Right after El Chapo’s trial made it completely clear how useless a border wall would be, right after both New Mexico and California withdrew their guard troops as unnecessary, and in the face of a spending bill that reflected that reality, our president has decided to take a huge authoritarian leap forward with a declaration of a national emergency. This is a deliberate end run around Congress and our country’s system of checks and balances, all to appease his voting base.

While California‘s governor and attorney general get their legal challenges tuned up…

Under the National Emergencies Act of 1976, the president can declare an emergency for just about anything. However, Congress gave itself the ability to terminate an emergency declaration. It’s only been tried once, when President George W. Bush tried to use an “emergency” to override federal wage requirements for government contractors rebuilding after Katrina. Talks are stalled, but it looks like the Dems are waffling on a $2 billion “partial wall” compromise with our tax money.
Option #1: We just dig a really big pit and thrown money into it, because that’s how effective a traditional border wall is…
Option #2: We pick what’s been behind the curtain since 2017, which is when Rep. Will Hurd, a Republican from Texas, put out a bill advocating a fiber-optic security system at the border, one that would also provide broadband access to nearby rural communities.

A conference committee made of members of both houses is meeting this week trying to create an agreement on funding for the Department of Homeland Security for this year. They might be “done” by Monday, sending a proposed bill to both houses for a full vote.

Wed – 2/6: Trump and the wall…what’s really in it for him?

Action – Call today and every day until Feb. 15th against his stupid wall.

There are so many ways over, under and around his physical wall idea, and so much proof that neither drugs nor terrorists would be stopped by it, that there has to be another reason why Trump keeps insisting on this solution. We think he smells the thing that gets him up in the morning, prepared to spend another day doing his “loser” job…

Thurs 1/31: Positive Legislation Day! 3 actions – Title IX, paying workers and keeping our government going.

Hey, while Betsy’s minions have to read through over 104-THOUSAND comments (updated 2/1 – great job, everybody!) and our legislators are arguing over how to say “wall”, let’s put out encouragement for some positive legislative actions.

Action #1 – Remind Congress to reintroduce and support pro-Title IX legislation.

There were some great laws proposed last session to protect students from harassment and arbitrary rule changes by ideologues like Secretary of Education Betsy Devos. Let’s get them reintroduced and through the system this time.

Action #1 – Thank our own senators!

Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris never waivered in the face of an out-of-control tyrant’s demands. Take a moment to tell them we appreciate what they did, and that they have our support if this happens again on Feb. 15th.

But we can’t keep governing week-to-week. The chaos and harm inflicted by this shutdown will have lasting effects – we can’t afford another one.

Thurs – 1/24: ” It’s Not a Shutdown. It’s a Right-Wing Coup.” The looting of OUR resources has already begun…

According to this powerful article from The Nation.com, what we are facing is a “liberal” government shutdown. “The military, Trump’s luxurious vacations, soft power, our bombing of seven Muslim-majority countries, NSA bulk surveillance, agencies that prop up the oil and gas industry, the CIA’s arming and funding of Syrian rebels, and the FBI’s entrapment regime will continue on, while programs important to the poor and working classes, such as libraries, tax collection, national parks, labor and safety regulators, the Small Business Administration, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (which oversees the derivatives market), environmental regulators, financial regulators, welfare, and WIC will all be shuttered.”

Well, at least partially shuttered. If a national park or refuge contains a resource that a corporate friend of the administration wants, the government will force unpaid workers to help them access it.

Action – Call your legislators and the House Natural Resource Committee to shut this down.

Minimum script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Committee [___] to call for an investigation of violations of the Antideficiency Act in regards to ALL fossil fuel and timber-related activities on public land, (including drilling, logging, permit processing, inspections, public meetings and regulatory documents) and the immediate cessation of discriminatory access for hunters until the shutdown is completely lifted. All these activities are “NON-ESSENTIAL” for the safety of human life or the protection of property. (31 U.S.C. § 1342.)

Thurs – 1/24: End the #TrumpShutdown – no extortion money for a wall – 3 Actions!

Action #1 – Join Indivisibles across the country as we call our own senators every day this week!

There will be two votes in the Senate this week, one on Trump’s anti-immigrant bill and one on a clean continuing resolution (CR) that would fund the government through Feb. 8. We need to make sure that the Senate doesn’t pay Trump’s ransom.

Meanwhile, legislators are getting swamped with calls from conservative groups who believe Trump’s lies and want his stupid wall.
