Demand that Congress oversees Russia Sanctions, not Trump!

The Senate’s bipartisan bill (S.722) on sanctions for Russia and Iran heads to the House. The bill codifies the Obama sanctions, beefs up sanctions on cyber activity and weapons sales, and adds new sanctions for human rights violations. Critically, it gives Congress, not Trump’s administration, the right to review and reject any lifting of sanctions against Russia.

Script:  I’m calling to urge Representative […] to support the efforts to enforce Congressional oversight for any lifting of sanctions against Russia and Iran.  It’s clear that we cannot trust the Trump administration to do the right thing.

Johnson Amendment keeps churches from endorsing candidates, so of course Trump wants it weakened.

The Johnson Amendment prohibits tax-exempt houses of worship from endorsing political candidates or making campaign contributions. At Trump’s urging the House’s Financial Services spending bill includes a provision that bars the IRS from enforcing the Johnson Amendment. The bill moves to the House Appropriations Committee this week for further debate. Put a stop to it now.

Script:  Separation of church and state is fundamental to American Democracy.  Please save the Johnson Amendment.

The Ozone Implementation Act undercuts 46 years of air quality protections. Oppose!

One hundred and twenty one organizations oppose HR 806, which eliminates the right to safe air that we enjoy under the Clean Air Act. It would delay for ten years efforts to improve air quality, and even the right to know if the air is safe to breathe. By expanding exemptions and imposing barriers to strict air quality standards, it undercuts 46 years of air quality protection.

Script:  I ask Representative (________)  to oppose HR 806, the Ozone Standards Implementation Act.  Many areas in California do not yet meet the EPA’s ozone standard, and I’m concerned because ozone causes asthma, lung disease and premature death.  Please don’t weaken clean air protections; oppose HR 806.

The United States has one of the worst maternal health records in the developed world

Both bills (S 1112 / HR 1318) support States in their work to save and sustain the health of mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and in the postpartum period.  Every year in the U.S., 700 to 900 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes, and some 65,000 nearly die —the worst record in the developed world. These bills aim to identify solutions to improve healthcare and health outcomes for mothers.

Script:  I’m calling […] to ask them to support [S 1112 / HR 1318].  It’s way past time for the United States to address our persistently high maternal mortality rates.

The sanctuary city attack that we’ve all been dreading is coming up for a vote in the House THIS Thursday. Call ASAP!

HR 3003 attacks sanctuary cities, which would be forced to comply with ICE detainment requests to keep immigrants in jail so that they can be deported. If localities don’t comply, they would be denied much-needed Homeland Security and Justice Department grants.  HR 3003 also expands mandatory detention policies and the government’s ability to indefinitely detain immigrants.

Script:  I’m calling to ask (___) to oppose the “No Sanctuary for Criminals Act.”  This anti-immigrant bill is a blatant attack on the ability of localities to determine how best to keep their communities safe.

Trump’s proposed budget completely defunds the West Coast’s earthquake warning system

After years of work, an earthquake early warning system for the west coast was scheduled to begin operating next year. The system would deliver an early warning of an earthquake or tsunami to every cell phone. Trump’s budget would defund it. Public safety is a nonpartisan issue, and stopping progress on the warning system would put millions of lives at risk.

Script:  I’m calling to ask (___) to fight to maintain funding for the west coast earthquake warning system that has been in development for many years.  Public safety is a nonpartisan issue.

The House is expected to bring the anti-immigrant Kate’s Law to a vote this week!

“No” on Anti-Immigrant Kate’s Law (HR 361, S 45, HR 3004)

These bills revive a bill introduced by Ted Cruz in 2015 which would establish mandatory minimum sentences for immigrants who try to re-enter the United States after being deported. It removes protections for people who reenter the U.S. for humanitarian reasons or who seek protection at the border and limits the ability of immigrants to challenge their removal on legal grounds. Prosecutions for illegal reentry are extremely costly, will fill up our jails with refugees from violence, and have not been shown to deter unauthorized immigration. After extensive research, even the conservative Cato Institute opposes this legislation.

Script: I’m calling to ask Rep.(Brown or Carbajal) to vote NO on HR 361 & 3004, Kate’s Law. This law prevents those trying to reenter for humanitarian reasons or for protection from violence. Filling up our jails with these people will be expensive, counter-productive and cruel.

Script: I’m calling to ask Senator (Feinstein and Harris) to vote NO on S 45, Kate’s Law. This law prevents those trying to reenter for humanitarian reasons or for protection from violence. Filling up our jails with these people will be expensive, counter-productive and cruel.

If you Commit a Hate Crime, then you Shouldn’t Own a Gun. Disarm Hate!

Although 30 states have misdemeanor-level hate crimes on the books, only six prohibit gun ownership for those convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes. The Disarm Hate Act will close this loophole and prevent anyone convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes from purchasing a gun. These people have proven that they can’t control their anger. Don’t arm them too.

Script:  I’m calling from [zip] to ask you to support the Disarm Hate Act (S. 1324/H.R. 2841).  We need to take action to keep guns out of the wrong hands and prevent more acts of violence.

USA is Not for Sale – Thank our MoC for insisting Trump complies with the emoluments clause

Trump’s budget includes a mean-spirited 25% cut to the food stamp (SNAP) program!

Trump’s budget cuts 25% from the food stamp (SNAP) budget. 45 million Americans, nearly half of them children who rely on food stamps. Studies consistently show that SNAP reduces hunger and food insecurity and provides lasting health benefits to recipients. SNAP is also an important way to lift families out of poverty, and to tide them over during times of economic insecurity.

Script: I’m calling to ask (____) to oppose any cuts to SNAP.  I do not support funding tax cuts for the wealthy by cutting critical food assistance to families and children.
