Fri – 2/15: One more chance to comment on Betsy’s effort to disembowel Title IX. Deadline tonight, 11:59 EST.

Due to a glitch somewhere in the system, we get one more opportunity to flood comments into the regulation website against Betsy’s DeVos’ dismantlement of Title IX!!!

Action – Write another comment! Save Title IX from Betsy DeVos. Save kids and young adults. Comments due by 11:59 EST tonight.

Title IX is a civil rights law that bans gender-based discrimination in primary, secondary, and higher education. In 2011, the Obama Administration issued a “Dear Colleague” letter, which specified that sexual harassment, assault, stalking, and other forms of gender-based violence interfere with a student’s right to equal educational opportunities and are therefore covered under the Act.

The letter also provided guidance on how schools should comply with federal law and survivor advocacy groups stated that it was a significant step toward reducing gender-based violence on college campuses. After meeting with extremist men’s rights groups, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos proposed changes that would reverse these guidelines, make it harder for survivors to come forward, strip Title IX protection from many them, and allow schools to raise the standard of proof required for sexual harassment and assault to that required of criminal cases.

This is your last day to comment on Secretary’s plans here until 11:59 pm EST. Or do it here. Or here.

Thu 2/14: FAKE National Emergency, in progress now.

Quote is from this article. Read to understand the scope of this issue.

Right after El Chapo’s trial made it completely clear how useless a border wall would be, right after both New Mexico and California withdrew their guard troops as unnecessary, and in the face of a spending bill that reflected that reality, our president has decided to take a huge authoritarian leap forward with a declaration of a national emergency. This is a deliberate end run around Congress and our country’s system of checks and balances, all to appease his voting base.

Action – Tell our legislators to vote immediately for a resolution of disapproval to stop Trump’s revenge move.

Under the National Emergencies Act of 1976, the president can declare an emergency for just about anything. However, Congress gave itself the ability to terminate an emergency declaration. It’s only been tried once, when President George W. Bush tried to use an “emergency” to override federal wage requirements for government contractors rebuilding after Katrina. While the lawsuits against the administration are warming up…

 Dust it off!

Wed 2/13: Barr and Yemen. Time to call again.

Today, we’re re-visiting some older actions…Partial good news on Action #1.

Action #1 –  Is there a minimum quota of deaths for war crimes? Asking for a friend…

Before the Nazi death camps were revealed to the American public, there were sporatic public protests to legislators to help Jews in Germany.

Historians agree on factual explanations why most American protests against Nazism in 1933 died down within a few months…. Isolationism, economic concerns, racism, and antisemitism all led most Americans to focus on domestic problems rather than international ones. Reflecting the mood and situation of the country, State Department officers interpreted America’s restrictive immigration laws even more stringently, leaving the quotas far from filled. Nazi Germany owed American banks billions of dollars, and the Roosevelt administration was unwilling to issue a protest, in part because of the risk that Hitler would cancel his country’s debts. Nazi Germany was a sovereign nation, and most Americans did not consider intervention in Germany’s treatment of its own citizens the role of the United States.

We can, with our modern technology, now watch a country’s people being annihilated in real time. Nearly 76% of the population of Yemen is in need of humanitarian aid. Food. Clean water. Medical care and supplies. Men are dying. Women. Children. Babies. The immigration issue of 1933 – we now have a similar travel ban stopping Yemenis from coming here, dividing families. Those already here under TPS status are now on an 18 month countdown until they are thrown back into hell.

Tues 2/12: Cocktail-hour comments – Tell HHS why HIPAA privacy rights should be protected. Deadline tonight!

(From Indivisible San Francisco)

Action:  Stop Erosion of HIPAA Patient Healthcare Rights — Deadline TONIGHT, by 11:59 pm EST.

HHS has proposed changes to HIPAA under the guise of “easing regulations,” so that patients diagnosed with serious mental illness (SMI) or opioid use disorder (OUD) could have their medical records released without their consent.

Post a comment with the HHS opposing this change by 11:59 EST  TONIGHT, Feb. 12th!

Sample Comment

“I strongly oppose the proposed changes to HIPAA because the proposed changes extend far beyond the known benefits of coordinated care and will make patient healthcare less safe. [LIST ADDITIONAL PERSONAL OR POLICY REASONS WHY YOU FEEL HIPPA SHOULD BE PROTECTED. THEY SHOULD BE UNIQUE TO YOU.]

[Insert reason why you or a family member or a friend might be negatively impacted by the changes to the rules. Or insert a personal story.]

I urge you to not change existing HIPAA regulations on patient confidentiality.”

Tues- 2/12: The civil rights apocalypse is coming. Stop Trump’s nominees!

Quote from SCOTUS dissenting opinion

Update: It’s already here…

“Orderly and secure fashion” v. 1st amendment rights: The SCOTUS case involving Domineque Ray, a Muslim death row inmate and his request for an iman at his side during his execution should have been an easy lift. The Alabama Dept. of Corrections’ policy banning all but Christian clergy (what?!) in the execution chamber is blatantly unconstitutional. Alabama knew Ray’s faith since he was first imprisoned. Ray, however, didn’t learn of their exclusionary policy until a date arbitrarily decided to be “too late”. On a 5-4 vote, the Federalist Society members of the court put a state’s interest in keeping a tidy schedule over the 1st amendment rights of a minority prisoner. No matter what your views on capital punishment, or Ray’s guilt, this is a dangerous swipe against religious equality.

Action: Call against these judicial nominees!

Last Thursday, the Judiciary Committee advanced the nominations of 44 of Trump’s nominees to the main Senate floor. creep through the Judiciary Committee like a slow-growing cancer.  You may think this issue doesn’t concern you because they don’t represent your area. Think indivisible, people! It’s within these horrors that Trump will be looking for his next Kavanaugh. We are all connected! CALL!

Mon – 2/11: Nationwide call to action from Indivisible – Call on the wall issue today! Ring their phones off the hook.

Action – “But I’ve already done it!” Do it again today!

Talks are stalled, but it looks like the Dems are waffling on a $2 billion “partial wall” compromise with our tax money.
Option #1:  We just dig a really big pit and thrown money into it, because that’s how effective a traditional border wall is…
Option #2: We pick what’s been behind the curtain since 2017, which is when Rep. Will Hurd, a Republican from Texas, put out a bill advocating a fiber-optic security system at the border, one that would also provide broadband access to nearby rural communities.

Fri – 2/8: Call today on the wall issue and make sure you’re heard.

Action – Call today! We are running out of time.

A conference committee made of members of both houses is meeting this week trying to create an agreement on funding for the Department of Homeland Security for this year. They might be “done” by Monday, sending a proposed bill to both houses for a full vote.

Why would you want to toss billions of dollars on a useless project that would have absolutely zero impact? Zero impact. … It’s not going to stop anything. They’ll tunnel. They’ll punch holes in it and put French doors with stained glass on that wall. They’ll fly over it” (with cheap drones). – Mike Vigil, former head of international operations at the Drug Enforcement Administration.
