Fire Bill Handel from KFI 640. Calling a United States Congresswoman a “Whore” is NOT ACCEPTABLE. #NeverSayWhore

This history…

Last week, we asked people to call Rep. Frederica Wilson’s office to share some kind words with her and her staff .

They’ve been swamped by negative and threatening messages for standing up to Trump. If you haven’t heard about this, click here and add your voice of support to her and her staff.

Of course, someone made it worse…

On Oct. 20th,  Los Angeles’ KFI 640 morning radio host Bill Handel called Rep. Wilson,  a “cheap, sleazy, Democrat whore” (if you can stomach listening to it: http://bit.ly/2yZ3Pi4), spreading this dangerous message of hate against Ms. Wilson. He’s contributed to the hate and death threats causing Rep. Wilson to feel too threatened to return to DC to do her job. (http://bit.ly/2id9SWp)

Let’s do something! First, contact the radio station.

Support the Honest Ads Act. It’s a first step and the very least social media giants can do.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask –
Rep. [___]  to support the Honest Ads Act – H.R. 4077
Sen. [____] to support the Honest Ads Act – S. 1989

More script if you want it: Holding online political ads to the same standard as ads published through other media is a critical first step in safeguarding our democracy and preventing foreign interference in elections.

But that’s just a beginning. Add this: We would like the bill to be amended to include tough identification rules and cut off anonymous and semi-anonymous payment methods for advertisers. When the platforms are recognized as publishers, it should become impossible to broadcast content anonymously, without the author’s true, verified identity being known at least to the platforms themselves; it should also be impossible to buy an ad in the U.S. without a U.S. bank account. (Bloomberg). The law should be revisited regularly to keep up with new types of interference methods.

Protect Mueller from a Trump tantrum. YES on H.R. 3771 & S. 1735.

HOUSE

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Rep. [___]  to support H.R. 3771 – “The Special Counsel Independence Protection Act”, and make a public statement that the firing of Special Counsel Mueller by Trump would be completely unacceptable.

More Script if you want it: It’s the duty of Congress to serve as a check on Trump and prevent him from sending our democracy into a tailspin.

8 people were killed by a truck in NY. 900 have been killed by gunfire in the last 30 days. We are watching.

1 month update SINCE Las Vegas Massacre (Oct. 1st):

More than 3,000 people have been shot.
(Update: From October 2–31, the nonprofit identified reports of 3,791 people shot in America.)

At least 900 of them have died.
(Update: Of those wounded, 1,195 died. The figure does not include the 58 who died during the Las Vegas mass shooting on October 1)

This is what that looks like in guns… (gray area for the dead). Each symbol represents a family torn apart, sorrow, pain, suffering and, because we are America, the incredible hardship of huge medical bills for the survivors.

This is ONE month in America.

guns 11.2

In the next few weeks, we will be bombarded by issues related to a radicalized Muslim man and his killing of 8 people with his truck. Trump will be rolling in his xenophobic mud as he tries to leverage this tragedy into more authoritarian power for himself. Fight the right-wing extremist takeover of our courts. It’s happening this week!

Minimal scriptI’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to vote NO on the judicial nominations of Amy Coney Barrett, Allison Eid, Stephanos Bibas, and Joan Larson.

More script if you want it: The judicial branch is our last defense against extremism from both the executive and legislative branches. Instead of protecting us, however, these nominees will rule against the civil rights of women, LGBTQ communities, immigrants, minorities, as well as other issues such as the environment and public access.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Rep. [___] to vote NO on HR 424  HR 717,  HR 1274, HR 2603, and HR 3131, that weaken protections of the Endangered Species Act or to exempt individual species from protection.

More script if you need it: I care about biodiversity and I’m tired of this administration putting resource development above the environment.

Venturans – Join in! Help determine new districts to bring representation to all.

CAUSE (Central Coast Alliance for a Sustainable Economy) has successfully spearheaded an effort to switch Ventura from a city-wide election model to a district-base one. District elections guarantee a voice for underrepresented neighborhoods like the Westside, leading to more diverse leadership at City Hall. While one in three Ventura residents is a person of color, Ventura has never had a non-white city councilmember, an issue that’s put us in violation of the California Voting Rights Act.

However, there are other benefits of using districts. By reducing the size of a voting area, the cost of running for office is greatly reduced, making it possible for more people to consider running for local office. It currently costs an average of $18,000 to win a seat on Ventura City Council, as candidates must pay to run expensive citywide advertisements. Districts bring elections down to the neighborhood level, promoting grassroots democracy. District elections also keep our representatives more accountable to listening to their neighbors instead of wealthy interests.

So, now the mapping of the districts begins and this is where you come in. We can help place the lines of the seven new districts.

Here’s the city’s link: https://www.cityofventura.ca.gov/districtelections

There are paper maps you can download, interactive maps and an on-line district-drawing tool. Also, attend the public hearings (hearing dates
