January 6 – Light a candle, light up the phone lines!

The leadership of Indivisible Ventura did not plan an in-person vigil for January 6 due to COVID. We know that others, due to geography, illness, weather, etc., would also not be able to attend a in-person vigil on Thursday evening – the anniversary of the January 6th insurrection. (Find a nearby in-person or virtual event here: https://www.mobilize.us/democracyvigils/) But there are great alternatives for expressing our support!

  • Light a candle: Small Deeds Done (https://smalldeedsdone.com) highlighted this idea of “putting a lighted candle (or one that works on a battery but looks like a candle) in a window visible to the street on the evenings of Jan. 5 and 6, just as a way of saying metaphorically, “I want to keep light and democracy alive.”” Then, “If you are on social media, take a photo of it and post with the hashtag #lightupdemocracy.”
  • Light up the phones and social media: Many hands make light work, and now we can do it from home. Pick an activity from below, even a type you’ve never tried before (training included), and join in to fight back against the forces of fascism and secession threatening the country we love. Yes, this work is effective!
  • NEW – Oppose the Sedition Caucus! Donate to “IT STARTS TODAY” – Eight Senators and 139 Representatives (all Republicans) voted to overturn the 2020 Presidential election results in Arizona and Pennsylvania. Contribute today to the next opponent of every one of these treasonous legislators here: https://contribute.itstarts.today/anti-sedition
  • We will update as more activities are posted or are filled.

NOTE: If possible, wear a t-shirt, hat, or pin about an issue that matters to you—like the environment or women’s rights or racial injustice or healthcare or science! It really helps. If you don’t have one I have extra t-shirts to put over layers, as well as some pins.

Thursday– 01/06/2021 – ONLINE PHONE BANK– ”End Citizens UnitedJoan’s Democracy Cafe Phone Banks for voting rights with ECU/LAV” (12:00 – 3:00 pm PDT)

Joan's Democracy Cafe Phone Banks for voting rights with ECU/LAV organized by End Citizens United

Join Joan’s Democracy Café as we phone-bank to protect voting rights!

We support two different campaigns, both run by our partner End Citizens United / Let America Vote (ECU/LAV):

  1. Ask Michigan voters to Decline to Sign a diabolical petition that implements voter suppression without a vote of the people, and invite them to a virtual educational event (run by Voters Not Politicians)
  2. Ask Arizona and West Virginia voters to tell their Senators to reform the filibuster to pass the Freedom to Vote Act (FTVA) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA); we can connect the voter to their Senator’s office while we talk to them (called “patch through”). Here’s highlights of these bills:
    • FTVA prevents partisan gerrymandering! If it does not pass, the Republicans could take over the US House for a decade!
    • FTVA exposes who pays for misleading political ads
    • FTVA makes voting simpler and more secure
    • FTVA protects election officials and infrastructure
    • JLVRAA restores the Voting Rights Act preclearance requirement, to prevent states that have discriminated from inventing new forms of voter discrimination

On Thursdays after ECU/LAV had a Lunch & Learn, we will report its highlights and answer questions about it.

We’ll train first-timers before you make calls – no worries! We’ll make sure you feel prepared before you begin, and remain available to answer your questions.

Our goal is to provide a great phone-banking experience for you … supporting our volunteers in becoming motivated and confident callers.

We are always open to your feedback, as we believe in continuous improvement. Your input helps us to design the JDC phone-banking experience to meet the needs of both our phone bankers and the voters we reach out to.

Thursday – 01/06/2021 – ONLINE PHONE BANK – ”Patch Through to Manchin: Freedom To Vote Act Phone Bank & Training” (3:00pm – 5:00pm PT)

Phone Banking Training & Calling into West Virginia

Patch through to Senator Manchin

At this phone bank training, you will be able to patch through residents of WV directly to Senator Manchin’s office using the phone banking system called ThruTalk.

You will need a computer and a telephone (cell or house). Unfortunately, tablets and iPads are incompatible with ThruTalk and will not work effectively. You will also need to download a web browser like Chrome or Firefox. Safari is incompatible with ThruTalk.

With over 400 state bills introduced by extremist lawmakers–including in West Virginia–aiming to put up barriers to vote just this year, we cannot afford to fail to pass this bill.

We need to push harder than ever to make sure the Senate does what it takes to finish the job, without letting Senate procedure get in their way.

This is Senator Manchin’s bill, so it’s critical that he knows how many of his constituents demand these foundational changes, and are feeling the urgency to get the Freedom to Vote Act passed, and to not let anything stand in the way.

Let’s keep raising our voices until we pass the most transformative voting rights and democracy legislation in decades.

  • Keynote video from Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD), manager of the 2nd Trump impeachment and member of the House Select Committee on Jan. 6.
  • Breakout sessions with live training on actions to reduce the normalization and revenue of Fox News.

We might have cracked the nut on texting! We’re calling it BYOP or Bring Your Own Phone.

Instead of raising money to pay for expensive, easy to use texting software, we’re making texting available using slightly awkward, but still pretty easy technology.

If you already know how to text from your computer, you’re way ahead of the game!

You will need to set two things up on your computer before attending our BYOP Boot Camp.

This document gives links to both items: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RQeU1Z9YVpnqI0dLFD7CV2HBEgP–R2-OfGITkfd34g/edit?usp=sharing

  1. You need an ActionID. You may already have one if you phone or text banked with Field Team 6 in the past.
  2. You need texting software that allows you to send text messages directly from your computer, using your cell phone carrier’s plan.

When you have both items ready, please register for Boot Camp!

Step right up Thursdays at 4p PT! We’ll be registering new Democrats in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Texas and CA-22 (formerly CA-21). Let’s get Democrats elected up and down the ballot!

We will train you up and set you loose! If you are tech-challenged, you might want to sit this one out as we work out the kinks.

We’ll also be using Slack to communicate with our texters. If you already have a login to the Field Team 6 Slack Workspace, great! If not, we’ll give you the sign-up link during the text bank Boot Camp.

About Field Team 6

Field Team 6 is a volunteer army on a simple mission: Register Democrats. Save the World. To help win the 2020 election, we registered 30,000 new Democrats – and helped register nearly 3 million total – in 11 key swing states including Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. Our goals for 2021-2022 are to save the Senate and House majorities, to win races for Democrats up and down the ballot, and to do all this by registering women, young people, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, the disability community, veterans, and faith communities.

Defend Democracy Phonebank January 6th - Phone Bank to Register Voters in Orange County, CA organized by Defend Democracy

Last January 6, a faction of elected officials turned their backs on America by inciting armed right-wing militants to attack our Capitol and then tried to block an investigation to cover up their role in this deadly violence.

This January 6, exactly one year later, Americans across race, place, party, and background are uniting to register voters, demand Congress act to preserve voting rights, and hold vigils to say, “Enough! We will do what it takes to defend our democracy!”

Want to make a real difference? Join us for a Zoom phonebank into Orange County, CA, to reach out to Democratic voters in swing districts to make sure we retain the House in 2022. No experience necessary. We will train you on the entire process.
