Monuments from the Jim Crow Era Must Go: Remove Statues Celebrating the Confederacy from the Capitol Building – Fri. 8/25

If you haven’t seen this video, it is the most powerful lesson we’ve ever seen about why these statues must go. Please share it with anyone who remains in confusion and/or denial about this issue. Like the Germans after WWII have already done, it’s time that we Americans learn to deal honestly with the truth of our history.

Minimal Script: I’m calling {Sen.[2 calls] (&) Rep [1 call]} to insist that statues honoring the Confederacy be removed from the National Capitol to the Smithsonian or some other appropriate repository. Fight White Nationalism: Government Must Fund the Countering Violent Extremism Program!

Minimal Script: I’m calling to ask {Sen.[2 calls] (&) Rep [1 call]}  to require that the Countering Violent Extremism program stays focused on white nationalism, and that CVE grants are fully funded.

(Additional script if you want to: A substantial portion of CVE grants are awarded to respond to the threat of white nationalism. We need a Department of Homeland Security that fights domestic terrorism on every front—including white nationalism—and they need to have the budget to do it.)

Vote NO on HR 2796, the hate-based Civil Rights Uniformity Act. Transgender rights are human rights!

NO on HR. 2090 “Election Integrity”Act. Yet another suppression bill that will disenfranchise millions of voters!

H.R. 2090 is a “solution” in search of a problem. Instead of requiring photo ID’s to discourage minorities and the poor from voting, Congress should invest in in updating and securing our nation’s voting systems. Voter ID laws only serve to marginalize already marginalized communities. Making it harder for US citizens to vote is un-American.

Script: I’m calling Rep (____) to vote NO on H.R. 2090, the Election Integrity Act. Some Americans can’t afford two hours off work to get to a distant center to get a photo ID. This law amounts to a poll tax penalizing the poorest Americans.

Call Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

No to gutting our Consumer Banking Protections – A recipe for recession!

The new House Financial Services spending bill makes sweeping changes to the financial regulatory system by revising the protections that were put in place after the 2008-2009 economic crash. It sneaks in 88 pages of the odious and misleading HR 10 – “Financial Choice Act” to control and weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Financial Stability Oversight Council, and the SEC regulations that prevent commercial banks from trading for their own gain. This way, they can still grab power even if the Senate refuses to pass HR 10.

Script: I’m calling to ask Rep. [____] to oppose the Financial Services 2018 spending bill’s funding changes and new enforcement limitations on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and other banking regulators. Dodd-Frank was put into place to prevent another recession and to protect us from predatory financial practices.

Call Rep. Julia Brownley (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

The Stupid Border Wall is not JUST a waste of money. It threatens our biggest wildlife refuges.

Although Trump has concerns for drug dealers throwing bags over the wall, he hasn’t given any thought to wildlife. Initial construction testing has begun on a section that would split an refuge ecosystem in two. Negative wildlife impact from border fencing has been well-documented, and this unnecessary barrier will harm our wildlife and the environment.

Script: I calling Congressperson [_____]  to OPPOSE including any border-wall funding in the next budget, and to oppose any legislation that would provide additional funding. Not only is this a waste of money, but it also destroys our national wildlife refuges, as well as the eco-tourism that thrives because of them.

Congress wants to party like it’s 2008 — say “no thanks” to weakening Banking Protections!

Ryan Zinke told me that “wildlife needs to show that it has economic value to warrant protection” – Jim Hines, Sierra Club

Update from Jim Hines 7/18:

Greetings Activists:
YOU are making a powerful difference. On our conference call this morning with U.S. Dept of the Interior officials in DC they said that so many people are calling, emailing and texting various Dept of Interior staff (including the Secretary of Interior himself) about protecting national public lands and wildlife that it is getting overwhelming.
And this is all because of YOU. So lets keep it up. Never stop speaking out on what is important to you.
YOU matter, YOU make a difference.
for the wild,
Jim

Save the Endangered Species Act! Congress is considering multiple bills on July 19th – including one from Senator Rand Paul – that would gut the Endangered Species Act and put countless species at risk of extinction. These bills allow decisions on the fate of endangered species to be made by local politicians, not scientists. Call to stop these cynical attempts to destroy the Endangered Species Act.

Please contact members of the House Committee on Natural Resources before July 18th:

https://naturalresources.house.gov/contact/

Address all comments to Chairman Bishop and copy your member of congress as well.

Script: I’m calling Rep. [___] to convey our disapproval of  the 5 bills coming up to U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources on July 19th. In an age where the pace of extinctions is increasing, we need to stop any reductions in Endangered Species Act protections.

Call all three Members of Congress:

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

AND Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884
