You can assist a young immigrant with their DACA renewal!

On Tuesday, September 5th, the Trump administration announced that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will end on March 5, 2018.  Now, young immigrants across our county and nation are scrambling to extend as much as possible the DACA work permit they now have and need desperately to carry on with their lives.  Any work permit expiring between now and March 5th needs to be renewed no later than October 5th to maintain the applicant’s limited status of protection from deportation.

A fee of $495 must accompany each application for DACA renewal.  CLUE-Ventura County is collecting donations to help defray the cost of renewal applications.  Funds must be received by September 21st and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Ask CA legislators to pass SB 183 and keep ICE out of State buildings. Deadline Sept. 15!

(Photos from http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-romulo-avelica-deportation-20170731-story.html)

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [__] and I’m asking my Rep [__] and Sen. [__] to vote YES on SB 183 (“State buildings: federal immigration agents” Act) before the legislative deadline of Sept. 15th.

More Script if you want it: This bill would make schools, state-owned buildings and college campuses off-limits to federal immigration agents and would force officers to get warrants before they visit public sites for surveillance or arrests. Our neighbors need this to feel safe in their daily lives.

More Script if you want it: This bill that criminalizes immigrants, including those fleeing gang violence, and allows more of them to be detained and deported. It also affects vulnerable populations such as asylum seekers, TPS holders, and unaccompanied children.

DACA resources – Updated 9/11

(Updated 9/14)

Free Help with DACA paperwork – Pass this on!

Ventura attorney Vanessa Frank, a specialist in immigration law and CLUE’s immediate past chair, is offering free assistance with the application process through September 29th for any eligible DACA holder who contacts her office at 143 Figueroa St, Ventura, (805) 641-9300.

Any work permit expiring between now and March 5th needs to be renewed no later than October 5th to maintain the applicant’s limited status of protection from deportation. Some application funds are already available through a generous anonymous donor; those funds will support 20 applicants.  With an estimated 7,000 DACA-eligible immigrants in Ventura County, the demand for renewal will surely outstrip currently available funds.

Update on the “free” filing fees. We need more donors!

A fee of $495 must accompany each application for DACA renewal.  CLUE-Ventura County is collecting donations to help defray the cost of renewal applications.  Funds must be received by September 21st and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please donate by September 21st via PayPal or credit card at www.cluevc.org, or mail a check payable to CLUE-VC to PO Box 3066, Ventura, CA 93006.  100% of donations received now through September 21st will be used for DACA renewals.

Your Weekly Dose of Sanity-Saving Good News – “Finding Your Voice” Edition.

This weekend will only have Good News and some helpful links for both DACA and SB 54. We don’t need a recap to know that this has been an incredibly hard week.  For those of you who are still waiting, toe poised above the water…

The civil rights movement was messy, disorderly, confrontational and yes, sometimes violent. Those standing on the sidelines of the current racial-justice movement, waiting for a pristine or flawless exercise of righteous protest, will have a long wait. They, we suspect, will be this generation’s version of the millions who claim that they were one of the thousands who marched with Dr. King. Each of us should realize that what we do now is most likely what we would have done during those celebrated protests 50 years ago. Rather than critique from afar, come out of your homes, follow those who are closest to the pain, and help us to redeem this country, and yourselves, in the process.”

Standing up for DACA! We’re peacefully protesting everywhere! You can do it from your couch!
