop this bill from being finalized into law while we still have time.

If your Senators and/or Representative stood against this bill – Thank them, but warn them too:

Minimal script: My zip code is [#####], and I’m calling to thank Rep./Senator [___] for fighting against the Republican tax bill, and I urge [her/him] to vote to go to conference.

More script if you want it:  However, I also want Democrats to stop being doormats, get a spine and stop letting the GOP ignore regular order. What will Rep./Senator [name] do to restore regular order in Congress?

Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

Spank-or-Thank Sunday – Fill up their voice mailboxes in a minute or less!

(From Lauren O’Neal and it’s a great idea!)

If one or both of your senators voted “YES” on the GOP tax plan (every Republican except Corker), call them immediately. Call your GOP Representative too if he/she/they was corrupt enough to vote for the House version.

Probably no one will answer, because it’s a weekend, but you know how when lots of people call about an issue, senators’ voicemails fill up and you can’t leave a message? It would be great if that mailbox was full of 100% rage. It might make them think twice about voting for the next version of the bill.

Minimum Script: “My name is [name], my zip code is [#####], and I am stunned and furious that you’ve betrayed the American people to give tax cuts to billionaires. I will do everything in my power to make sure you never get re-elected. Thank you.”

Effort Required for a Sunday afternoon…
(1) corrupt Senator:    15 seconds
(2) corrupt Senators:   30 seconds
Max. effort! –  (2) corrupt Senators and (1) Representative:  Under 2 minutes.
(If you’re doing this action, it’s time to get more involved in ridding your area of these destructive pests! See Indivisible.org to find a resistance group near you.)

The GOP hands over America for 30 pieces of silver.

“There are two ideas of government,” William Jennings Bryan declared in his 1896 Cross of Gold speech. “There are those who believe that if you will only legislate to make the well-to-do prosperous their prosperity will leak through on those below. The Democratic idea, however, has been that if you legislate to make the masses prosperous their prosperity will find its way up through every class which rests upon them.”

That was more than three decades before the collapse of the economy in 1929. The crash followed a decade of Republican control of the federal government during which trickle-down policies, including massive tax cuts for the rich, produced the greatest concentration of income in the accounts of the richest 0.01 percent at any time between World War I and 2007 (when trickle-down economics, tax cuts for the hyper-rich, and deregulation again resulted in another economic collapse).” (Wapo)(theday)(dailykos)(independent)(VanityFair)(rueters)

Add this to the fact that we’re facing a huge displacement of American workers as automation takes over blue and white-collar jobs and that this tax scam is a nation-wide repeat of a state-wide failed experiment, the chances of a deep recession, or even a depression is incredibly high.

All so a bunch of career political hacks in Washington can please their dark-money masters enough to get re-election campaign funding. Thirty pieces of silver, indeed.

Their #TrumpTaxScam is worse than we imagined…It almost killed Kansas.

People spend have spent millions on books and lectures to learn how rich people achieved their success. This is called learning-by-example.

The GOP wants to do that too, but they’re going to copy the same tax plan mistakes that killed a state.

This #TrumpTaxScam has passed out of committee, BARELY. Flood the phone lines and let’s stop this on the floor.

Their #TrumpTaxScam is worse than we imagined…

(The monetary value of our bodies is actually huge…estimates up to $45 million!)

This #TrumpTaxScam has passed out of committee, BARELY. Flood the phone lines and let’s stop this on the floor.

The CBO has determined that the Senate GOP tax bill hurts the poor more than originally thought. (Wapo), (Wapo), (Time), (Axios), (aol.com) (DailyKos). There are those who are thrilled that 13 million Americans will once again have the “freedom” to choose between eating and paying for insurance, returning “control over their lives” and their health care to emergency room visits.

Mitch McConnell needs to pass the Senate version of the #TrumpTaxScam this week, possibly by Wednesday, if they’re going to be able to give Trump the multi-million dollar Christmas gift he’s demanding. This is our last chance to stop this very unpopular and destructive bill from becoming law.

Step #1. If we defeat it, Trump and the GOP are toast.  Call our own senators!
