We have a year-long “lease” for the Last-Sunday-of-the-Month Legal Aid clinic!
We will continue to help immigrants fill out their forms for citizenship, green cards and DACA renewal, selective service and even register to vote. They can continue to ask questions of volunteering immigration lawyers.
For FREE! For anyone who can get to us.
Here are the dates! Mark your calendars: 8am-3pm, 1/27, 2/24, 3/31, 4/28, 5/26, 6/30, 7/28, 8/25, 9/29, 10/27, 11/24, and 12/29. You may come for a shorter amount of time, but please be sure to carve out at least 3 hours! For new volunteers, come at 8:30.
Location: Oxnard College Marketplace & Swap Meet. We’re right in front of the student book store.
Why do this?: Because at one time, if we are descendants of immigrants, someone may have helped our families. Someone helped feed them, learn a new language, helped them get a job. Get a foothold in this wild experiment in democracy we call America.
One of the things we’ve discovered since the last presidential election is how much can be accomplished by regular concerned citizens. We also realize how lucky we are that our forebears, leaving behind starvation, desperate poverty or persecution, were able to come to America and start again, with some help from their new neighbors or relatives who had come earlier.
Therefore, we decided to do something hands-on to share a little of our own good fortune to help the newest immigrants in our community.
Are you patient? Good with detail and paperwork?
You don’t need to speak Spanish. All the paperwork is filled out in English and we always work in teams. However, we always need more Spanish speakers, and would love to have volunteers who are fluent in the Mixtec language and others as well.
New volunteers, and those of us who are a little rusty: Come at 8:30 for a 1-hour orientation.
Spread the news!: Please tell your neighbors and friends on social media about this volunteer opportunity and join us, your local Indivisible groups, amazing immigration attorneys, El Concilio, SEIU, CLUE and volunteers from everywhere, as we help people work through the government forms required to maintain or improve their legal status.
Even to become American citizens! And voters! For free. On every last Sunday of the month.
