Action #1 – Come support a ban on gun shows at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. DAA Board Meeting – TUESDAY, May 28th at 9 am.
“In these times of horrific gun violence, no state agency should be promoting and profiting from the proliferation of firearms and ammunition in our community,”- Ruth Borenstein, a leader of the San Francisco chapter of Brady United Against Gun Violence.
PLEASE COME! Tuesday, May 28th, the Ventura County Fair Board plans to vote on a proposal from Crossroads Of The West for three more gun shows at the fairgrounds this year: in August, October & December (the weekend before Christmas). We have been arguing for months that the Fair Board should follow the example of the Cow Palace. in San Francisco and the Del Mar fairgrounds — both publicly owned facilities like our own — and stop hosting gun shows on taxpayer-supported property. WE MUST show up and forcefully make the argument against continuing to hold gun shows at the fairgrounds.
If you feel strongly about this issue, please make the effort to attend this meeting and speak up! (Derby Club. 10 W Harbor Blvd, Ventura – 9 am – Wear Orange. ). If you’re unable to do so, you may send an email to the board (preferably by tomorrow) via its CEO, Barbara Quaid, at bquaid@venturacountyfair.org.
Though people are allowed to own, buy and sell guns according to the laws of their states, there’s no implicit right to having gun shows on public property. For the newly permitted cannabis shows, for example, DAA Board members are instructed to have open, public meetings to determine a community’s values and standards towards such events. Orange County Fair Board members voted to ban them from their Costa Mesa fairgrounds, while Sacramento’s Cal Expo Fairgrounds had their first cannabis show over the 4/20 weekend.
Our values are we’d prefer not to have gun shows here anymore.
