Time to pay attention to state bills!

Legislation is rushing through both CA chambers’ for their floor votes, and as usual, some great bills are being crushed and some turds are floating to the top. Time to amplify the voices of our allies! We’ve made the calls as short as possible and yes, you can combine them.

  • Action #1: BRADY – Call for better gun laws!
  • Action #2: SIERRA CLUB – Two “YES” and one “NO!”
  • Action #3: PRO-Choice California – Push all thirteen bills through.
  • Action #4: “Best intentions” meets the internet to make a horrible baby!

Action #1: BRADY – Call for better gun laws!

(From Ruth Borenstein, Brady California Legislative and Policy Chair) “These four bills are evidence-based solutions that will protect public safety and save lives… Ghost guns pose one of the greatest threats to our communities: They are unserialized, fully-functioning firearms that require NO background check. Because they’re so easy to obtain, they’ve proliferated across California and have been used in deadly acts of violence, including the tragic Saugus High School shooting and in everyday acts of gun violence.

Minimal script for assemblymember: Minimal script for assemblymember: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Assemblymember [____] to vote “YES” on the following 3 bills that will protect public safety and save lives: [You don’t have to say the parts in (…)]

  • (AB-1621) Firearms: unserialized firearms (Bans “ghost guns” and the parts and kits to build them)
  • (AB-1594) Firearms: civil suits (Gives gun violence victims and survivors the chance to hold irresponsible gun industry actors accountable in court) (Sen. Limón was a coauthor)
  • (AB-2552) Firearms: gun shows and events. (Enhance oversight at California gun shows)

Minimal script for your state senator: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator [___] to vote “YES” on (SB 1384) Firearms: dealer requirements. (Strengthen gun dealer standards and security)

Action #2: SIERRA CLUB – Two “YES” and one “NO!”

Together, these three bills will influence whether California makes progress towards reducing air pollution and meeting our Climate goals or weakens environmentally protective policies.
You don’t have to say the blue text in (…)

Minimal script for your state senator: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator [___] to vote “YES” on:

  • (SB 1173) Public retirement systems: fossil fuels: divestment.(This bill would prohibit the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) from investing in fossil fuel companies, and require that they divest any current investments by 2030.) (Full post here)(Read more here)
  • (SB 1314) Oil and gas: Class II injection wells: enhanced oil recovery. (This bill, authored by our own Sen. Limón, would address the fossil fuel industry’s harmful pollution practices by prohibiting enhanced oil recovery using captured carbon, which can leak and continue to harm communities.)(Read more here)

and “NO” on the environmentally destructive bill (SB 1393) Energy: appliances: local requirements. (This bill will inhibit cities’ ability to pass climate-friendly building codes that require the replacement of polluting fossil fuel appliances with zero-emission electric alternatives. The bill would add burdensome requirements and unnecessary oversight to cities’ building code update processes, preventing them from retiring outdated and polluting technology.)

Action #3: PRO-Choice California – Push all thirteen bills through.

With the U.S. Supreme Court poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, California’s role in the fight for reproductive freedom has never been more important. That’s why NARAL and our allies formed the California Future of Abortion Council, whish is supporting a legislative package of 13 bills to ensure that California continues to live up to our designation as a Reproductive Freedom State. Together they accomplish:

  • Addresses cost barriers and stabilizes our provider network by reimbursing abortion providers who provide care to patients facing financial barriers
  • Provides direct practical support to patients seeking abortion care
  • Addresses California’s provider shortage by increasing training opportunities and ensuring we are investing in a diverse workforce
  • Provides legal protections for abortion patients, providers, and supporting organizations and individuals
  • Addresses misinformation and disinformation and ensures access to medically accurate, culturally relevant, and inclusive education about abortion

Minimal script for your state senator/assemblymember: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator/Assemblymember [___] to vote “YES” on ALL 13 bilsl created by the California Future of Abortion Council.

Action #4: “Best intentions” meets the internet to make a horrible baby!

OMG! Seriously!?! (SB-1480) Remote accessible vote by mail systems. This bill would direct all counties to immediately allow voters with a qualifying disability to return ballots by facsimile. Virtually all fax transmission today is done over the Internet, which is inherently unsafe. Transmitting ballots by fax is Internet voting, and the ballots will be vulnerable to online attacks, such as forged voter credentials, malware, viruses, trojan horses, denial of service attacks, spoofing attacks, loss of privacy and voter coercion through automated vote buying and selling schemes.

This is such a profoundly bad idea, that even the Department of Homeland Security has warned against doing it, stating that we should stick with the paper ballot system we have and utilize our existing Remote Accessible Vote by Mail (RAVBM) service – which delivers a blank ballot electronically to the voter so they may use their own assistive technology at home to mark their ballot, print it out and return the paper ballot to their elections office.

Minimal script for your state senator/assemblymember: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator/Assemblymember [___] to vote “NO” on (SB-1480) Remote accessible vote by mail systems.
