There are no small elected offices.

Public school boards are a dark-funding target of the Kochs’ hyper-conservative “Americans for Prosperity (AFP)” campaign, focusing on destroying and privatizing our education system. (The Kochs (one has died) were also behind the Citizen’s United case.) One of AFP’s most infamous moves was to push four conservative candidates onto the school board of Wake County, NC in 2011, with the unstated intent to segregate the school district.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers union and a fierce critic of the Kochs and (Betsy) DeVos, said the Koch-funded push is about destabilizing public schools. She said she thinks austerity efforts to drastically cut school spending in states like Kansas backfired, so the Kochs are emphasizing private school choice instead. They and Betsy DeVos are twins,” Weingarten said. “They are about destroying public education and destroying the foundations of opportunity for working folk.‘”

For that to happen, they need to quietly take over school boards. Keep an eye out for candidates who deny climate change, or have issues against particular books, sex-education courses, and LGBTQ kids. Don’t vote for those with porous borders on the separation of church and state. Ask what they think about ethnic studies, and teaching more accurate US history, like the NY Times 1619 Project, vs. Trump or Koch-backed nonsense. Be very careful for whom you vote. Kids are depending on you.
