Stand in Solidarity on May Day: Vote Yes on California Sanctuary State Bill!

Local California law enforcement must not cooperate with draconian ICE roundups. Resist the Trump agenda, California style.  This is a human rights crisis and we need to participate.

Call State Assembly Member Monique Limón (representing Santa Barbara, Ventura, Oxnard): Sacramento: (916) 319-2037, Santa Barbara: (805) 564-1649, Ventura: (805) 641-3700

If outside of these areas, find your Representatives here.

Script: I’m  a constituent of Monique Limón, whom I’m calling to vote yes on S.B. 54. State resources should not be used to assist federal authorities in tracking, rounding up and deporting our law-abiding and non-violent immigrant neighbors or separating parents from their children. Thank you!

Important! Monique Limon’s office has gotten more “NO” than “YES” calls for this bill!  Please call or email Monique Limon today!

The History of May Day and Why/Where we can March in Solidarity with our Local Immigrants

We take our collective hats off to anyone that learns English as a second language…

Let’s consider the phrase “May Day”: If the space between the words were to become lost, it becomes an expression of distress.

maypole
How one thing is NOT like the other: Children with a Maypole…

If you were a child of the 60’s, May Day was the strange yearly ritual that required your whole class being assembled around a May pole, each of you clutching an attached ribbon, ready to find out which one of your classmates didn’t understand the concept of weaving in and out.

However, the “May Day” we’re interested in this Monday is the one known as “International Worker’s Day”, to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket Riot in Chicago.  You can read about the Haymarket Riot here.

haymarket
… and the announcement for the Haymarket Rally

Its story started with thousands of overworked and underappreciated immigrants (in this case, Germans and Bohemians) unionizing and striking for an eight hour workday.

What started as peaceful protests ended in disaster, with a massacre of both police and workers and a trial that ended with four innocent men being executed.

The story marks the subsequent growth of labor unions and May 1, 1886, as the date the eight hour work day we take for granted became standard, an improvement paid for by the deaths of over a dozen people.

Now as we live in a time of diminishing unions and workdays that never seem to end, we still will march for our immigrants.

All of us. Todos Nosotros.

Here are some places to go to support our local immigrants on May 1…

Oxnard: “Day Without An Immigrant/Dia Sin Inmigrantes” Shut It Down
March and Rally starting at Plaza Park, 500 S. “C” St., at 12 noon.

Santa Barbara: “Day Without an Immigrant”

Los Angeles: “May Day March and Rally”

Here’s the May Day call to action from California Teacher Association for Ventura County. Continue reading “The History of May Day and Why/Where we can March in Solidarity with our Local Immigrants”

NO on TrumpCare 2.0: The revised bill is so bad that GOP legislators are trying to exempt themselves!

The revised health care bill is so bad that GOP legislators are trying to exempt themselves from its provisions.

The new healthcare plan with the MacArthur amendment takes all that was bad in the ACHA and makes it worse, removing protections that make insurance affordable for people with preexisting conditions, and not requiring plans to cover “essential benefits”, like prescription drugs. This plan is so bad that even GOP legislators are trying to exempt themselves from it.

Script: I’m calling to ask (____) to call out the AHCA with the MacArthur amendment as a very bad deal for us, so bad, in fact, that GOP legislators have exempted themselves from its provisions.

No tax returns, No tax reform (2 of 2)

Donald Trump, how much money would you personally save from your tax “reform”?

Even without going into the details of Donald Trump’s tax plan, which Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin calls “the biggest tax cut and largest tax reform in history of this country”, it’s clear that Trump and other big corporate interests will benefit “BIGLY.” How much? Unknown, and unacceptable. This is a huge conflict of interest. NO TAX RETURN, NO TAX CUTS!

Script: I’m calling to ask (___) to oppose any proposed tax reforms from Trump until he releases his tax returns. We’re tired of paying a higher percentage of taxes than he does! No tax returns, no tax reforms.

April is Sexual Violence Awareness Month and Congress wants to defund programs that protect women! (1 of 2)

Say NO to defunding any Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) programs. VAWA has made significant progress helping victims of domestic & date violence, sexual assault, elder abuse and stalking achieve justice and safety, with federally federally funded direct services such as shelter, rape crisis services, legal assistance, and counseling.

[And when you’re done calling, do a happy dance to celebrate the end of Bill O’Reilly’s run at Fox News.]

OREILLLY-fired

Script: I’m calling to ask (_____) to stand against any attempt to defund the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). It was passed with bipartisan support and has been incredibly effective in saving lives and money.

Say No to HUD budget cuts: Budget cuts should not be on the backs of the poorest Americans!

Trump has proposed $6.2 billion in cuts to Housing and Urban Development (HUD), slashing funding for Community Development Block Grants, public housing, housing vouchers, and programs serving the homeless. These are essential programs for those most in need of help, including veterans, the disabled, seniors, working poor, and youth aging out of foster care.

Script: I’m calling (____) to reject any cuts in HUD funding that increases homelessness. People will actually die from these cuts, and our emergency services will be overwhelmed. Instead of paying for our jetsetting President to golf or campaign, let’s invest in helping our own.

Say No to EPA Budget Cuts: A 31% cut threatens jobs, national security and the environment

Trump says he’s committed to America’s jobs and national security, but his proposed 31% slash to the EPA budget threatens both. Eliminating 3,200 jobs, supporting fossil fuels over renewable energy, eliminating the popular Energy Star program, and preventing hazardous waste cleanup and the ability to prosecute those responsible does not make America great.

Script: I’m calling (_____) to stand against any attempt to defund the EPA. We need to know that the quality of our air, and water are protected, we get the information we need to buy wisely and that toxic chemicals are being eliminated from our environment.

Trump must not be allowed to use millions of people’s health insurance as a bargaining chip to fund his stupid wall

Don’t hold the ACA hostage: The ACA offsets the costs that insurance companies incur insuring low-income enrollees.  Trump is threatening to withhold these payments unless Congress passes a budget that funds his border wall with Mexico.  Holding the health insurance of millions of Americans hostage is not an acceptable way to fund this wall, or anything else for that matter.

Script: I’m calling to ask (_____) to reject any deal that involves holding the ACA hostage in return for funding the border wall that Mexico was supposed to pay for in the first place.

Creating a Resistance Self Care Plan

A gentle guide for passionate souls

By Jen Hofmann

Self care is a radical way to resist because it fuels your efforts to defend democracy, giving you energy and strength. Self care has deep roots in the 60’s civil rights movement and 70’s women’s liberation movement. The goal of self care is to cultivate internal resourcefulness—no matter what’s happening in the world around you. When we’re resourceful, we win. Self care starts with making choices.

Demand Congressional Approval for Any Military Intervention

Trump needs the approval of Congress before undertaking military actions in Syria, North Korea, or elsewhere. There’s been no meaningful debate on whether America’s national interest requires military action against ISIS, Syria or North Korea, what the strategy should be, or at what point domestic priorities should prevail. It’s time for that discussion.

Script: I’m calling to remind (—) that Trump needs to ask permission from Congress before starting new wars. There’s a reason we require oversight between government branches.
