Stop Trump’s Nightmare of Mass Deportations!

“Rocket Fuel” for Trump’s Mass Deportation Agenda: (HR 2431 (Davis-Oliver Act) / HR 2406 Immigration & Customs Enforcement Authorization Act 2017)

HR 2431 and HR 2406 uses two tragedies as an excuse for the GOP to create a “mass deportation force”, drastically increasing the power of federal and local immigration enforcement to restrict immigration and increase deportation. These bills will enable the revoking of visas, the expansion of ICE, increased deportation of undocumented people, punishment of sanctuary cities and the arming of deportation officers with M-4 rifles. (Yes, the same officers they don’t have time to thoroughly vet for corruption and criminal backgrounds…).
Says the Cato Institute: “(H.R. 2431) purports to empower states and localities to take action against serious criminals who have violated immigration law. In reality, the bill is a vehicle for a massive expansion of the federal government and of federal power over states and their citizens.”
Don’t let this slip by. It’s a bad one.

Script:  I’m calling to urge you to vote NO on HR 2431 and HR 2406, which would expand Trump’s mass deportation agenda.  Targeting our immigrants harms our communities and degrades us all.

Give Formerly Incarcerated People a Chance…

Up to 75% of formerly incarcerated people cannot find jobs, largely due to employer discrimination.  They should not be punished for their crimes after they complete their sentences.  The Fair Chance Act (S.842 / H.R.1906) bars federal employers and contractors from asking applicants about their criminal history until they reach the final stages of the hiring process.

Script:  I’m calling today to ask you to support the Fair Chance Act.  Employer discrimination traps formerly incarcerated people and their families in poverty, and increases the likelihood of recidivism.

Unintended Consequences: Teens can face 15 years in prison for sexting.

“No” on HR 1761!
While  closing “loopholes” in child porn legislation, HR 1761 is overbroad in scope and will punish those it is designed to protect: teens. At least half of our teens have admitted to teen-to-teen sexting, this bill could land them in jail for a 15-year mandatory sentence. Don’t remove judicial discretion! The bill has passed the House and now heads to the Senate. We need to stop it now!

Script: I’m calling to ask Senator (____) to vote “NO” on HR 1761. With sentencing discretion removed from judges, our private prison system will fill up with teenagers serving mandatory 15- year sentences for doing what half of teenagers admit to doing. Revenge sexts and bullying need to be addressed and punished, but this is going too far.

Border Patrol: No Hiring Short-cuts! They Increase Corruption and Abuse.

Oppose HR 2213. Only qualified people should serve as border agents

The White House wants to ramp up hiring of border patrol guards to support its immigration policies, and it appears that they are having trouble finding qualified applicants fast enough.  Their solution is to eliminate some of the vetting requirements, such as a polygraph test, that weed out the criminal and unqualified. Tell Rep. (Carbajal/Brownley) to vote NO on HR 2213
Script: I’m calling today to express my opposition to HR 2213.  We need to ensure that only qualified men and women are hired to serve as border patrol agents. The polygraph test has weeded out criminals in the past, do not do away with it.

Support the Environment in the Budget!

Fight Trump’s multi-pronged attack on the environment!

Trump has pulled us out of the Paris Climate Accord, and his budget slashes EPA funding by 31%.  Ask Congress to support common-sense climate action, by completely funding the EPA, and providing foreign assistance for climate adaptation, funding for alternative energy research, and job retraining for workers impacted by the transition to clean energy.

Script:  I’m calling to ask (___) to counter Trump’s move on the Paris Climate Accord by fighting for common-sense climate action in the budget, including fully funding the EPA and transitioning us to a clean energy future.

Say “NO” to another Climate Change Denier!

Enough with these horrid Climate Science Deniers!

David Bernhardt, an oil lobbyist who has been nominated to be Deputy Secretary of the Interior, remarked during his Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee confirmation hearing that following Trump’s policies would take precedence over climate science. Oppose Bernhardt’s nomination, we don’t need another oil lobbyist and climate science denier in the government.

Script: Hi, I’m calling Senator (____) to insist that the next person working on environmental issues in the Federal government have a minimum requirement of understanding the seriousness of global warming as well as the ability to stand up to the President when he’s wrong. We already have enough lapdogs for that man.

Trump’s budget includes a mean-spirited 25% cut to the food stamp (SNAP) program!

Trump’s budget cuts 25% from the food stamp (SNAP) budget. 45 million Americans, nearly half of them children who rely on food stamps. Studies consistently show that SNAP reduces hunger and food insecurity and provides lasting health benefits to recipients. SNAP is also an important way to lift families out of poverty, and to tide them over during times of economic insecurity.

Script: I’m calling to ask (____) to oppose any cuts to SNAP.  I do not support funding tax cuts for the wealthy by cutting critical food assistance to families and children.

Now is the time to ensure California women & their families have family planning services they need. (SB743)

SB 743 allows the Medi-Cal (California’s version of Medicaid) to cover family planning services, such as Planned Parenthood. California has implemented this freedom of choice provision for decades, but it is not codified in California law. Given recent events in Washington, now is the time to ensure California women and their families have the family planning services they need.

Script: Hi I’m calling to urge Senator Jackson to support SB743. We need to ensure that Medi-Cal patients will continue to receive the family planning services they need.
Call Hannah-Beth Jackson: SAC (916) 651-4019, SB (805) 965-0862, OX (805) 988-1940

It’s decision time for hundreds of pieces of legislation in California this week. Make some calls!

The Senate’s fiscal committee will decide the fate of bills on Thursday, June 1st; the Assembly will do so on Friday, June 2nd.  The ones that pass will then move to the opposite house.

With our strong Democratic majority, California has the ability to counter some of the negative policies coming out of Washington D.C. Our friends at Indivisible San Francisco short-listed some of the most important bills. If you have time this week, please pick the ones that speak the most to you, and make some phone calls.

State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Assemblywoman Monique Limon don’t receive many calls from their constituents, so if we all make our voices heard this week, we can make a real difference.

CALL TO STATE ACTION

TUESDAY 5/30 – FRIDAY 6/2
Pick your favorite bills from the list ISF has put together and let our state MoCs know how you feel.

Assembly: Call State Assembly Member Monique Limón: Sacramento: (916) 319-2037, Santa Barbara: (805) 564-1649, Ventura: (805) 641-3700 If outside of these areas, find your Representatives here.
