Mon. 5/14: Environmental actions in the House! 3 calls and one written action.

Call for each action separately (more accurate) or combine them. 5 minutes total max!

#1 – “NO” on H.R.4239 – “SECURE American Energy Act”. Migratory birds vs. Exxon and friends…

The Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), enacted 100 years ago, helps protect over 1,000 species of birds from unauthorized hunting, toxic waste, wind turbines, oil spills, and other industrial threats.  The MBTA has been an effective tool to hold oil and gas industries (such as BP in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster) accountable for the deaths of over a million birds.  However, Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) has proposed an amendment into HR 4239, a larger (and very troubling) energy bill, that will gut this landmark legislation and shield corporations and industries from being held financially accountable for actions that negligently kill and injure wild birds.

Minimum Script: I am calling from [zip code] to urge Rep. [___] to vote “NO”  on HR 4239.

More script if you want it: I strongly oppose the gutting of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act by the Cheney amendment contained in HR 4239 and urge the strengthening of protections of our migratory bird populations.

#2 – “NO” on H.R. 2  –  Hey! What part of “farming” is starving kids? Oil drilling on AG Conservation lands? Poisoning water? Killing endangered species?

Thurs. 4/26 – War on the Poor – Part 2 – Cutting their food…

The Farm Bill, H.R. 2, is a GOP trifecta. It hurts the poor, it helps big business and it harms the environment.

#1 – It hurts the most vulnerable amongst us.

This guy looks like a dry speaker, but this video is pretty riveting.

We will be dealing with real hunger and the health and social issues that chronic malnutrition brings. The 2018 Farm Bill, HR2, cuts close to $20 billion from SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs). Close to two-thirds of SNAP participants are children, elderly, or disabled, while the remainder, mostly low-wage workers, are more likely than other workers to experience periods of unemployment or see their monthly earnings drop. Proposed changes enforcing stricter work requirements will be devastating to veterans, teenagers aging out of foster care, the chronically homeless and the mentally and physically disabled who will need to “prove” they are unable to work in order to eat. The work requirement age limit will also increase from 50 to 60, despite the AARP’s warning that this group has difficulty getting meaningful work. Those who violate the work requirements would become ineligible for SNAP benefits for a 1 year, with subsequent violations resulting in a 3-year loss of benefits. In addition, over a quarter million young children will lose their free school lunches. Anti-hunger groups and others say will lead to 1.6 million people losing the essential but extremely modest safety net that currently provides about $1.40 per person per meal. American citizens will be going hungry, in the richest nation in the world. (If you haven’t read it yet, take a moment to read the Poor People’s Campaign’s “Declaration of Fundamental Rights“.) Save the Clean Power Plan – Deadline Jan. 16

The EPA intends to end the Clean Power Plan. First though, they will have to successfully repeal it, thereby deregulating power plants and slashing environmental protections. Post a comment protesting the EPA’s proposed repeal of the Clean Power Plan before January Jan 16 2018, at 11:59 PM ET . Link to comment form.

Sample Written Script (try to mix it up a little):   I strongly oppose the revoking of the Clean Power Plan by the EPA. The Clean Power Plan, the centerpiece of recent climate change regulation, is intended to slash carbon emissions from power plants. It should not be repealed or replaced only strengthened. Climate change is not “fake news” it is the scientifically verified future of the planet. Ending the Clean Power Plan is a crime against that future. The role of the EPA is not to boost the economy of the fossil fuel industry; it is to protect the environment. Do your job.
