Mon 12/17: Three actions today.

Two proposed rules changes close out today and some continued support for your legislators to do the right thing.

Those of us who aren’t scientists may feel we’re not qualified to write about methane pollution, or offshore oil drilling. Not true. Skim through the postings below to get an understanding of what’s being proposed. Stop and look at the links that interest you and reference them in your posts if you wish.

Your comment can be broad-brush : America’s reputation, our economy, government corruption, unbridled corporate power and greed, the environment, the future. Or just one aspect that affects you deeply: your air, your water, your joy, your health and the health of those you love.

There are no wrong answers. The only wrong action is letting this administration think that we don’t care enough to stop them.

Action #1 – DEADLINE TODAY! – December 17th, 11:59 EST

Mon – 12/10: Warm up your keyboard! Last day to do battle on the “Public Charge” disaster. Deadline tonight 11:59 EST.

Despite what Netflix and Hallmark would have you believe, this holiday season is actually about a Jewish family who, after the birth of their son, fled their homeland to save his life. That baby, whose family became refugees in Egypt and then displaced persons in Nazareth of Galilee, grew up to be a man who asked all who believed in him to “welcome the stranger”, as he himself was.

Action – Deadline TONIGHT on “public charge” rule that hurts kids. DEADLINE Dec. 10th, 11:59 EST

Today, religious or not, we ask you, on the last day of this devastating “public charge” rule’s open comment period, to take two minutes and write a sentence to defend the lives and health of the immigrants who live amongst us. This proposed rule severely limits eligibility for entry to the U.S.. It will also deny visas and green cards to immigrants already in the U.S. legally as well as to non-citizen family members of U.S. citizens. Currently, non-citizens seeking U.S. entry and those applying for green cards must pass a “public charge test” if they need cash assistance. The new rule, which disproportionately targets families, the poor, and people with disabilities, would target non-cash benefits such as health care, food, and housing assistance. The Department of Homeland Security will use a list of “negative factors” against those who are the “wrong” age, poor or disabled, even if they’ve never used any government services.  These factors include:

  • Household size of 3 or more
  • No private health insurance coverage
  • No high school diploma
  • Earning less than 125% of the federal poverty level ($31,375 for a family of four)
  • A disability or chronic health condition.
  • Limited English language
  • Under age 18 or over age 61

These rules will affect over 1 million people green card applicants a year, as well as 10 million seeking non-immigrant temporary visas, and about 500,000 non-immigrants seeking extensions of stay or changes of non-immigrant status. This includes up to half of all marriage green card applicants a year.

If you have more time…write paragraphs and/or attach your college thesis on the economic benefits of immigrants. Our keyboards can literally save lives.

You can post a comment directly to the government site here.

Use your name or post anonymously. Post as many times as you can. The longer and more involved the comment, the better, but even a single-sentence comment is important. Every unique comment counts! Identical comments will be culled. See what other people are writing here.

Fri – 12/7: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Rally plus 4 Actions!

(Original video has been removed. This link includes excerpts of the video.)

Yep, it’s true. Ammon Bundy, leader of the 2016 occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and who recently claimed that his Mormon church had been infiltrated by socialists, globalists and environmentalists, is standing up for immigrants at the border. Following the tenets of his faith, he has become their outspoken defender, forcing him to leave behind his shocked militia movement and other “patriot” groups.” His father, Clive Bundy, supports his views, as do a surprising number of others across the political divide.

This holiday season is about a family of Jewish refugees, who left behind their homeland to save their son’s life. This Sunday, CLUE (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice) is reaching out to people of faith and others to embrace their religious foundational traditions of welcoming and supporting the “strangers” in our midst.

It’s time to reach out, even to the most unlikely of allies, and stand indivisible in support of these asylum seekers.

Action #1 – Sunday, Dec. 9th – SOS! Sunday of Solidarity with Refugee Families. (Correction – not a rally…more of a vigil.)

Sunday Dec. 2nd: Mark your calendar! We will NOT be silently complicit to crimes against humanity.

On November 25, 2018, U.S. Border Agents fired tear gas and rubber bullets at a group of immigrants crossing into San Diego from Tijuana, Mexico, including young children. These policies are cruel and unjustified, and must be loudly rejected as the crimes against humanity that they were. The people who were fired upon are fleeing dangerous conditions and have the human and legal right to seek asylum in the U.S.

