Wed 10/31: This is scarier than anything that will come to your door tonight. Last day to comment on this environmental travesty.

On Tuesday, we asked people to comment on a proposed rollback of CA’s Clean Car Standards (Due 10/26), reminding us that even during the distractions of this election season, the Trump administrations’ efforts to push all of our environmental protections through a regulatory shredding machine, continues without pause. We need to gather our wits, our computers and smartphones, and keep fighting on this moving battle line.

Saturday – Candlelight Vigil for Victims of Hate

This has been a hellish week in America…

A white supremacist Trump fan sent bombs to Democratic political leaders, donors, and CNN; black people were murdered at a grocery store after the domestic terrorist was locked out of the predominantly black church he was targeting; and a rabid anti-semite, inflamed with conspiracy theories, attacked a synagogue, killing 11 in the deadliest targeting of the Jewish community in American history. The administration is preparing to erase the existence of transgender people and troops are gathering at our borders to stop people who are coming to plead for their lives. And now, our president appears ready to create a class of stateless citizens, an act similar to one that preceded the worst atrocities of the Holocaust.

Martin Luther King said that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

This is the time when our vote and our efforts can mean more than ever. But we also need time to mourn these losses and reaffirm our vision and purpose together as a community. Come to Mission Park (right across from the Mission in downtown Ventura) and spread some light and love with us in a vigil for the victims of hate and for a better and more just America.

We’re starting at 5:00. Sundown is just after 6:00. We will be there until 7:00. Wear warm clothes, and bring candles or fire-safe alternatives.

Mon 10/29: Calling for more poll workers!

Action – If you’re not in Indivisible Ventura’s adopt-a-poll crew, volunteer to be a regular poll worker in Thousand Oaks, Simi, Moorpark, Oxnard or Port Hueneme.

We the People: What we political newbies keep learning is how essential the private citizen is in keeping the lights on in this democratic experiment we call America. One may think that state governments are in completely in charge of elections…organizing, facilitating and sometimes suppressing them, and we just show up to vote. But the person handing you your ballot and helping you feed it into the voting machine is a regular civilian, just like you.

After the polls close, and everybody else is home watching the early returns on television, county parking lots are transformed into a klieg-light bright islands of activity, as regular citizens – two representatives from every polling place in our huge county, pull their cars up, one after another, to return voting equipment and relinquish their sealed bags of ballots.

This, at the end, is what democracy looks like. Something to be very proud of. Something to protect and aid.

In Ventura County, they need more of you to help make our experiment work!

Fri – 10/26: Part 2 – Your crazy-busy weekend: Create your canvassing plan.

Why we need EVERYONE to canvass…

  • No, not just extroverts who love knocking on doors and talking to people.
  • No, not just expert canvassers.
  • No, not just political wonks who know the argument for everything.

Everyone!

Steve Knight, (R-CA 25) a Trump-clone, won his race last time when there were more Democrats than Republicans in his district!

Hmmm….that’s not right…

We need to convince people that their votes are important in protecting themselves and their families – health care, social security, Medicare, Medicaid, education, the environment and climate change, immigration policy, net neutrality, LGBTQ+ and civil rights are all on the chopping block. Rallies Planned for Cities Nationwide to Back Climate Youth Battling Trump in #TrialoftheCentury

“All of us have a responsibility to double down in supporting the young people holding the U.S. government responsible for perpetuating climate change and threatening our collective future.”

Read about the Juliana v. United States case here and here and follow #youthvgov on twitter.

Then, join in a rally (By Martha Fellows of Ojai and 350 Local Group Network) at our Ventura County Government Center, at the corner of S. Victoria Ave and Telephone Road, to be a part of the #TrialoftheCentury and support the young plaintiffs in the historic Juliana v. United States court case.

Our freedom depends on a climate system that will sustain human life. Let’s show the government that it has a duty to prepare and implement a Climate Recovery Plan to protect our basic and most fundamental rights!

You can RSVP here.
