Ready. Aim. Don’t Spend.

Most of us are not wealthy people. That doesn’t matter.

We give small amounts of money to charities every year, confident that our contribution, added to thousands of others, will be enough to do good work. We talked about giving to some great organizations, whose success will help America restore its better self.

What we may not be as aware of is that our small purchases, for goods and services, when combined with millions of others, are financing a reign of hate speech that has changed our country for the worse. Back on 8/16, we talked about the influence of media on viewers, and how that has translated into the ballot box.

Since then, the right-wing media’s twisting of American thought is becoming increasingly brazen, using terrifying political terminology that no one would touch before. Fox News host Jesse Watters actually told viewers that we may “have a coup on our hands in America.”

We can stop this. There are a lot of us.

Sanity-Saving Good News – The #MeToo Edition

Good News for Women!

Time Magazine chose the women brave enough to stand up to their harrassers as “Person of the Year” over the man accused of being a harrasser himself. Which is great!

However, as we learn more about the #MeToo movement, it is disappointing to learn that the actual original author, Tarana Burke, who started it as part of her work with young harrassment and assault survivors more than ten years ago, wasn’t included on the cover. Support the Honest Ads Act. It’s a first step and the very least social media giants can do.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask –
Rep. [___]  to support the Honest Ads Act – H.R. 4077
Sen. [____] to support the Honest Ads Act – S. 1989

More script if you want it: Holding online political ads to the same standard as ads published through other media is a critical first step in safeguarding our democracy and preventing foreign interference in elections.

But that’s just a beginning. Add this: We would like the bill to be amended to include tough identification rules and cut off anonymous and semi-anonymous payment methods for advertisers. When the platforms are recognized as publishers, it should become impossible to broadcast content anonymously, without the author’s true, verified identity being known at least to the platforms themselves; it should also be impossible to buy an ad in the U.S. without a U.S. bank account. (Bloomberg). The law should be revisited regularly to keep up with new types of interference methods.
