Tues. 2/20 – DACA & immigration – fast actions and information update

“The image of America deporting fellow Americans is not something this country or the Republican Party want to see unfolding every night on the national and local news.”
Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), a top champion of Dreamer relief

Action #1: Call your Rep. and Senators to give them support to do the right thing. Contact information at the bottom of this post.

Sample Script: I am calling from [zip code] to ask Rep. [___] and Senator [___] to continue opposing any DACA bill that includes Trump’s racistfour pillars” immigration plan. Oh, and please don’t confirm Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan.

Action #2: Be part of the resistance network. Print out these flyers in English and Spanish for this DACA renewal clinic and post them in public spaces, and/or send them digitally to friends and organizations who can get them to those in need. Spanish, English Continue reading “Tues. 2/20 – DACA & immigration – fast actions and information update”

Thursday 2/15 – Direct from the national Indivisible Team

Dear Indivisibles,

Monday night, the Senate voted 97-1 for cloture on Motion to Proceed (that’s Hill speak for beginning the process to vote on legislation) on an immigration bill. And this morning, they voted on the Motion to Proceed, so we’re headed into debate about what will go into the final bill.

The full bill and amendments haven’t been released, but the one-page framework released by Republicans yesterday shows us that Republicans aren’t serious about finding a solution for DACA recipients or a bipartisan compromise. The Republican proposal is a racist bill written by white supremacists to use Dreamers as bargaining chips to advance a draconian anti-immigrant agenda.

Here’s what you should know about the Republican proposal: Continue reading “Thursday 2/15 – Direct from the national Indivisible Team”

Good news for DACA!

NILC email header

Immigrant youth won today.

Our plaintiffs, along with co-counsel at Make the Road New York and Yale Law School’s Worker and Immigrant Rights Advocacy Clinic, asked the court to help protect Dreamers, and today we got our wish: a federal court has rejected President Trump’s rationale for ending DACA and put in place another important block to protect Dreamers.

This means that anyone who had DACA in the past must be allowed to re-apply for DACA.

This ruling is particularly important as the arbitrary March 5th deadline that resulted in the crisis President Trump created is right around the corner.

Now all eyes turn to the Supreme Court as it decides whether it will take on a separate case regarding Trump’s DACA termination. It is likely that the Trump administration may appeal rapidly to the Supreme Court in an effort to take away this victory from our plaintiffs and all immigrant youth across the country.

This case is a testament to the bravery of Dreamers like our plaintiffs — this decision wouldn’t have happened if not for their courage to stand up for their rights. Continue reading “Good news for DACA!”

Monday 2/12 – Dreamers, ICE and Debt collectors

IMMIGRATION – Monday 2/12

#1. Time is Running Out: Fix DACA for Dreamers Now

The most recent government shutdown resolution failed to protect Dreamers.  DACA deportation protection will end on March 5 if Congress fails to act.

Minimal Script: I am calling from [zip code] to ask Rep./Sen. [___], to voice my strong support for a clean Dream Act. Don’t waste our money on a wall, and tell the GOP that reunification is what “pro-family” actually looks like.

Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

or Rep. Salud Carbajal: (CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

and Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884

#2. Let’s put a “restraining order” on ICE.

Thursday 2/1 – Dreamers (the REAL ones), Russia Sanctions, Stealing tips.

“Politics” used to be voting in the right candidate, then just sitting back on our couches watching TV, and waiting for good things to happen.

If that were ever true, it isn’t like that now. Now it’s about our calls.

“I bring back the Groundhog Day pic from time to time because, let’s face it, some of these calls feel incredibly repetitive. We’ve been asking for the same stuff for months. Agh!

The aides I talk to every day, though, tell me repeatedly how important it is that we keep calling, and keep making the same asks over and over. “We definitely need to keep hearing from you,” they tell me.

And I’m pretty sure there are 800,000 Dreamers out there who also hope we don’t run out of steam. So let’s not.” (Jessica Craven)

Action #2 – Call for a clean Dream Act and Health Centers

Tuesday – “The morning after” Edition – DACA, Net Neutrality for CA, & bumpstocks.

Good News… CHIP is finally funded for the next 6 years!

Bad news…

The DREAMERS, Community Health Centers Fund (CHCF) and disaster relief for Puerto Rico were not included in the joy.

Even worse news… DACA’s fate is now dependent on Mitch McConnell.

Show up for DACA! #DreamActNow

The administration saturated media and email with messages that Democrats put DACA above sick kids, despite the truth that they caused this havoc themselves by prioritizing battles over our healthcare and their tax-scam, running the clock out. But, like Trump himself, the truth seems to be the last thing people hear.

This article lays out the four ways this fight can go.

So now we go into action. A) Call – Scripts below. B) Tweet at them as well, C) Visit their offices, and D) Donate what we can to United We Dream to support the Dreamers who have been demonstrating, protesting, lobbying etc. in D.C. and will continue to do so.

Update on Feinstein’s stand here. Listing of all the Democrats who didn’t stand firm here.

Minimal Script for Senators: I am calling from [zip code] to tell Sen. [___] that we are  angry about the Senate Democrats’ failure to use their power to protect DACA. We want a clean DREAM vote, without any ineffectual and money-wasting sideshows like Trump’s wall or cruel anti-family measures.

Minimal script for Representatives: I’m calling from [zip code] to tell Rep. [__]  to support a clean DREAM Act and reject Trump’s demands to include massive, unnecessary spending on border security to the bill, especially his fever-dream of a wall.

More script for both if you need it: It is unfair and immoral to use the lives of hundreds of thousands of young DACA recipients as bargaining chips to score political gains.
