Thur – 2/7: Trump is tired of being stopped by judges. So he’s destroying our courts, one nominee at a time. CALL!

Action: Call against these judicial nominees!

Today, 40 terrible nominees who do not represent the values of the majority of Americans, will begin to creep through the Judiciary Committee like a slow-growing cancer.  You may think this issue doesn’t concern you because they don’t represent your area. Think indivisible, people! It’s within these horrors that Trump will be looking for his next Kavanaugh. We are all connected! CALL!

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Sen. [___] to know that she/he has my support to stop, in any way possible, this assembly line of inappropriate judicial nominees and the assault on the blue slip process and time periods for examining nominees.

More script if you want it (or email): All nominees with Federalist Society membership need to be opposed, but please concentrate on stopping the following: Chad Readler, Eric Murphy, Allison Rushing, Stephen Clark, Eric Miller, Daniel Collins, Kenneth Lee, and Daniel Bress.

Wed – 2/6: Trump and the wall…what’s really in it for him?

Action – Call today and every day until Feb. 15th against his stupid wall.

There are so many ways over, under and around his physical wall idea, and so much proof that neither drugs nor terrorists would be stopped by it, that there has to be another reason why Trump keeps insisting on this solution. We think he smells the thing that gets him up in the morning, prepared to spend another day doing his “loser” job…

Minimal Script. I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Sen. [___] to know in the upcoming negotiations to fully fund the government for 2019, we want four essential things: no wall, no taking border funding from domestic or social safety net programs, no cuts or blocks to legal immigration, refugee or asylum programs, and no wasting our troop’s time by militarizing the border. And a full public accounting of the contractors that met with him regarding wall construction.

Wed 2/6: Join in today in Thousand Oaks. Tell Julia we want a #GreenNewDeal!

Action 1 – National Day of Action for Real Climate Leadership

Join 350 Conejo / San Fernando Valley and our partners as we call on our Representative, Julia Brownley(CA-26) to endorse a Green New Deal and commit to a just and equitable transition to a world free from fossil fuels, support green jobs, and reject fossil fuel money.

Congresswoman Brownley has yet to take a position on the Green New Deal. We’ll deliver thousands of petition signatures from constituents and call on her to step up and be the real climate leader we need.

Today we’re gathering at Representative Brownley’s Thousand Oaks office. We’ll speak about why the Green New Deal matters to us and how she can help advance the goals of climate action, a federal jobs guarantee, reparations for the climate crisis and racial justice.

As presidential hopefuls begin to announce their candidacies and our new Congress works to define their priorities, this is a key moment to keep up the pressure for real climate leadership and a Green New Deal. We’ve already seen the power of activists mobilizing in the halls of Congress to change the future of climate politics and make the Green New Deal a possibility. Let’s keep it up!

Mon – 2/4: Update – It’s Black History Month 2019. Where are we on the monuments now?

(Picture from newspaper record of the Cornerstone Speech, by Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens. –  Indivisible Ventura originally published this post in 2017. It’s Black History Month and time for a update since the 2015 Dylan Roof massacre and the 2017 Unite the Right rally turned up the fire again. This is probably Tip #2)

“There is no question about what the civil war was about. And there is no question about the monuments to that war, because every person that was lionized in those monuments, may have been brave, they may have been strong, they may have done incredible acts of courage on the battlefield, they killed other people and maybe they gave their own lives… and they did it so they could own other human beings like chattel.

Why isn’t there a statue of Heinrich Himmler in Germany? Why isn’t there a statue of a Nazi soldier saying “Hey, he was just fighting for his country.” They have figured out something that we haven’t and one of the reasons is that they have dealt honestly with their past.” (Jeffrey Robinson, ACLU – if you haven’t watch this video, do so.)

Fri – 2/1: It’s Black History Month. It’s not at all what they taught us in school.

(Photo: Workers prepare to remove a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee from Robert E. Lee Park in Dallas, Texas, on September 14, 2017.)

In 2014, Aisha Harris posted this great article. “Let’s Fix Black History Month“. Here’s the outline of her proposal.

  • Tip #1: Go beyond the basics…Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, etc.
  • Tip #2: Don’t just “celebrate” Black History Month. Confront past and present injustices.
  • Tip #3: If you must commercialize Black History Month, at least be thoughtful about it.
  • Tip #4: As an adult, make an effort to learn something new about the black community or experience.
  • Tip #5: Repeat 1-4 all year long.

Action – Watch this amazing video (Tip #2 and #4)

Today, we’re re-posting this video with Jeffery Robinson, the ACLU’s top racial justice expert. He discusses the history of Confederate symbols across the country and outlines what we can do to learn from our past and combat systemic racism. He is an AMAZING SPEAKER and the video is filled with historical film clips.

Fri – 2/1: MORE positive actions! Bears Ears, Social Security, and voting reforms!

If you missed yesterday’s positive actions: legislatively protecting Title IX, getting government contractors back pay and stopping these destructive and expensive #TrumpShutdowns…go here. Or do them again!

Action #1 – Take back Bears Ears!

(From Jim Hines, Team Member, Sierra Club Protect Wild Utah Team)

Greetings Public Lands Activists:
Now is our chance…our legislation to restore the beautiful landscape and natural ecosystems of Bears Ears National Monument in southern Utah has just been introduced into the U.S. Hose of Representatives by our great legislative friends Congressman Gallego (D-AZ) and Congresswoman Haaland (D-NM).
HR 871 would expand the current national monument from 200,000 acres to the original designation of 1.9 million acres. After several years of hard work we were able to have President Obama designate and protect the lands of Bears Ears NM in 2019, then in 2017 President Trump reduced the size of the national monument to its present size.

Thurs 1/31: Positive Legislation Day! 3 actions – Title IX, paying workers and keeping our government going.

Hey, while Betsy’s minions have to read through over 104-THOUSAND comments (updated 2/1 – great job, everybody!) and our legislators are arguing over how to say “wall”, let’s put out encouragement for some positive legislative actions.

Action #1 – Remind Congress to reintroduce and support pro-Title IX legislation.

There were some great laws proposed last session to protect students from harassment and arbitrary rule changes by ideologues like Secretary of Education Betsy Devos. Let’s get them reintroduced and through the system this time.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep. [___] to sponsor, cosponsor and support these proposed laws:

  • H.R.4030, the Title IX Protection: (check here – Carbajal signed, Brownley didn’t)
  • H.R.6464, the HALT Sexual Violence Act  (check here – neither signed)
  • H.R.1949, the Campus Accountability and Safety Act. (check here – neither signed)

Wed. – 1/30: Today’s your last chance to comment on Betsy’s effort to disembowel Title IX.

(Graphic: from Abused by students, failed by adults: Chicago children sexually attacked by peers at school amid lax supervision.

Save Title IX from Betsy DeVos. Save kids and young adults. Comments due by 11:59 EST tonight.

Title IX is a civil rights law that bans gender-based discrimination in primary, secondary, and higher education. In 2011, the Obama Administration issued a “Dear Colleague” letter, which specified that sexual harassment, assault, stalking, and other forms of gender-based violence interfere with a student’s right to equal educational opportunities and are therefore covered under the Act.

The letter also provided guidance on how schools should comply with federal law and survivor advocacy groups stated that it was a significant step toward reducing gender-based violence on college campuses. After meeting with extremist men’s rights groups, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos proposed changes that would reverse these guidelines, make it harder for survivors to come forward, strip Title IX protection from many them, and allow schools to raise the standard of proof required for sexual harassment and assault to that required of criminal cases.

This is your last day to comment on Secretary’s plans here until 11:59 pm EST. Or do it here. Or here.
