This Week in Resistance – “Snatch a knot in their Ass” Edition

(Awesome picture from 2007 Bethesda Softworks, LLC. No, this is not real)

Yes, we can take a well-earned minute to glory in the GOP’s healthcare debacle in the Senate Thursday night. But not for long, as it was a very close vote. 49 senators voted against all decency and humanity to risk destroying our healthcare system, people’s lives and a major part of our economy.

Our President has vowed to destroy any bits of Obamacare that survived this vote, while his minions work tirelessly to dismantle every aspect of our government and sell off its parts to the highest or most well-connected bidders.

But that’s business as usual…at least, for one of his businesses.

In addition to learning a sprightly new phrase from Georgia Congressman Buddy Carter, who spent, good god, a whole 27.5 hours working on this healthcare thing, let’s talk about what happened this week…

As Senator Murkowski said, “She did not come to Washington to hurt people.” Let’s thank her.

Thanks to three Republican women senators, Obamacare might just survive the GOP’s campaign to repeal it. The fight is not over, so keep calling our own senators with words of encouragement in this fight, but let’s thank these women for their courage to stand up against their own party and for wanting to see something better for their constituents and the rest of us.

How much toxic waste inside of your kids is OK? Insist on protections!

In the fall of 2015, the EPA finalized a rule which set federal limits on the amount of toxic metals that may be allowed in power plant wastewater; wastewater which, in turn, is then dumped into our nation’s water resources. However, it looks like the Trump administration, with Scott Pruitt at the helm of the EPA, is looking to delay the compliance deadlines for the rule.

The public comment period runs ends tomorrow at 11:59 pm, so let the EPA know right away that we do not want the compliance date to be moved back.

Provide Comments to Dept. of the Interior. Save our Channel Islands!

Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary is on the hit list for possible elimination by the Trump Administration. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said he envisions “dozens of offshore oil platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel, but first we have to remove the overly strict regulations imposed as a result of the protected marine sanctuary“. The process has started.

Provide your comments through this link before July 26, 2017.

USA is Not for Sale – Thank our MoC for insisting Trump complies with the emoluments clause

Because Trump refuses to divest himself of his business holdings or fully disclose his conflicts of interest to Congress, 196 members of congress have filed a lawsuit to force Trump to comply with the emoluments clause in the constitution.  Let’s take some time today to thank Representative [Carbajal/Brownley], who has signed on to the lawsuit.

 (Write your District Representative)

Rep. Julia Brownley 300 E. Esplanade Drive, Suite 470, Oxnard, CA, 93036 or juliabrownley.house.gov

Rep. Salud Carbajal 360 S. Hope Ave, Suite C-301, Santa Barbara, CA, 93105 or carbajal.house.gov

Let’s Thank Our People for Doing the Right Thing!

Our legislators stepped up, so let’s thank them. They’re cosponsoring the Equality Act (S.1006/ HR 2282)!

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents discrimination because of race, skin color, sex, religion, and national origin. However, it does not cover sexual orientation or gender identity. In 30 states, LGBTQ people can legally be fired, harassed at work, barred from businesses and denied housing because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Let’s fix this now!
Script for Senators: I’m writing to thank Sen.  (___) for cosponsoring S.1006. It’s shameful that in the twenty first century, it’s still legal to discriminate against other Americans. It’s time that all people can feel safe and respected in their own country.

Script for Representatives: I’m writing to thank Rep.  (___) for cosponsoring HR 2282. It’s shameful that in the twenty first century, it’s still legal to discriminate against other Americans. It’s time that all people can feel safe and respected in their own country.
