Stop the Minister of Hate’s sneaky campaign to suppress voting before Oct 20th, 8:59 pm!

WHY IS VOLDEMORT DOING THIS? This video of Paul Weyrich, now-dead founder of the Heritage Foundation, lays out the whole plot in 40 seconds.

His foundation, along with their Project 2025 gang and the GOP want only White wealthy landowners to vote, just like back at the signing of the Constitution. They’ve been working hard for decades to destroy all the pesky constitutional amendments and laws that opened up their private club to us groundlings and they feel this is their time to strike.

SO WHAT IS THIS “CAMPAIGN”? The America First Legal Foundation (AFLF – we pronounce it “Alfalfa.”) just sent an extremely deceptive petition to the Election Assistance Commission (EAC). Alfalfa is an anti-civil rights organization started by – SURPRISE! – Stephen “Voldemort” Miller! Its goals are to be the anti-ACLU, hunting down and killing civil rights – for women, for the LGBTQ community, minorities, and just about any other cause they deem “woke.” They have a spot prioritized in their cold, dead hearts for suppressing voting, and in a classic 2-for-one, they are recycling their well-established fear tactics against immigrants, despite the minuscule number who accidentally vote, to move voting beyond the reach of millions of American citizens.

They are requesting the addition of a requirement that people registering to vote must show one of these proofs of citizenship:

  • US Passport.
  • State-issued Real ID-compliant driver’s license indicating that the applicant is a citizen.
  • An official military identification card that indicates the applicant is a US citizen.
  • Valid Federal or State government-issued photo identification if such identification indicates that the applicant is a US citizen or if such identification is otherwise accompanied by proof of US citizenship.

WHY ARE THEY USING THIS WEIRD REGULATORY PROCESS FOR THIS?: It’s a sneaky workaround to save the worst bits of the marooned SAVE Act. Although this nasty piece of work passed the House, the stank of Christian Nationalism is impeding its progress through the Senate. Alfalfa was really, really hoping no one on our side noticed this petition until it’s too late. The League of Women Voters, did, however, and they’ve mentioned that Alfalfa’s request is illegal.

SO, WHY IS VOTER ID A BIG DEAL? Immediate consequences – an estimated 21 million Americans could be shut out from the ballot box, particularly rural voters, students, women, communities of color, and members of the military. Knock-on issues:

  • It’s based on a lie. The Heritage Foundation’s own tally of actual fraud proves that.
  • We have actual examples – Kansas ended up blocking 31,000 citizens (12% of their first time voters) over false rumors of undocumented voting. They got sued. They lost.
  • Registering to vote, or updating your information will become a time-consuming in-person chore that might be feasibly impossible in areas without public transportation.
  • Also expensive.
  • Groups like the League of Women Voters will no longer be able to do voter drives, or sign up high school and college students to become our next wave of voters.
  • It targets non-white and non-male people.
  • Everyone will have to appear in person to their elections offices or DMV’s to register or make changes, discouraging many, especially if when the GOP targets offices in areas in minority neighborhoods without public transportation. Yeah, they do that now!
  • Large-scale voter attrition will occur, slowly at first, then accelerate, as people lose the habit of voting due to discouraging and expensive obstacles.
  • Once voter abuse starts, people who thought they were immune will get caught up in it. The SAVE Act could take voting away from 69 million married American women whose names do not match their birth certificate.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO? Trump’s base has already sent in over 15 thousand comments, mostly just one or two ranty sentences. We need to get in there and tell our own stories.

HOW DO I DO THIS?
Comments must be submitted by October 20 at 8:59 PT.

  • Go to the petition page on regulations.gov by clicking here.
  • Submit the comment as an individual or anonymously. You choose!
  • We’ve attached sample comments from the League of Women Voters below.
    • DO NOT COPY IT THEM EXACTLY – COPIES ARE REMOVED!
  • Make it personal if you can. We’ve all voted. Tell them what losing this right would mean to you and others.
  • IT CAN BE A SINGLE SENTENCE! Many of the oppositions comments are very short. (Cruise through them here.)

SAMPLE COMMENTS – Use as inspiration. DON’T JUST COPY THE LIST! Pick pieces that most resonate with you and use your own knowledge to create a comment that sounds like your voice.

  • Voting is important to me because ________________________.
  • I’m a member of a community group that does voter registration and __________________.
  • I’m worried that high school and college students won’t get registered if ________________ no longer comes to their classes.
  • I have a ________________________ who would have trouble being allowed to continue voting under this potential rule.
  • The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) does not allow the EAC to add a DPOC (documentary proof of citizenship) requirement and the EAC is subject to the strict standards of the NVRA in assessing this petition.
  • I’m against requiring citizens to submit a passport, birth certificate, or other citizenship documents to register to vote! Only half of American citizens have a passport, and 69 million American citizens don’t have a birth certificate with their current legal name on it.
  • It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections.
  • Requiring a document to prove American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections is unnecessary. State election officials have systems to verify an individual voter’s eligibility and ensure voter rolls are accurate.
  • There are many communities of eligible voters who would be unnecessarily burdened by the requirement of documentary proof of citizenship. Among them are military voters, families who have been impacted by natural disasters may have lost necessary documentation, and Americans who have changed their name, like married women.
  • You should not require Americans to show costly documents before registering to vote.
  • There is no widespread non-citizen voting in federal elections, so this move would only make it more difficult for eligible voters to cast their ballots.
  • Please reject this petition and protect voting rights for all eligible Americans.
  • Millions of American citizens could be blocked from voting under this policy nationwide.
  • More than 21 million American citizens don’t have documents like a passport or birth certificate readily available. Only about half of American adults have a passport.
  • Some Americans are far more likely to be blocked from voting than others.
  • Married women and other voters who change their names, voters of color, and younger voters are especially likely to be disenfranchised.
  • We’ve seen this failed policy restrict the freedom to vote before.
  • When Kansas tried to implement its own proof-of-citizenship requirement for voting, it blocked tens of thousands of eligible Americans from registering to vote. Kansas’ Republican secretary of state pointed out that the effort “didn’t work out so well”.
  • There are checks in place to ensure that only eligible U.S. citizens vote.
  • Exceptions are vanishingly rare. When states investigate — like Louisiana did recently — they’ve repeatedly confirmed that fact.