Join Families Belong Together, along with Indivisible Ventura and all of our friends, for a Sunday afternoon rally on Dec. 2nd, 2 pm – 4 pm, at the Ventura County Government Center, to say, “STOP THE TEARS.”

Bring American flags, signs and the spirit of your own family’s history of asylum-seeking refugees.

Share this link with your friends and family and ask them to join us.

If you would like to help at the border monetarily, click here.

Mon 9/17: Last minute action! – Stop the census citizenship question. Comment Deadline Today, 9/17, at 11:59 EST!

Action – Remove the discriminatory citizenship question from 2020 U.S. Census! – Deadline, Today, Monday 9/17, 11:59 pm EST

“The Supreme Court in 2016 ruled unanimously that “representatives serve all residents, not just those eligible or registered to vote,” and the Constitution makes clear that the census has a clear purpose: to count all U.S. residents, regardless of background, as the basis for the apportionment of political power. The Census Bureau spent most of this decade responding to this mandate, leading painstaking research, technology development and question testing. With their belated interference, Trump and Sessions are upending this meticulous preparation.

The harm from this decision, if it’s not reversed, will be expensive and long- lasting.” (wapo)

Fri 8/3: It just takes one census question on citizenship to steal power from our state. Comment now to stop this! Deadline Tuesday, Aug. 7th.

Action – Remove Discriminatory Citizenship Question from 2020 U.S. Census! – Deadline, Tuesday, Aug. 7th, 11:59 pm EST

How to comment on this census scam:

  •  Click here to comment. Write, submit, you’re done.
  • You can also submit your comment through the  MomsRising.org site here. Add a personal message if you can.
  • If you’re interested in reading the administration’s nonsense explanation of this whole scam, click here.
  • If you need more inspiration, go here. (currently under construction, apparently)

Background

Why is this census so important?: It’s critical that the U.S. Census gets an accurate headcount of everyone in the United States. The population counts are used to determine:

  • how to allocate billions of tax dollars (hospitals, public schools, public services, etc.)
  • how many U.S. representatives in Congress a state should have.
  • Every state is allocated a number of electoral votes based to the number of senators and representatives in its U.S. Congressional delegation—two votes for its senators in the U.S. Senate plus one for each of its members in the U. S. House of Representatives. Right now, CA has the largest number at 55.

Tues 6/19 – Fight with for the kids. Fight for America.

Tuesday’s (3) three actions on immigration: Call out the two terrible immigration bills, one terrible judicial nomination and the terrible guy who’s supposed to watch over refugees.

Hey, the GOP is taking our human rights ball and going home.

The administration says we’re leaving the UN Human Rights Council over “anti-Israel bias“. Apparently we’ve also had concerns over their loose criteria for membership and wanted the ability to kick countries that have egregious human rights records off the council.

Countries just like us, it seems. The expected announcement comes a day after the U.N.’s top human rights official criticized the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy.

So let’s get back to our own home-grown human rights violations!

Mon – 6/11: “Mr. President…there’s someone from the UN human rights office out in the hall…”

(Update: We are repeating this action from Friday to add in Senator Feinstein’s new bill. If you’re in her district, thank her. If you’re not, please call your senator to support it. If you haven’t made the calls listed below yet, please do so today. These are literally the most effective daily acts of resistance you can make.)

Update: Join us on June 14th, between 4 pm and 6 pm at the corner of the County Government Center for a Families Belong Together rally. More information here.

On this day, thousands of people across the US will join marches, rallies, and vigils to protest the administration’s cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers.  If you’re not in Ventura, go here for the nearest rally or march.  There’s one in Carpinteria, and one in LA.

We do not have a good history of dealing with immigrants’ children. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) reported that earlier waves of unaccompanied minors were subjected to “a pattern of intimidation, harassment, physical abuse, refusal of medical services, and improper deportation” by the US Customs and Border Patrol between 2009 and 2014 . However, since there wasn’t a lot of photographic evidence at the time, the public hadn’t understood exactly what was being done in our name.

We can’t pretend not to see what’s happening anymore. The Trump administration has supersized our problem right onto the front page by tearing kids from their sobbing mothers on film. Senator Merkley then poked the wasp nest by making a highly publicized field trip to a Southwest Key Program shelter in Brownsville, TX. Originally for unaccompanied minors, the shelter now houses kids separated from their parents who were seeking asylum at our border. (wapo) (newsweek) (slate)  We believe this video has gone viral because, even without seeing the actual interior conditions, aspects of his visit made us uneasy.
