Fri – 1/18: The “Phone War” over the Wall is so ON!

Updated graphic! Now…with NEW DRONE action! Do your 5th graders have any other great ideas? We will add!

Action – Call! Every. damn. day. until the shutdown is over.

The wall is a profoundly stupid, ineffective, wasteful, environmentally disastrous, and immoral idea. Make sure your legislators know!

Fri – 1/18: Risky business – antibiotics as pesticides on food crops. Comments due tomorrow (Sat. 1/19)!

Action: Stop our race to a dangerous past. Write a comment here to stop the use of antibiotics as pesticides.

Citrus growers, from backyards to huge orchards, are fighting citrus greening disease, aka “yellow dragon disease“. The disease, which is caused by a pathogen spread by insects, causes discoloration and withering of fruit, making them inedible, and the eventual death of the affected tree. It first reached Florida in 2005 and it now threatens citrus crops across the nation (including Ventura County!), as well as in 33 other countries. There is no known cure yet, but there is one treatment that may be worse for us than the lack of our morning orange juice…treatment with antibiotics that are vital to our health.

The deadline is this  tomorrow – Saturday January 19th by 11:59 EST! Go here to comment.

Here’s the regulation site.  They currently have 33 comments! Seriously. 33. Continue reading “Fri – 1/18: Risky business – antibiotics as pesticides on food crops. Comments due tomorrow (Sat. 1/19)!”

Fri – 1/18: “RESEARCH” means “whale hunt” in Japanese & it’s coming to an ocean near you. Deadline 1/30 – email against Japanese whaling.

Write it as big as you want, guys. It won’t make it true.

Action – Write an email against Japanese whaling.

Greetings Marine Activists:
Whales, majestic creatures of great beauty but the strength of their beauty cannot prevent a massive torpedo from ripping apart their huge bodies.
And the killing of whales will start soon as Japan has officially withdrawn from the International Whaling Commission and will start to kill whales in a few months. Several other nations (Russia, Norway, Australia) have also announced that they intend to begin whaling.
Worldwide public pressure is important if we are to stop the slaughter by Japanese whalers.
The state of California will consider drafting a letter at a meeting of the CA Fish and Game Commission on February 6 2019. We would like this letter to be sent to the Japanese Prime Minster and other Japanese government leaders.
We would like the letter to strongly voice California’s objection to Japanese whaling.
Please send a email to the commission before January 30, 2019 asking the commission to send a strong letter of opposition to whaling by the Government of Japan.
Emails go to the commission at this address: fgc@fgc.ca.gov
Please reference commission agenda item # 29.

Thurs- 1/17: Reminder: Today’s the hearing for public comment on 750 new oil wells next door.

Action #1 -Submit a comment at a public hearing on Jan. 17th.

Three companies are proposing to drill over 750 new oil wells in the northern part of Santa Barbara County. The draft Enviromental Impact Report (EIR) for one of these companies – Aera – was released in December and is now open for public comment. There are two ways we can submit a comment: (Original post with background info. here. – written comments due by Jan. 28th.)

On January 17 at 6PM, there will be a public hearing where anyone can come and submit a comment on the draft EIR. Note – all comments must be made to be referring to the draft EIR itself. Here are some links to help.

Thurs – 1/17: HELP!!! The Homeless Count needs more volunteers! Training classes start today.

Please help with a “Day of Service” in your own community?

The yearly Homeless Count is happening again on Tuesday, Jan. 22nd at sites all throughout Ventura County including: Ventura, Camarillo, Ojai, Santa Paula, Thousand Oaks, Fillmore, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Port Hueneme, Moorpark, and unincorporated Areas.

An accurate count is crucial for our county to receive all the HUD support we need. These rainy days just illustrate how important it is to get as many people housed as possible.

THEY NEED MORE PEOPLE TO HELP!!!

Consider this: Since Trump was elected, a lot of us have done things that we’d never imagined doing, especially the introverts amongst us. Continue reading “Thurs – 1/17: HELP!!! The Homeless Count needs more volunteers! Training classes start today.”

Wed – 1/16: Trump’s relentless and corrupt extraction of OUR resources continues despite the shutdown.

Action – Call your legislators and the House Natural Resource Committee to shut this down.

Last Thursday, we published a shout-out from Jim Hines of the Los Padres Sierra Club describing calls he’d had with Dept. of Interior (DOI) staff that the shutdown was being used to mask mining drilling activity in our national parks, with staff ordered to continue issuing permits. Well, now Trump has ordered more staff back to work on offshore oil and gas projects and he also sneak-signed an executive order to allow logging to continue and expand in our national forests during the shutdown.

Minimum script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Committee [___] to demand that ALL OIL AND GAS-related activities on public land, (including drilling, permit processing, inspections, public meetings and regulatory documents) and ALL TIMBER OPERATIONS on public land be halted until the shutdown is completely lifted. Continue reading “Wed – 1/16: Trump’s relentless and corrupt extraction of OUR resources continues despite the shutdown.”

Tues – 1/15: This Barr is set too low.

Action: Call your senator and tell them “NO” on William Barr for Attorney General.

“This is not the Whitaker replacement you are looking for.”

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator [___] to vote against the nomination of William Barr for Attorney General.

More script for the enraged: We want an attorney that not only understands the Constitution, but understands that it is his or her job to serve and protect it and the American people, not act as a lackey for the President.

Minimum requirements: He completely recuses himself from the investigation AND he pledges to release the full text of the Mueller’s investigation to the public. (There’s nothing in it that could surprise us now…)

Background

The GOP expects that we’d be so grateful for a lawyer, who unlike Whitaker, hasn’t been accused of fraud, abusive anti-gay prosecution or maintaining a proud disbelief and ignorance of Supreme Courts powers, that we’ll take anyone… Continue reading “Tues – 1/15: This Barr is set too low.”

Mon – 1/14: 750 new oil wells in north SB county! Go to the hearing, write a comment, or do BOTH!

Photo: from video on steam injection enhanced oil recovery.

Some may say “This isn’t our county…not our problem.”
That’s not how resistance works.
We are indivisibly linked, not just with our own town or county, but with the issues that threaten our neighbors, our state and our nation. Help make California inhospitable for the toxic oil drilling industry, not just in Cat Canyon, but everywhere.
