Enviro-pocalypse Now! Fight back against corporations ruining our environment!

OK, don’t freak out at this action list!

We personally tested this list for time. If you’ve “optimized” your phone for fast dialing, you can do this whole thing in under 10 minutes!

However, you may need a cup of coffee for this part…

One thing you’ll notice as you read through these actions, is that almost every one of them is a “taking” from us, the American public. Rich people and corporations, both foreign and domestic, are taking our public land, our forests and our mountain tops, our clean water and air, the right for numerous species to exist and the livelihoods of those in our thriving “outdoor recreation” industry that depends on unspoiled land to draw visitors.

Those involved in this theft will respond that they pay us for these things, but they’ve actually been cheating us for a long time. Oil, gas, mining and timber interests will pay far less taking resources from public land than they would on the open market and they leave behind uncompensated environmental destruction when they’re done. EPA administrator Scott Pruitt has just billed us $25,000 so he can conduct more deals like this in private. Certainly, he doesn’t need his shiny new cone of silence for the 1% of his meetings that are with environmental groups…

The corporations will also argue that they create jobs and tax revenues. Let’s look at one state as for a reality-check. Oil and gas in Utah produces only $2.4 billion of it per year, and that industry employs fewer than 7,000 people in the state. Conversely, “Outdoor recreation contributes more than $12 billion to the economy, employs more than 122,000 people, and is the primary driver behind the tourism industry. Not only does Utah outdoor recreation create $856 million in state and local tax revenues, it is the reason for $3.6 billion in wages and salaries.”

Please keep all this in mind as you make 10 minutes worth of calls this morning. Repeat as necessary.

Action #1 – H.R. 3990 – A Death Blow to our National Parks and Monuments.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Rep. [___] to vote NO on H.R. 3990 – “National Monument Creation and Protection Act”.

More script if you want it: This deceptively-named bill will effectively destroy our national monument system. It redefines what can be protected, limits the size of monuments, allows the President to rescind a National Monument, and prohibits the creation of marine monuments.

Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

or Rep. Salud Carbajal: (CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348

Action #2 – “…there is no safe level of coal-fired power plant pollution that is healthy to breathe.” Write! Deadline Oct. 23!

Energy Secretary Rick Perry gave the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) just 60 days to consider a radical proposal giving preferential treatment to coal power instead of non-polluting alternatives— despite higher costs for consumers and serious consequences for our health and climate.

Write! Deadline is Oct. 23rd! There are 3 days left to submit a public comment against this.

You can do it here  https://nextgenamerica.org/act/reject-dirty-power-plan/ or directly to the government site here.

Action #3 – Repeal the repeal of the Clean Power Act. Call Scotty!

Minimal Script to Scotty: I’m calling from [zip code] to express my serious opposition to the EPA’s decision to repeal the Clean Power Plan. It is clear that carbon emissions have led to climate change, health issues and the increase of natural disasters devastating our country. Undoing policies that would help to reduce them is gravely irresponsible.
More script if you want it: You clearly have ignored the $34B in projected health benefits accrued from clean power sources. You’ve also artificially inflated the plan’s costs by up to $25B, while undervaluing the true cost of carbon by nearly $20B and ignoring the trending lower costs from clean energy sources.

Action #4 – Doubling down on clean energy with H.R. 3671

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Rep. [___] to vote YES on H.R. 3671 – “Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act”.

More script if you want itThe OFF Act would put the US on a pathway to replace fossil fuels with 100% clean energy generation and use by 2035. Climate change is the greatest threat to civilization that we face. The OFF Act will move us decisively towards reducing our carbon footprint, while creating jobs and stimulating our economy.

Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

or Rep. Salud Carbajal: (CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348

Action #5 – One call to stop these bills that threaten to weaken or destroy our Endangered Species Act

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Rep. [___] to vote NO on H.R. 424, H.R. 717, H.R. 1274, H.R. 2603, and H.R. 3131 that weaken protections of the Endangered Species Act or to exempt individual species from protection.

More script if you need it: Destroying our parks with HR 3990? More coal production with Rick Perry? Destroying our Endangered Species act? WTH is going on in Washington?

Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

or Rep. Salud Carbajal: (CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348

(Note – All the titles are either OPPOSITE of what they actually are or are confusingly bland. Confirm that the intern on the phone knows that you’re saying NO on all of them.)
H.R. 424“Gray Wolf State Management Act of 2017”Wrong! this is really the GOP’s war on grey wolves.
H.R. 717 – “Listing Reform Act”This bill requires a review of the economic costs of adding a species to the endangered or threatened species list before doing so under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.
H.R.1274 – “State, Tribal, and Local Species Transparency and Recovery Act”. This bill would automatically deem any information submitted by a state or local government to be the “best available” science even if such information were contradictory, out-of-date or fraudulent, weakening the listing process for endangered species. Remember “Transparency” in GOP-speak means they’re hiding something from us.
H.R. 2603 – They call it the SAVES” Act, which means, of course, a lot of animals will die.  This bill amends the Endangered Species Act of 1973 so that nonnative species in the US will no longer be treated as endangered species or threatened species for purposes of that Act. It loosens the rules for interstate commerce of ivory and undermines the United States’ leadership in protecting wildlife. (See picture of stacks of tusks above!)
H.R. 3131 – “Endangered Species Litigation Reasonableness Act“. Hahahaha! This bill hampers citizen the ability of citizens to bring lawsuits, making the agency more prone to consider politics over the welfare of threatened species.

