Wed – 1/9: Yeah, we matter. Update from Indivisible and one action to thank our Senators.

Take a minute and watch this…

This is what this looked like nearer to home…Indivisible Conejo, Indivisible Ventura, Indivisible Ojai, Democratic clubs and others gathered together with Julia Brownley’s chief of staff, Lenny Young, to remind her what’s important to us and what we expect her to fight for: veterans’ care, universal healthcare, immigration reform, gun violence, and environmental protections, including pollution and climate change.

Action – Thank our Senators for standing up and voting “NO”!

The first act of the First Congress was the Bill of Rights. Now on our 116th version, the first legislative act of the Democratic-controlled House was to pass two funding measures to re-open government and to fund Homeland Security. Their first scheduled bill, H.R.1, aims at protecting our democracy from corruption. The first act of the GOP-controlled Senate was for McConnell to deny votes for the funding bills while pushing ahead for S.1, which gives $38 billion dollars to Israel while violating Americans’ 1st Amendment protections.

However, Senate Democrats, lead by Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), backed Indivisible’s strategy to refuse to proceed with any legislation until Mitch McConnell brings a bill to the floor to reopen the government. They played hardball, and they won — blocking S.1. That is a BIG deal. And it never would have happened without our legislators knowing that we have their back when they do the right thing.

Our senators were 2 of the 43 who stood up to McConnell and voted “NO” on the motion to proceed to S.1. So call them and thank them. We make them stronger.

Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want to thank Sen.[___] for refusing to proceed to any legislation until the government is reopened.
