Senate vote
Action #1 – “YES” on AB 893 – Stop gun shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds
AB 893 – “22nd District Agricultural Association: firearm and ammunition sales at the Del Mar Fairgrounds” would, on and after January 1, 2021, prohibit the sale of firearms and ammunition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds property located in the 22nd District Agricultural Association, as specified, and would thereby make a violation of that prohibition a misdemeanor. The bill would exclude from its provisions a gun buyback event held by a law enforcement agency. (Assemblymember Gloria)
Action #2 – “YES” on AB 201 – “YES” on requiring funder information on all political text messages
Vote YES on AB 201, the Text DISCLOSE Act which requires text message ads to disclose who paid for them. (Cervantes-Mullin)
Minimal script for your State Senator: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Senator [___] to vote “YES” on both AB 893 and AB 201. It’s time for stop our public property to be used for gun shows and it’s also time that funding for all political messages, from whatever media, is no longer a secret from voters.

Assembly vote
Action #3 – “YES” on SB 47 – “YES” on requiring funder information on all initiative petitions.
SB 47 – “Initiative, referendum, and recall petitions: disclosures.”This petition DISCLOSE Act requires initiative petition circulators to show voters who’s paying for the signature gathering. So many bills have deliberately deceptive titles. The act give potential signers another tool to understand the true motivation behind a proposed proposition. (Senator Allen)
Minimal script for your Assembly Member: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Assembly Member [___] to vote “YES” on SB-47. With so many bills with deceptive titles, we need transparency on the funding behind ALL the political actions we are presented with.

The Governor’s office
Action #4 – Governor Newsom – Just sign SB 276 already and stop putting the kids who REALLY can’t be immunized at risk.
Please call Governor Newsom and urge him to get on with signing SB 276 – “Immunizations: medical exemptions” and stop weakening it with amendments. He’s already forced the bill author, Senator (and pediatrician) Richard Pan to reduce the bill’s oversight efforts to doctors who write five or more exemptions and schools with lower than 95% immunization rates. Now he wants to water it down more, pandering to anti-science crowd hysteria, over the concerns of parents whose children cannot be protected by immunizations due to age or medical issues.
A measles outbreak was just reported last month in Orange County. Our current strict vaccination laws have spared us from the larger outbreaks that are happening in places like New York. But our non-compliance rate is going up, due to parents shopping for unethical doctors willing to give fake medical exemptions. Senator/Dr. Pan’s bill would stop that fraud. Measles, for example, is NOT a benign disease.
- About 1 child out of every 1,000 who get measles will develop encephalitis (swelling of the brain) that can lead to convulsions and can leave the child deaf or with intellectual disability.
- As many as 1 out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young children.
- Nearly 1 to 3 of every 1,000 children who become infected with measles will die from respiratory and neurologic complications.
Sen. Pan has recently been physically attacked for trying to advance public health and protect the most vulnerable amongst us. Our governor need to be just as brave. (Our earlier post on this vaccine act here, including a list of supporters, including the March of Dimes.)
Minimal script for Governor Newson: Please pass SB 276 without watering it down further. This bill has nothing to do with getting in the middle of doctor/patient relationships. This bill cracks down on rogue doctors who make our state less safe for kids who can’t be vaccinated. Parents of vulnerable children will remember what you do now.