Action #6 – Stop these deceptive and corruption-forward bills that endanger our forests and bird populations – URGENT!

Minimal Script To Rep.: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Rep. [___] to vote NO on H.R. 2936 – “Resilient Federal Forests Act of 2017“.

More script if you want it: The rule of OPPOSITE titles holds here. This bill does a lot of bad things, including endangering old growth forests, handing over public land easements over to private owners, requiring the BLM to offer at least 500 million board feet of lumber from CA and OR, far above it’s maximum sustainable yield, forgoing Endangered Species Act consultation and allowing logging, grazing and herbicide application to avoid environmental analysis for areas less than 10,000 acres. Of course, nothing prevents these projects from being laid one next to another, like postage stamps on an overweight letter. The result could be huge swaths of sensitive forest being clear-cut without anyone having any idea how much that will increase erosion and flooding or degrade water quality, to say nothing of its effect on vulnerable animals living there. This is a big ol’ polluting land and resouces grab by private owners and industry.

Rep. Julia Brownley: (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

Minimal Script To Sen.: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to vote NO on S. 1731– “Forest Management Improvement Act of 2017“, which (of course) endangers old growth forests and animal habitats.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

Action #7 – Vote against this current crop of Kakistocrats

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to vote NO on the latest unqualified nominees for important positions involving environmental policy, including Kathleen Hartnett-White, Andrew Wheeler, William Wehrum, Michael Dourson and Barry Myers. These nominees cannot be trusted to protect public health and the environment. Additionally they will not commit to uphold California’s Green House Gas Waiver.

Senator Feinstein: DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

More Info:
Kathleen Hartnett-White

Kathleen Hartnett-White

Possibly the most dangerous one in the bunch, as she appears to be a true believer of bad science. Probably because she is not an actual scientist. She received her BA & MA in Humanities and Religion, participated in a doctoral program in religion and spent a year in law school. “She will more aggressively go after dismantling all environmental laws — that’s the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, that’s the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act,” said Christy Goldfuss, who led CEQ in the Obama administration. “It’s creative evil, is what someone told me today.”

Of particular concern to environmentalists is Hartnett White’s assertion that climate change is not a danger to society and that recent hurricanes, raging wildfires and droughts are not a sign of increasingly severe weather, as well as her advocacy around the use of fossil fuels in her published “Fossil Fuels: The Moral Case”. In it, Mrs. White argued that labeling carbon dioxide emissions as a pollutant is “absurd” and asserted that it should be considered the “gas of life.”

Mrs. White also has called renewable energy “unreliable and parasitic,” described global warming as “a creed, a faith, a dogma that has little to do with science,” and asserted that science does not dictate policy in democracies. In it, Mrs. White argued that labeling carbon dioxide emissions as a pollutant is “absurd” and asserted that it should be considered the “gas of life.”

Andrew Wheeler

WheelerTrump.png
Trump recently nominated coal industry lobbyist Andrew Wheeler to fill the number two spot at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as “deputy administrator”, doubling down on his anti-climate agenda and his dangerous campaign promise to prop up the failing dirty coal industry. Vote coming soon!

For nearly a decade, Wheeler lobbied for the coal industry and other polluters, and since 2009, he has been a registered lobbyist for Murray Energy, the largest coal mining conglomerate in the country. Murray Energy’s CEO, Robert Murray, who famously tried to sue HBO’s John Oliver over an accurate exposé about the coal industry, is an outspoken climate change denier who regularly peddles in blatant lies, believes the Earth is cooling and recently falsely claimed 4,000 scientists told him that “mankind is not affecting climate change.” He also wasted taxpayer dollars by helping Murray Energy regularly sue the EPA to prevent stricter regulations on ozone and carbon emissions and other pollutants, including leading a lawsuit with a number of Republican-led states against the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan, of which Trump and EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt recently moved to reverse.

William Wehrum

This petrochemical lawyer and climate denier has been nominated to be head of the Office of Air and Radiation. Watch this great video as Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley tries to figure out if this guy will admit to any facts about the environment. “As Merkley suggests, Wehrum is in all likelihood not as stupid as his testimony would lead you to believe. “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it,” Upton Sinclair famously wrote. Wehrum has represented a number of fossil fuel industry interests, from the American Petroleum Institute, Kinder Morgan, the American Forest & Paper Association, and electric utilities in suing the EPA in fighting a number of regulations, some of which his new job would give him the authority to dismantle.”

CA Senator Harris also nails him on the California waiver issue.

Michael Dourson

This chemical lobby scientist was tapped to be head of Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. However, he’s so bad that voting on him has been postponed until futher notice.

Barry Myers

barry myers

Accuweather CEO Barry Myers has actively lobbied to privatize the agency he has been nominated to head; NOAA , National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which includes the National Weather Service. He also who breaks from the recent precedent of scientists leading the agency tasked with a large, complex and technically demanding portfolio.
