Save the National Forensic Science Commission!

Submit a comment to the DOJ to save the National Forensic Science Commission (NCFS), which works to make forensic science an evidence-based, ethical, and valid tool in obtaining convictions and keeping innocent people out of jail.  Sounds good, right?  Yet Jeff Sessions is trying to kill the program, and only 186(!) comments have been filed in response so far.

Trump’s budget includes a mean-spirited 25% cut to the food stamp (SNAP) program!

Trump’s budget cuts 25% from the food stamp (SNAP) budget. 45 million Americans, nearly half of them children who rely on food stamps. Studies consistently show that SNAP reduces hunger and food insecurity and provides lasting health benefits to recipients. SNAP is also an important way to lift families out of poverty, and to tide them over during times of economic insecurity.

Script: I’m calling to ask (____) to oppose any cuts to SNAP.  I do not support funding tax cuts for the wealthy by cutting critical food assistance to families and children.

Comment in Support of Net Neutrality and the Open Internet

Net Neutrality is not negotiable. It’s essential to everything we need in our society and democracy — from educational and economic opportunities to political organizing and dissent. Millions of people fought for over a decade to secure lasting Net Neutrality protections. We will not accept anything less. We urge you to reject any attacks on real Net Neutrality.

The comment period runs through the end of July.  Instructions on how to comment and sample talking points can be found here (please use your own words):

Now is the time to ensure California women & their families have family planning services they need. (SB743)

SB 743 allows the Medi-Cal (California’s version of Medicaid) to cover family planning services, such as Planned Parenthood. California has implemented this freedom of choice provision for decades, but it is not codified in California law. Given recent events in Washington, now is the time to ensure California women and their families have the family planning services they need.

Script: Hi I’m calling to urge Senator Jackson to support SB743. We need to ensure that Medi-Cal patients will continue to receive the family planning services they need.

It’s decision time for hundreds of pieces of legislation in California this week. Make some calls!

The Senate’s fiscal committee will decide the fate of bills on Thursday, June 1st; the Assembly will do so on Friday, June 2nd.  The ones that pass will then move to the opposite house.

With our strong Democratic majority, California has the ability to counter some of the negative policies coming out of Washington D.C. Our friends at Indivisible San Francisco short-listed some of the most important bills. If you have time this week, please pick the ones that speak the most to you, and make some phone calls.

State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Assemblywoman Monique Limon don’t receive many calls from their constituents, so if we all make our voices heard this week, we can make a real difference.

CALL TO STATE ACTION

TUESDAY 5/30 – FRIDAY 6/2

Call to State Action – “Yes” on the Healthy California Act (SB 562)

No matter what devastation Trump and the GOP manage to do to Obamacare, the Healthy California Act (SB 562) will protect the health of all Californians. A state funded single payer system will provide universal coverage and choice of licensed health professionals and services to everyone living in California. It’s time CA’s healthcare joined the rest of the advanced nations.

Script: “I’m calling today to ask you to support Senate Bill 562 “Californians For A Healthy California.” I’m asking that you stand up and help California take the lead in creating a comprehensive universal single-payer health coverage program. Please vote for healthcare as a basic human right for all Californians.”

Vote “NO” on the Financial Choice Act. We’re not in the mood for another Great Recession!

Remember the 2008 financial crisis that nearly tanked the world economy? Congress doesn’t.

They want to repeal key parts of Dodd-Frank, including the Volker Rule prohibiting banks from making those risky speculative investments that caused the mess.  They also want to prevent the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from fining institutions for unfair lending practices.

Script: I’m calling to ask Congresswoman Brownley to vote NO on the “Financial Choice Act”, the GOP-inspired repeal of the parts of the Dodd-Frank act that endanger our economy while making Trump and his friends rich.

Call Rep. Julia Brownley: DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

The Unsettling Truth of the Rolling Back of Dodd-Frank Regulations

Ready, Aim…RESEARCH! Stop the NRA stranglehold on information.

Gun violence in our country is at historic levels, yet for 15 years Congress has blocked the CDC from researching it.  Accurate information is a great basis for public policy on guns. HR 1832 / S843 would direct the CDC to research gun violence prevention and firearm safety over the next five years.  Let’s thank our members of Congress for being cosponsors of these bills. Write them a note, by email or postcard to say thanks!

It’s time for California to lead the way.

While the millionaires in Congress and the insurance industry are busy figuring out the best way of applying lipstick to their pig – giving us a lot less care for a lot more money, it’s time for California to step up to protect its citizens. We are ready for the fierce  disinformation campaigns that will be funded by the insurance industry. Bring it on!
