Thurs 3/14: Thank the 12 angry GOP-sters who did the right thing…

Action – Send a postcard/email or call to thank the senators who stood up against Trump’s executive power grab.

Positive encouragement for baby steps, right? These senators will face very real consequences for crossing the president over his hoax of a border wall (H.J.Res.46/S.J.Res.10) – at the very least a meeting with him in full unhinged rage, as well as confrontations with their own angry constituents, terrorized by Trump’s xenophobic speeches. So flood ’em with love… maybe more will join them if Trump’s vetoes this!

Call/email your own people and write to ones outside your state!

“Dangerous precedence” camp:

“If there is oil, it’ll be gone in a generation. But the damage would last for thousands of years.” – Adam Kolton, executive director of the Alaska Wilderness League.

Comment: I strongly oppose any option but Alternate A – do nothing. Studying the Environmental Impact Studies, full of unverifiable assumptions and unwarranted trust in the benevolence of oil industry employees as defacto national park officials, has convinced me that there will be unmitigable damage to a national treasure. The only winners here will be politicians who can crow over delivering our refuge to a cadre of international fossil-fuel interests, who will extract as fast as they can with little oversight and walk away from the damage they leave behind.

Join in – be an ally! Youth Climate Strike this Friday, 3/15!

Find the strike nearest you here!

We, the youth of America, are striking because decades of inaction has left us with just 11 years to change the trajectory of the worst effects of climate change, according to the Oct 2018 UN IPCC Report. We are striking because our world leaders have yet to acknowledge, prioritize, or properly address our climate crisis. We are striking because marginalized communities across our nation —especially communities of color, disabled communities, and low- income communities—  are already disproportionately impacted by climate change. We are striking because if the social order is disrupted by our refusal to attend school, then the system is forced to face the climate crisis and enact change. With our futures at stake, we call for radical legislative action to combat climate change and its countless detrimental effects on the American people. We are striking for the Green New Deal, for a fair and just transition to a 100% renewable economy, and for ending the creation of additional fossil fuel infrastructure. Additionally, we believe the climate crisis should be declared a national emergency because we are running out of time.

Wed 3/13: 2 quick gun actions

Sign the petition

Action #1 – Sign this petition to stop gunshows at the VC Fairgrounds

Five gun shows are hosted every year at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, a state-owned property which is owned and managed by a division of the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Each show features hundreds of tables where firearms are bought, sold, and traded. The gun shows are also marketed to children — admission free for children under age 12.

A network of anti-gun activists, concerned about the influence that billboard marketing and the gun shows have on our communities, has asked the Ventura County Fairgrounds board to stop hosting gun shows and profiting from the proliferation of guns and ammunition.  Sign the petition here.

Action #2 – Email a letter to support AB 12 – “Firearms: gun violence restraining orders” by Rep. Jacqui Irwin.

Action #1 – Support H.R. 1146 – Arctic Cultural and Coastal Plain Protection Act

A bipartisan group of House lawmakers introduced H.R. 1146, that would ban oil and natural gas drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).”  This legislation would repeal a portion of the 2018 tax-cut that okayed such drilling.  Let’s let our reps know that we want this to pass so that that ANWR can remain a pristine environment and not be lost to greed.

Rep-check here. Brownley and Carbajal are among the 115 cosponsors, including 2 GOP.

Minimum script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want to thank Rep. [___] for cosigning H.R. 1146 – “Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Protection Act.”

Action #2 – Support H.R. 309 – Stop Arctic Ocean Drilling Act of 2019

H.R. 309 prohibits the Department of the Interior from issuing or renewing a lease or any other authorization for the exploration, development, or production of oil, natural gas, or any other mineral in the Arctic Ocean, including the Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea Planning Areas.

Rep-check here. Brownley hasn’t signed yet. Carbajal is one of 35 cosponsors.

Minimum script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want to Rep. [___] to cosign H.R. 309 – “Stop Arctic Ocean Drilling Act of 2019.”

Mon – 3/11: We are Tucker-ed out. Put on your super hero capes, pull out your keyboards and phones and ask corporate America to step up.

(Quote from here.)

Action #1 – Use your power for good. Stop the financial machine behind the privitization of imprisonment.

Good news for resistors! You have power in the commercial world. Constant public pressure has caused JPMorgan Chase to announce that the bank would no longer finance private-prison and immigrant-detention companies. Others, like Wells Fargo, Bank of America and SunTrust are now up to bat.

