Tell Biden and your legislators that we want our post office back.

Quote by Michael Hiltzik, LA Times

  • Action #1: Senators – Replace Ron Bloom and John Barger on the Board of Governors immediately.
  • Action #2. Representatives – Congress must enable postal leadership to build the USPS of the future.
  • Action #3. Talk to Joe.

The United States Postal Service shall be operated as a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by the Government of the United States, authorized by the Constitution, created by Act of Congress, and supported by the people.  39 U.S. Code § 101(a)

Things are heating up under the USPS pot.

  • Seven representatives have submitted H.Con.Res.54 – “Objecting to the slowdown in mail delivery and postage rate increase instituted by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and seeking to halt both actions pending further investigation.
  • 77 public interest groups sent a letter to President Biden demanding that he NOT reappoint Chair of the USPS Board of Governors Ron Bloom, documenting how his backing of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy implicated him in DeJoy’s failure of leadership, poor performance, and conflicts of interest of both men. (Letter with list of signers here)
  • Soon after Postmaster Louis DeJoy began sabotaging the post office, over 300 organizations, including groups like Public Citizen, ACLU, NAACP, Indivisible, MoveOn, Color of Change, the American Postal Workers Union, National Farmers Union, VoteVets, and RuralOrganizing.org – put together a list that will be our marching orders today.

“The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people.” 39 U.S. Code § 101(a)

Action #1: Senators – Replace Ron Bloom and John Barger on the Board of Governors immediately.

Wed 8/19: The GOP’s plans are in place to uber-ize our Postal Service. DeJoy is the end-game. It’s up to us to save it.

(Updated 9/2/2020)
Today’s post is not an action. It’s an explanation of how the GOP thought they could openly sabotage our USPS and an election. This is not the beginning of their campaign. This is the next-to-last-step before the GOP and their handlers privatize our postal service, promising a dystopian future for our postal workers and all who depend on them. We have two other related posts:

  • Up-to-date on the DeJoy investigation here.
  • Actions? go here. We have a bunch of them….like those that set a fire under DeJoy’s expensively-upholstered behind, and made our famously anti-USPS president bleat tweet “SAVE THE POST OFFICE” (seriously?) –

We are in an abusive relationship with the GOP.

Wed 9/2: This is what you can do to help save the USPS and our election.

This is the 9/2/2020 version. Read our update on the legislative war against DeJoy here and about the  GOP’s campaign to privatize our Postal Service here. (Quote by Michael Hiltzik, LA Times)

9/2: Update: Add in USPS Board of Governors Chairman Robert Duncan, revealed on Monday to be the director of Senator Mitch McConnell’s super PAC. McConnell, in a re-election campaign of his own, has been careful to sidestep criticizing the USPS directly, a service popular with over 90% of Americans, preferring to say “it will be just fine” and leaving town without giving it any funding.
Aug 21 update: Former member of USPS testifies that Sec. Treasurer Mnuchin inserted himself into this non-partisan role to politicize the office in favor of Trump.

Action #1: CALL! Subpoena them all!

Three men have been largely responsible for turning a non-partisan American institution loved by over 90% of the public into a partisan swamp. We support  Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y. plans to subpoena Postmaster General DeJoy.  But we want all the fish –  including USPS Board of Governor Chairman and GOP operative Robert Duncan for his role in placing DeJoy in his position, and his political conflicts from serving on boards supporting both Mitch McConnell and Trump’s reelection bid and Treasury Sec. Mnuchin. He can bring his little “fact sheet” with him to the hearing.

Minimal script to ALL Reps/Senators: “I’m calling from [zip code] to support Rep. Maloney’s plan to subpoena Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. I also want Robert Duncan from the USPS board and Sec. Mnuchin supoenaed to answer for their roles in politicizing our postal service.

Action #2: CALL! – Democrat or GOP. Make sure your legislators know you’re watching. Both DeJoy and Robert Duncan must resign!

envelope.jpegMinimal script to ALL Reps/Senators: “I’m calling from [zip code] to demand that Sen./Rep. [___]  call for the immediate resignation of Postmaster General DeJoy, due to his deliberate sabotage or incompetence, his political and financial conflicts of interest, and his clear disinterest in ensuring that all American can safely vote by mail this fall.

In addition – Robert Duncan, the chairman of the USPS Board of Governors, is not only directly responsible for installing DeJoy, but has also been revealed to be a director of Mitch McConnell’s $130M super PAC. McConnell has refused to take up the bill for USPS funding.

Between DeJoy, Duncan and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin’s interference described in the Congress’ hearings, the Postal Service, an essential nonpartisan service, has been turned into a tool for partisan gain.

I expect Sen./Rep. [___] to demand that the USPS Board of Governors either fires Louis DeJoy and Robert Duncan, or hand in their own resignations. Continue reading “Wed 9/2: This is what you can do to help save the USPS and our election.”

Thurs 4/16: Shock Therapy: The GOP has tried to kill our Postal Service for decades. Trump and the pandemic may finish it off. Call your legislators!

Action #1: Call your legislators to say to “Fund the Post Office NOW.”

Question: If the GOP and Trump want to run the Postal Service like a business, why don’t they treat it like any other business?

760504-T0

The Postal Service is suffering, just like other businesses during this pandemic. It’s had “a $13 billion revenue loss due directly to COVID-19 this fiscal year and a $54.3 billion additional losses over ten years.” Its employees are on the front lines, providing essential services to the rest of us and now 693 of their 630,000 workers have tested positive for COVID-19, more than 6000 are in self-quarantine and several have died. So why won’t the GOP and Trump step up to help them? After all…

  • They’re handing $500 billion to other money-losing businesses, including those who’ve abused stock buybacks, those that pay no taxes, and those that have even killed people, like Boeing.
  • They don’t force the Pentagon, FBI, CIA, CDC, FDA, FEMA or other agencies to make a profit.
  • They don’t force corporations, even government-backed ones like Boeing or Raytheon, to pre-fund their health-care for 75 years! That’s insane.
  • They don’t force other businesses to keep doing unprofitable things, like delivering any letter in the US for a flat rate of 55 cents or stop them from adding services their patrons need. (like banking!)
  • They’re handing $170 billion tax cut to millionaires and billionaires on the off-chance it might trickle down to a business, and not to an offshore bank.

Answer: Because they both want to kill it. Continue reading “Thurs 4/16: Shock Therapy: The GOP has tried to kill our Postal Service for decades. Trump and the pandemic may finish it off. Call your legislators!”
