Tues 6/19 – Fight with for the kids. Fight for America.

Tuesday’s (3) three actions on immigration: Call out the two terrible immigration bills, one terrible judicial nomination and the terrible guy who’s supposed to watch over refugees.

Hey, the GOP is taking our human rights ball and going home.

The administration says we’re leaving the UN Human Rights Council over “anti-Israel bias“. Apparently we’ve also had concerns over their loose criteria for membership and wanted the ability to kick countries that have egregious human rights records off the council.

Countries just like us, it seems. The expected announcement comes a day after the U.N.’s top human rights official criticized the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy.

So let’s get back to our own home-grown human rights violations!

Hostage-taking 101 – The Dreamers
On September 5 of last year, the Trump administration, seemingly on a whim, revoked the legal status of 800,000 DREAMers that has allowed them to be able to work, go to school, and continue to contribute and live in the communities where they have grown up. Their future has been used as a bargaining chip to destroy immigration as we know it.

Advanced Hostage-taking 201 – Pitting one set of hostages against the other.
In April of this year, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Trump administration would begin intentionally separating parents from their children at our border. Congress failed to pass a bill that protected DREAMers or these kids and now they are facing a vote on Paul Ryan’s terrible bill and Goodlatte’s even more terrible bill this week. Both give bare bones legal status to a small group of DREAMers in exchange for decimating the pathway to legal status and asylum for other immigrant children and families.

Apparently, we need to be the heroes of this chapter of American history.

Action #1: Both bills should get a resounding ‘NOT ON OUR WATCH’!

Goodlatte’s bill, H.R.4760 – “Securing America’s Future Act of 2018” is the un-American mash-up of white supremacists’ dreams.

  • It hurts farmworkers, creating a modern day Bracero program that would undermine the wages and working conditions of all agricultural workers. The bill would expand the scope of the current H-2A program in a way that will harm both US and immigrant workers. (Sign SEIU’s petition here.)
  • It will deport more Dreamers, provide legal status to as little as 10% of DREAMers.
  • keeps children in detention longer
  • It funds a border wall
  • Reduces legal immigration by 40%,
  • Eliminates diversity visas
  • Includes language that no state (Hey, we’re looking at you, CA!) or local government entity can limit a state, or local government official from assisting ICE.
  • Even the right wing hates this bill as it is estimated to cost our economy $319 BILLION!
  • Makes it twice as difficult for Black and Latinx immigrants to gain legal status.
  • Provides additional resources to the very immigration agencies that are separating kids from their parents and that have been found by the ACLU to be committing human rights abuses in the name of immigration enforcement!

Ryan’s still unnumbered bill, (working title -‘‘Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2018’’) is being sold as the “compromise” to Goodlatte’s obvious racist craziness. However, it’s comprised of 300 pages of the mean-spirited drivel that Ryan is known for and has these completely unsurprising features:

  • It Does NOT Not End Family Separations!
  • It Keeps Children in Detention For Longer Periods of Time. If passed the bill will allow for children to be kept in government detention centers for longer periods of time in jail-like hardened conditions without basic standards for their care or well-being.
  • Makes it Easier to Send Away More Children More Quickly. This Republican bill eliminates protections for young immigrant children and would allow DHS to quickly deport children without fully considering their asylum claims.
  • Shrinks the Number of Asylum Seekers By Making it More Difficult to Apply. It would change the law to facilitate the swift removal of asylum seekers and make it harder to apply for asylum.
  • Eliminates Special Protections for Children. The bill would terminate special protections for children in jail including suitable living conditions, routine medical care and emergency health services, and recreation time and counseling services necessary for the well-being and healthy development of any child. The bill would also prohibit any government funding for counsel for children — leaving many small children without a voice in the courtroom.
  • And it wastes our money on a wall too.

Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] to tell Rep. [__] that they have my full support to vote ‘NO’ on both Ryan’s or Goodlatte’s embarrassing and un-American immigration bills.

Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779
or Rep. Salud Carbajal: (CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348

Action #2: Once he corrupts the Judiciary, Trump won’t be asking for permission…Vote “No” on “Chad” for the 9th circuit!

chadWhile we’re busy fighting for the kids with phone calls, protests and rallies, Donald Trump has nominated Chad Readler, the Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Department of Justice Civil Division, a key defender of the family separation policy for a lifetime judgeship.

Chad-ReadlerChad’s creepy frat-boy vibe comes with equipped with a long history of advocating for harmful, discriminatory policies. Besides the separation policy, since joining the DOJ, Chad has enthusiastically worked to advance the transgender military ban, the termination of DACA, the Muslim travel ban, and the baseless assertion that the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional. A close colleague and defender of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, he has a hostile record toward health care, America’s public schools, voting rights for communities of color, LGBTQ rights, workers’ rights, immigrants, and women’s and reproductive rights. Here’s a more in-depth look at his destructive romp through American values.

Readler’s extreme positions, many of which contravene federal legal precedent, have prompted Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) to refuse to support Readler’s nomination, which should be enough. But blue-slip turncoat Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA), has announced he no longer cares about his former well-documented values and is allowing unqualified, dangerously extremist nominees like Readler to come to a vote. What a great legacy, Senator Grassley!

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Senator [__] to vote “NO” on Chad Readler if he makes it to a vote.

Also, if you have minute, add calls against these guys too.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430
and Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884

Action #3: Rinse and repeat on “NO” for Ronald Mortensen- hate group member and fox looking for a henhouse.

The Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration’s purpose is to aid refugees and victims of conflict escaping persecution. So the Trump administration has scraped up the most extreme anti-immigrant they could find – Ronald Mortensen, a fellow with the anti-immigrant/white supremacist hate group Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), to serve as that bureau’s Assistant Secretary of State. Mortensen has been affiliated with CIS since 2009 and even founded another anti-immigrant group in his home state of Utah. Unsurprisingly, Mortensen has repeatedly espoused the lie that immigrants are criminals, even referring to immigrant populations in sanctuary cities as “illegal alien murderers, identity thieves, gang bangers, and other assorted thugs.”

Prominent immigration lawyer Greg Siskind said that this nomination shows that Trump was “getting bolder” in furthering his anti-immigration agenda, writing on Twitter that the “president has put a lot of extreme anti-immigrants in key positions, but has been careful not to put them in jobs requiring Senate confirmation.”  Until now.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [___] to tell Senator [___] to reject Ronald Mortensen’s nomination for Director of the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. Mortensen is an anti-immigrant bigot whose racist views make him utterly unfit to oversee refugee settlement in the US.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430
and Senator Harris: DC (202) 224-3553, LA (213) 894-5000, SAC (916) 448-2787, Fresno (559) 497-5109, SF (415) 355-9041, SD (619) 239-3884