Thank JPMorgan Chase, and have a email chat with the others here at backersofhate.org.

Action #2 – Use your power for good. Stop the financial machine behind the voices of hate.

In December of last year, Tucker Carlson, climate-change denier, Trump-apologist and “open-minded” racist, went on an anti-immigrant rant that included “immigrants make the United States country poor and dirtier and more divided.” He lost at least 26 advertisers over it. (For comparison, Bill O’Reilly left after 60 advertisers pulled out due to public pressure over his sexual harrassment settlements.)

Media Matters has recently released a full transcription of Carlson’s misogynistic and statutory rape-positive discussions with Bubba the Love Sponge, a popular shock jock radio program, that occurred between 2006 to 2011. His comments even shocked his hosts at the time, and now we can all read them, inspiring the next FOX toxic personality boycott.

UPDATE: more audio here, with racist and homophobic language. Truly a man for all seasons.

Fri – 3/8: What’s wrong with this picture? Say “YES” to CA’s AB-1080/SB 54.

Action 1 – No, no, it’s not the cucumbers…(They’re great!)

This is the season for articles on what to give up for Lent. This year, instead 40 days without chocolate, alcohol or binge-watching TV shows, many churches are asking their parishioners to give up single-use plastic, some even specifying different types each week, like shopping bags, drinking straws, water bottles, styrofoam  and food wrappers. In the secular world, Trader Joe’s announced in February’s Fearless Flyer, that they will be taking more steps to reduce plastic and other packaging waste due to increasing customer criticism for their perceived “overuse of packaging,” especially in the produce section. (See cucumbers, above.)

Why is plastic in the news everywhere? Because China has CUT US OFF! The recycling giant isn’t taking our plastic recyclables anymore, or anyone else’s – nearly half of the world’s excess plastic waste. So what is the US going to do about our little 4000-shipping-containers-A-DAY plastic trash habit?  Although 2018’s Earth Day motto was a warning about plastics pollution, we hadn’t hit bottom yet. We need to make changes fast, beyond bags and straws, and CA can lead the way.

Environmental groups (see below) are supporting AB-1080SB 54 – “California Circular Economy and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act.” It will address the collapse of foreign recycling markets by reducing solid waste generation, encourage transition to compostable or recyclable materials, and foster domestic recycling markets. Businesses selling products into California would also have to comply with our packaging requirements, spreading the benefits to our environment beyond state lines. And beyond our own well-being as well. Nobody wants a future filled with animals trapped, entangled, starved or poisoned by our plastic waste.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code and I want Senator/Assemblymember [____] to follow and support AB-1080SB 54 – “California Circular Economy and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act.” This is a really important issue for the future of California.

Continue reading “Fri – 3/8: What’s wrong with this picture? Say “YES” to CA’s AB-1080/SB 54.”

Fri – 3/8: The real immigration tragedy at our border. We can’t look away. 3 actions.

It’s not drugs or human smuggling and its solution is not a wall.

Action #1 – Make this call. Tell your friends to do it too.

An urgent message from Team Al Otro Lado! Of the 29 families that we turned in at the Calexico port of entry this past Saturday, 13 are still being held! These parents were separated from their children and then deported from the U.S. without them. We need your help putting the pressure on Immigration And Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release these families so that they may be reunified with their children immediately! Call/tweet ICE today to demand their release! 1-855-681-1349.

Minimal script: I’m calling today to ask you (Ken Smith of ICE) to release the 13 asylum-seeking families still being held in Calexico immediately to reunite with their children. Continue reading “Fri – 3/8: The real immigration tragedy at our border. We can’t look away. 3 actions.”

Thurs – 3/7: Dear Senator McConnell… America is waiting for H.R.l. (Call your senators!)

Action – Call your senator and tell them that we don’t accept McConnell’s edict.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Sen. [___] to tell Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that your constituents aren’t accepting corruption-as-usual nonsense anymore and to bring H.R. 1 to the floor for a vote.

Come on, Senator McConnell…

We’ve written some of the big points so a 5th grader could explain them to you. Tell us why you won’t bring the anti-corruption bill that America is waiting for to a vote.
If you want more “grownup” references, here’s a quick overview of H.R.1, an easy-to-read section-by-section breakdown and the bill’s full text.
Link to McConnell’s statements here.

(Here are its supporters in the House. If your rep. isn’t listed, call them along with your senators. Contact information for legislators at the bottom. Thank Carbajal and Brownley for being cosponsors!)
